bolts,washers,screws?

Hey fellow fetters,

I am currently working on a FP & a GMH @ the same time (first time resin build and built a pepakura last year and want to really focus on a proper paint job) and wanted some pointers on which screws I should use on the ranger finder stalk.I am thinking about going with magnets to hold the ear cap in (any pro's and con's to this?) I live in Canada so if anyone could point my in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated seeing as I haven't found any info regarding what screws to use.Anything would help!

Thanks a bunch!

I've seen some of the builds on here where people will take Chicago screws and imbed them into the ear cap then drill a hole in the helmet and screw it on. I have also seen people use magnets as you're considering. Personally I would rather use screws or bolts as I'd rather not have a part come off of my helmet at an inconvenient time. I don't think it would really be a problem if you used strong enough magnets but I tend to worry about that stuff lol.

Hey Drax! Thanks for the imput, I am similar and I think I just might do the screws for the earcaps just so they dont come off! :) I will be heading over to the local hardware store to see if they carry any Chicago style screws! Just waiting on my visors to come in.

Magnets work pretty well to hold the ear cap on. I've done a couple of helmets using that method.
You can buy pretty small rare earth or ceramic magnets and drill shallow holes in the inner and outer ear caps that match the diameter of the magnets.
Then you can press the magnets into the holes using a dab of epoxy, or if you drill the holes just right, you can just press them in place without even
needing any adhesive.

The most important part of this process is making sure the holes you drill in the inner and outer ear parts match EXACTLY. Otherwise the outer ear
cap will wind up out of position.

Superjedi, I love the idea of the magnets and think I will try them in one of them,or maybe another...I am pretty obsessed with the idea of making these helmets because they are amazing! So I plan on trying different things :)

I'm sure that if you got strong enough magnets the ear cap wouldnt go anywhere. Especially if you used them in two locations. Superjedi what made you want to use magnets? I just cant think of a reason that I would need to remove my ear cap once i have electronics and the stalk installed.

Unless you use steel washers instead of magnets on one side. Maybe with alignment pins? Doing this now on my helmet.

Well I never permanently attach the outer ear cap on my builds. It's either machine screws and nuts, or magnets. I like to do it that way
because if I'm packing/transporting the helmet, it's much more compact if I can easily remove the RF assembly. With magnets, it's very
simple to just pop the ear cap off, remove the stalk pivot bolt, and store the stalk inside the helmet. With machine screws, it's the same
principle, it just takes a few more minutes.

When using the machine screw arrangement, it's also necessary to drill holes through the upper ear platform, then drill corresponding
(shallow) holes in the back of the ear cap.

I am at this phase on my bucket. Trying to determine the best method of attachment as well as a good tutorial for assembling and attaching the RF?

Ahh ok I hadn't considered transporting it. I plan on using the Chicago screw method myself as I wouldn't want it permanent either.
