Accurizing the Mystery Helmet!

Yay Sarge!
Glad to see you're still considering doing these updates.
As far as the "Drop Kick Urethane" (© 2007--Superjedi  ) goes, if you made helmets with this material, would you be able to give a ballpark estimate of how much of a price increase there would be for a kit?

I for one would be willing to go higher price-wise for a lightweight material with "better than resin" strength.

I think my own interest in FG for the helmet is that its how the original was made. There for accurate. For most a super strong urithaine will be fine. But if the point of this new version is accuracy, why hold back. I think for trooping helmets it dosnt matter what its made from.

Yup! just need to get the last of the board orders and eBay orders out of here. I'm down to 20 TOTAL now- Not much at all. :)

I want to get back to zeros orders and start with a clean slate. That way I can cast new stuff as the orders come in, and still have some free time to work on new things as well.

As far as fiberglass, I really, REALLY hate working with that stuff- it's over half a century old, it's inexact, it stinks, it's sticky, it's itchy, it gets everywhere... there HAS to be a modern material by now that's just or nearly as strong and not such a pain to work with. The new white urethane I tried from BCCProducts.com is pretty amazing except for it's high price. It's strong enough that we literally dropped, kicked and threw a helmet casting from it around the shop 10 - 12 times before it finally cracked. Also, it "acts" like injection molded styrene or hard vinyl- It's hard to explain, but it just doesn't "feel" like any urethane I've ever worked with. Also, it's flexible to a reasonable extent, and it plays nice with dremel tools. :)

Hmmm...so that new urathane stuf is pretty durable huh??? I gotta say, that the only thing that has kept me back from getting one of these in the past is that they are resin. Just was kinda leary that it wouldn't be durable enough. If that new stuff is as strong as you say, I'm really gonna be tempted to get one. Thanx for the update Sarge,
D

Does this new urethane formulation resist bending?

It would really suck if you flexed it and then all the paint on the surface cracked because you did.

Well... Don't flex it that far!!! :p

Seriously, it feels to me like the HARD vinyl Post used to use. A good quick comparison would be like thick model kit styrene.

Sarge,
Sounds really promising!
Have you by any chance done any paint tests?
Maybe hit it with some acrylic spray paint on one side and some enamel on the other, just to see if there are any issues with adhesion/bubbling/flaking/spontaneous combustion, etc. :D
