what is everyones view on abandonware?

I love nostalgia. I have 3 Sega Dreamcasts, one in every room and over 100 games for them! (over 3000 if you count the roms) Roms if you dont know, are classic games like Atari 2600, nes, Snes, and genesis that play on a system via an emulator. Sega Dreamcasts can play these and back-up dreamcast games too. They can do this mainly because the dreamcast runs on a customized version of Microsoft Windows C.E. and writing programs and burning discs are a snap to do. Now here is the moral question... if you were to do these things when the product is still in its market life, this would be copyright infringement, because they would not be receiving money for their work. But Wikipedia states abandonware as this-"Abandonware refers to computer software that is no longer sold or supported, or whose ownership may be unclear for various reasons. While the term has been applied largely to older games, other classes of software are sometimes described as such. Definitions of "abandoned" vary; generally, it refers to software no longer available for legitimate purchase or of a certain age. Software companies may change their names, go bankrupt, enter into mergers, or cease to exist for a variety of reasons. When this happens, product rights are usually transferred to another company that might not sell or support the software acquired"

Well I'm 16 and I didn't know what it meant until about a month ago:lol:

in some cases, such as with xbox and nintendo wii and DS (i can't speak for ps3, cuz ps3 ftl), those properties can't be considered abandonware, since those consoles to continue to support and distribute "classic" games through their online features. since the games that are available through those sources are commercially available, from a legal standpoint, roms and emulation of those games that have been made available can be considered piracy.

and to continue the 1337 hijack, omgwtfbbq!?!? u r t3h lulx0rz.

I just find something very wrong for a company charging you $5-$12 bucks per rom for something that should be free. What really gets my panties in a bunch lol is when they cant even format it to my screen!!! arrrrggggg!!!!! so I just play them from my dreamcast with my vga adapter and the look perfect!!
