Arctic Skull Cooling Headband

Hey everyone!

Ok, another good find. I realize that after building a Fett, I'm now focusing on how to stay in the suit longer by increasing comfort. You never know how uncomfortable the suit really is until you've had it on for 3-4 hours. The main thing for me has been the jetpack...I've got a bad back as it is, so after 2-3 hours my shoulders just burn up. But another key point has been the helmet - seeing well, breathing well, and now staying cool. I've seen people look into ice packs before, or personal cooling systems, but they all have high profiles that may bulk up the costume or not fit properly.

I found a great site while researching but it's from Australia: Neck Tie Coolers, the best personal body coolers, help beat the summer heat.

Essentially, I was looking for something that I didn't have to put in a freezer before wearing because realistically, I'm not going to lug a cooler around with me in addition to my gear. So these really stood out as they were a gel that activates by just being submerged in water. But...they were in Australia, so I figured there must be something local.

I went to a local fire safety store and was able to find these headbands that do the exact same thing. They were a whole $6 each, and are reusable:

I tried it on for a test with and without the helmet, and it works great. They are rated to be good for up to 5 hours, and just need to be resoaked to be recharged. They're low profile so it's not bulky in my helmet. I might even wear one around my neck.

Plus they make you look like a ninja.

Well, I can't really define a temperature, but they were definitely "icy cool." Not just a damp cloth. That's right - when they dry out, you just soak them again.

DeathProof I was thinking the same thing. I sweat waterfalls when working out and just the brief time I tried on the suit I was already making the suit damp. I was given a towel called Endura Cool, which has similar features that I thought about cutting up and using. But the headband can be perfect. I searched and it looks like Amazon.com sells them in the States for about $6-8, I am going to have to give it a try. Thanks.

We had similar ones for a company event that people used when it was nearing 100 degrees and they work well, but depending on how wet you get it before freezing it seems to drip or let water off as you wear it. I didn't like the water dripping down my forehead, but it was cool water versus hot sweat.

You don't have to freeze these. After you soak them, you wick all excess water off. Had it on for an hour and no water was dripping :)

Sounds like a great idea. Does it off set the helmet in anyway? I have been toying with the idea of a small hydration bladder to cut down on bucket off time. The practicality of this will only seen with testing. I use a 3 litre pressurised bladder for hill walking and is great not to mention cuts down on messing about.

I use a couple of these, different brand that look like they're slightly longer, to survive wearing the Vader suit -- but I have them neck-tie like under the costume around my neck rather than on my head. There's not enough ventilation in the Vader for the evaporation effect to do any cooling. If you guys still want cooler after these headbands, you might try the neck-shoulder area as another supplementary spot.
