Warning: Issues with Ponteworks

MachineCraft

Active Hunter
Hey guys,

I want to start off by saying this is not a post I have been looking forward to creating, and I hate that it is come to this. However, it's time that we get a resolution going, and the community needs to be aware of what's been happening. This might take a little story telling, so bear with me.

-------------

In April of 2015, I (like many of you) went to Celebration 7 in Anaheim. I had an absolute blast, and met some really great people, including many of you and Rick Ponte. One group of individuals I met were employees at EA who as you may know were working on Battlefront, and are working on an unreleased Star Wars game. One of these individuals and I kept in touch after Celebration, and eventually he got me in touch with an EA employee named Scott, who was very interested in putting together a Fett costume.

Scott is an Art Director with EA and currently lives and works in at the EA Shanghai location. Scott let me know that he wanted a suit that could be both displayed and worn to events, and that accuracy was important to him being that a lot of people will see this suit. After a few weeks of back and forth with him, he asked if I could put together a price list together, and I got to work.

-------------

In late May/Early June, I got into contact with Rick Ponte, and I asked him if he would be interested in working on this commission. Rick seemed to be very excited and was anxious to take on the project. I asked him multiple times if he would be able to meet the desired deadline of October, and while he said it would be close, that he would make it happen. He also agreed to complete a build thread and keep us regularly updated on the project. Once I had his agreement, I gave Scott final pricing and the particulars of how the commission would work, and he began sending me funds for the project. I also had volunteered all of my parts to help him build an awesome costume with all of the awesome metal parts that make Fett great.

Once I had the money in my account, I immediately began ordering parts to get this project moving along. The first purchase I made was from Chris (Fettpride). I let Chris know about the project well ahead of time, and he helped me out with expediting things so that we could meet the project deadline. Rick received the hard parts for the costume on 7/6/2015, and I agreed to put a little over half of the payment down to get the project started.

Over the next few months, Rick was very good at communicating with me, and promised that although he didn't have time for a build thread due to work, things were progressing very smoothly. Rick had received mostly every part needed to complete the commission by the first week of August, and was very adamant that the project would be completed on time.

-------------

After talking with Scott and looking into shipping costs, we as a group decided it would be best to wait until Scott was visiting the US to ship everything. Scott was unsure of when exactly he would be in the US, but knew it would be around December, which we took as a good thing because it would allow Rick a couple more months to work on the commission and make sure we really got things right. Eventually Scott did find out the day he would be in the US, and it was going to be in January. I regularly asked Rick for pictures and updates on progress, and he did eventually send pictures that looked like the project was at least nearing completion. However, while we did see armor and soft parts, there were no pictures of the jetpack or helmet.

As we neared the date in January that Scott would be in town, Rick began to communicate that he might have to substitute his own armor in for Scotts, and then he would just use what we had sent for Scott as his own suit. I let him know this was fine as long as it was exactly the same as the stuff that we had sent. Rick agreed and assured me that it was exactly what we were expecting it to be. However, he said that he would need to ship the helmet and one of the gauntlets at a later date because he hadn't finished them. He also put a lot of the blame on Fettpride saying that the armor he had painted had cracked and was defective due to poor craftsmanship on Fettpride's part (I am apparently not the only person who had gotten this excuse from Rick). Rick had promised that he would send these two things to China on his own dime. In the meantime, rather than shipping everything in a timely manner, Rick went on a little trip that would only allow him to come back and ship the project in time for it to be on time if it was overnighted, which would cost about $800. Apparently it was more important for him to go out to a WW2 reenactment than finish a project that he had been paid a lot of money to do. What he does with his time is none of my business, but completing and shipping the project before going on this trip, and being able to ship it via ground sure would have been the economical way to do things if you ask me. I'd like to tell you this is where the story ends, but it isn't.

-------------

Once Scott received the items, he had a couple initial concerns. Apparently, the items were not packed very well at all (despite being put in Pelican cases), and two of the items showed heavy damage. One of the items was a gauntlet, which had too much weight on it and had a pretty bad crack. The other item was the jetpack, which had unusual wear on it for a new jetpack, almost as if it had very heavy usage. I shared pictures of the items with a few people, and then noticed some really strange things. The suit that Scott received didn't seem to have any of my metal parts (remember, I sent Rick all of my parts for this suit), and didn't look correct. That's when we noticed it. Rick didn't send Scott of the parts we sent him to be used on this project except for the soft parts, which were not weathered nearly as well as they should have been. Instead, Rick had sent all of his old gear to Scott, which was not at all what we were promised, and was nowhere near acceptable. Rick defended himself saying that he thought he felt he sent Scott the most accurate suit that he could, which was a giant kick in the teeth considering Scott only received 2 of the 12+ MachineCraft parts I had sent him to be used on the suit. Furthermore, why in the hell would I want other maker's parts on a suit that I helped put together? This was a **** poor excuse for Rick's procrastination, and an outright insult to me as the person orchestrating the commission.

After quite a bit of research, I had found that the parts Scott received were in fact all of Rick's old equipment, and I even screen-matched the armor to armor that Rick was wearing at a previous Celebration (before his updated colors and methods that he had been very proud to tell us about on TDH). Thus, it was confirmed, the parts Scott received were Rick's recycled suit, and because the suit went straight to Scott, I'm guessing he didn't think we would catch it. But, we did, and Scott opted to send the whole suit back to Rick, minus the soft parts that Rick didn't need to work on. I talked with Rick about how disappointed we were, and he swore that he cared about nothing more than about making it right, and his work wasn't finished until Scott was happy with the costume.

Thus, Rick agreed that he would be start working on the parts we had sent him, and that he would regularly update us with pictures and a build thread this time around. Unfortunately, as you've probably guessed, this hasn't happened. Rick assured us the project would be completed in the April/May timeframe, and while I understand he may have some personal things going on in his life, it is now nearly August, and we will likely not be meeting our new deadline of August 1st. I created this thread to let everyone know about the trouble I have had with Rick, and hopefully to use this as a line of communication with him. I have already spoke with the admins and provided proof of the claims mentioned here, and will post them publicly if it comes to it.

-------------

Rick, I know things may not be going great for you right now, but this project was a great opportunity for both you and I to both get our names out there, and build some great relationships with people who work with Star Wars for a living. It's unfortunate that it's come to this, but it's time for a resolution. I don't think you're a bad guy, but I think you've bitten off more than you can chew, and it's time that you spit it out. I know there are others that feel this way, and the only thing that I ask of you is that you do the right thing and help me get the parts back so that I can get them out to other painters and get this project completed for Scott.

-------------

If anyone has any questions, please let me know. I apologize for the novel and any grammatical errors, I'll be happy to clear anything up if there's any holes in my story.

I certainly hope this matter is treated as seriously as was Fettpride's, and that a ban is imminent, despite Ponte's relationship with prominent members of the board.

That said, this is unfortunate, and I hope that the situation is resolved positively. Considering the customer is involved with a company that published Battlefront (featuring BEAUTIFULLY scanned and mapped Boba Fett costume pieces), I would've liked his experience with TDH to be a shining example of what this community has to offer. News travels fast in the Old West.

That was my 'nice' post.

Never bite off more than you can chew.
Never say you've done something you haven't.
Never get blinded by the light because of 'celebrity' status.

The gentleman from EA has gotten a bum deal. I'm curious, since Rick apparently still has possession of the armor and helmet and jetpack purchased for the job, is there any hope of recovering it, at this point? I'm assuming that the OP has personal contact information, so it would seem that Rick has been ignoring messages. If he continues to do so, then the victims are the buyer, the OP and Fettpride. No one can reasonably expect for MachineCraft or Fettpride to be able to provide cost-free replacements to the buyer without incurring significant financial loss, and since very few of us are wealthy, this bad deal could end up significantly impacting people's lives.

I'm curious, what was Ponte's goal? A free set of armor and machined parts? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that Ponte was a big dog around here (he was selected to paint the Anovos prototype). I wouldn't think he would need to stoop that low.

I'm definitely incensed by this, and I CERTAINLY hope Rick turns up. This kind of thing is beneath him (?).

First let me say I'm having issues myself with Rick but hardly to this extent. I agree the substitution of parts is inexcusable and has likely put a heavy black market on Ricks reputation.

It does however need to be said since I don't think Rick has posted openly that a few months back Rick was terminated from his job without a reason provided and as a contractor none was needed in this case only a pale attempt by his employer. That started a slide for him that was compounded by the news that his mother has brain cancer and apparently has no recourse for treatment and at this point will be losing her home.

None of this explains how or why when it comes to the switching parts or procrastination in the months prior to all this but it does need to be said. Calling him out for reprisal is necessary but calling for banning him over a single instance when FP got a pass over years of non delivery and more is outright ridiculous.

Yes Rick needs to come clean he's been proven to be in the wrong but I'm sure this wasn't outright malicious just extremely poor judgment on his part.

The real consequences he'll face are losing business but to completely cut off what avenue he does have in light of the information ice provided would be overzealous.

I appreciate you sticking up for your friend. That's good of you.

I have to say, though, calling for his ban is not out of line, and shielding against that by saying that Fettpride got a pass for years isn't a well thought out argument. In addition to a long history of wait times, FP has a long history of service, unmatched by Ponte or anyone else here. So it's a wash.

Bottom line is...why the silence? Why the running? Ponte has a solid amount of good will here. He can spend some of that capital with no questions asked, ESPECIALLY in the event of a crisis.

And no matter what, attempting the old Switcheroo is just dirty. Period. That ALONE is good cause for a ban from any forum. And of course, he STILL has the items.

And a HORRIBLE way to represent this community. Even if the buyer gets sorted out, do you think he'll have anything good to say about his experience here?

Sorry for the rant, and it's not directed at you personally, wood, but this kinda thing makes my blood boil.

I hope it works out for the guy who commissioned the whole thing. Because ponte decided take good armor and parts then send old stuff to the buyer, it's going to put a black mark on a lot of people here. Bad news travels quickly and this is very bad news.
If he had just been honest about what was going on at home, steps could have been taken and other painters could have been found, but due to what has happened many people will suffer from his actions.
Regardless of who he knows here, there should be some repercussions; you can't do what he did and not pay a price.

Let me say that I'm just as appalled at Rick switching out stuff as Dakota or anyone else and furthermore I can't understand why he would even consider doing it but he did.

I feel that when someone has done a wrong and caught then just banned that they're really being let off the hook. Rick needs to face the music and dance to it not turn off the radio. Now everyone knows what has happened and it's his chance to fix it and restore his good standing or not.

I personally have zero say in banning him or not.

This is in response to Dakota's post.

As many of you are aware, I have been absent from this site, and much of social media for quite a while. I'm not trying to make a novel out of this post, so I'll keep it as short as possible: In April, my position at my IT career was no longer available, and I was let go. My long commutes, grueling hours (weekday and weekends) had already been taking a toll for quite some time before then, affecting a lot of the progress and communications on prop projects. About two weeks later, my mom broke the news to me she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. For months, I've been personally dealing with those factors, in addition to working on commissions. As many of my friends know, I've been extremely absent and non-communicative, pretty much regularly communicating with my wife, and speaking with customers in the area to look at / pick up their commissions.

With Scott's Boba Fett SE project Dakota and I have been collaborating on, it turned into something I was upset didn't meet Scott's expectations, and there should have absolutely been more communication. What Dakota mentioned about the issues in Fettpride's armor that I had were valid, issues I've had on other customers' FP armor as well with weak spots, cracking, and some areas being almost mush. To say this set me back would be an understatement, and I had to replace parts with many of my personal parts to make the timeline for shipment to Scott, including the use of metal parts that were not originally Dakotas because they were epoxied/fixed to the parts. While I considered those armor parts to be an exquisite representation of the Boba Fett Special Edition costume, Scott deserved the use of Dakota's metal parts in addition to new armor with a new paint-up. Period.

Dakota and I have spoken and come to an agreement to get Scott the best ROTJ SE Fett possible on an agreed timeline. I'm also speaking with my other customers to get their commissioned parts squared away as well.

I never wanted to air my personal problems with my job and my mother's medical issues for everyone to see, but I realize I should have been much more streamlined with communication, which is something I intend to fix going forward.

My aim has always been to create the end-all Boba costume for my customers...to give them the best paint-ups they could ask for. I appreciate those who I've spoken to and their patience, and the only thing to do from here on out is fix things and give my customers a product they can be proud to wear or display.

Ive had great communication with Rick and he has gone a little MIA recently and had shared with me his Mothers Medical issues. I too have an outstanding FPH2 RoTJ in Ricks possession and a couple of proposed timelines have passed. No biggy. but certainly not discounting others plights at all.in fact it cost me a huge sale down here in Oz .. I would be lying if I didn't say ive not been nervous, and to some degree have written off this project. I have close to 900 USD already invested in the Commish and lid. Im supa stoked to see Rick responding. I must say I was referred to Rick via Fett4real (Dom) as his work was outstanding and Dom was heading O/S for a year. Ricks enthusiasms for my project was great and his work is steller. A loss of Rick will be a huge loss to the TDH community. But Rick if your reading this Ive gotta get his across the line soon brutha. Take care buddy ur a super cat, with a tonne of life stuff going down at the same time. I cant wait to have the FPH2 with yr genius in my possession. This post has reignited my hope for this project.

Let me first come out and say this, I think Rick is an extremely talented painter and honestly a good guy. Now that being said, like Dakota this is a posting I’ve dreaded having to make but it’s time for the greater community to be aware of Rick and Ponteworks. First, some time line information:

June 23rd 2014: Discussed with Rick about a commission for 1 ESB Helmet and Set of Armor.

June 27th 2014: Paid ½ of the commission total to Rick. Turn around time for commission was stated as Fall 2014 on contract.

September 16th 2014: Fett Pride Armor and Helmet arrive at Rick’s. The remaining ½ payment is delivered to Rick for the commission. Commission is now paid in full.

October 7th 2014: Rick creates duel build thread for his personal FPH2 and mine. First picture of my helmet (untouched can be seen in 1st post in thread.)

January 21st 2015: In Rick’s build thread picture of 2 primed helmets can be seen. No confirmation that any of those 2 helmets are mine.

February 15th 2015: Again, in Rick’s build thread picture of 2 primed helmets can be seen. No confirmation that any of those 2 helmets are mine.

May 1st 2015: His Helmet is “99.2” complete and ready for Celebration Anaheim.

January 3rd 2016: Asked Rick for an update after months of being promised pictures/updates. Rick’s response was the armor had base green applied (This isn’t the entire truth. See June 10th 2016) and helmet was untouched as he was waiting for “Pantone colors from the archives”.

At this point he’s had my helmet and armor for 16th months and has DONE NOTHING.

February 3rd 2016: I asked Rick if commission would be finished on JUNE 10TH 2016 as I would be in town and could pick up the entire commission. His response “Hell yes June 10”.

April 1st 2016: Asked if we were still on for competition for June. He confirmed yes. Still no pictures of helmet or armor have ever been sent.

May 15th 2016: Once again asked if June 10th was going to work. He confirmed yes. Still once again, no pictures of helmet or armor have been sent.

May 24th: Once again asked to confirm June 10th. Rick confirmed yes. Still no pictures after asking repeatedly.

June 10th 2016: I arrive at Ricks. Only pieces of my commission that are finished: Back plate (Only item I leave with), right chest piece and stomach plate. Left chest piece is missing the logo. No signs of my shoulders, knees, cod, kidney and helmet. I leave everything with Rick in order to get sized up on my mannequin. I tell Rick that I will be back in town on July 15th due to moving across country and ask Rick if everything will be complete by then. He said yes.

FOR 22 MONTHS A MAJORITY OF MY ORDER HASN’T BEEN TOUCHED.

June 20th 2016: Rick sends FIRST PICTURES OF MY HELMET. Right lower cheek is shown and the right earpiece is shown. (Will have to verify and match that these are my actual helmet and ear piece at a later date if my helmet ever gets finished. I have doubts that these are my helmet and earpiece)

July 15th 2016: Arrive at Ricks. Helmet is not done. Knees are not done. Only piece of armor that is fully finished is back plate. I take backplate with me and everything else I left besides the armor and my Clothear vest and helmet (Which is out, all taped up besides the visor area.) Rick said he only need a little more time to finish. I agree.

July 19th 2016: Dakota posts his thread regarding his issues with Rick. Multiple people come out and express their frustration with Rick and him not finishing his commissions.

I reach out to Rick to get an idea what’s going on with my commission and how is Dakota’s situation is going to affect my commission. I gave Rick the following deadline:

1: my vest along with the chest armor be sent this week and completed along with the finished kidney plate, my ammo and girth belts.
2: Helmet, cod and shoulders be complete and sent by the week of August 15th.
3: If deadline isn't met, items will be sent back.

Rick agreed.

July 22nd 2016: Rick sends me a picture of the finished right chest piece with logo and the finished left shoulder.

July 30th 2016: Rick sends me a picture of the finished cod piece.

August 4th 2016: Rick gets my armor, vest and belts shipped out. I pay for 2 day shipping.

August 13th 2016: Rick delivers bcurtis’s helmet and finishes his commission. Rick, at this point has had my commission on tap longer and has had my helmet and armor months longer than bcurtis’s.

August 15th 2016: Deadline for helmet delivery passes. I do not request helmet back. I give Rick more time.

August 16th 2016: I ask for an update on Helmet. Rick states “visor trim is what I need to finish up”. Assuming this is true helmet should almost be completed. No new pictures of helmet since June 20th 2016.

August 22nd 2016: Asked for update on helmet and pictures. No response.

August 23rd 2016: Asked for update on helmet and pictures. No response.

August 24th 2016: Asked for update on helmet and pictures. No response.

August 27th 2016: Asked for update on helmet and pictures. Rick said pictures would be sent later that night. No pictures were sent.

August 28th 2016: Rick touched base. No updates and No pictures. More excuses of commission mismanagement. Tells me my Fett is for display and isn’t as important to his Poe belts. Working on newer commissions while I’ve been waiting 2 years.

Now the Story:

On June 27th 2014 I entered into a contract with Ponteworks for a commission consisting of 1 ESB Helmet and 1 set of ESB armor to be painted and delivered in the fall of 2014. At that point I paid ½ the cost of the commission. Fett Pride delivered my order to Rick directly and arrived to him on September 16th 2014 that is the same date the other ½ of the commission was delivered to Rick Ponte. For the next 15 months in Rick’s defense I only asked for status updates, in which he responded my commission was being worked on. I never asked for a firm delivery date and was hoping Rick would let me know when the commission was finished. I finally asked Rick for a firm date to have my commission completed and I would pick my helmet and armor up at his house so it didn’t need to be shipped on June 10th. Rick agreed. During the course of the past 5 months I asked Rick multiple times for “work in progress” pictures. Rick said he would and never delivered on that promise. On June 10th I visited Rick and only items that were finished were a few pieces of the chest armor, black plate and kidney. Rick agreed that July 15th everything that wasn’t finished would be complete and ready for pick up as I was moving from NY to FLA and needed to make the drive anyway. When I arrived on July 15th, surprise! It wasn’t done! Once Dakota’s thread was posted I basically demanded that my commission be a priority. Rick was able to hit one deadline to have my armor (besides the knees) to be sent to me mid-August and I am still waiting on the helmet and knees. Rick then missed the August 15th deadline to have the helmet finished. Now we’re almost in September, which would mark 2 years, and the helmet hardly has any work done on it. The bottom left check portion has some detail painted on and that’s all we’ve seen expect some primer and stencil marks. Unacceptable.

Rick mislead me for the course of almost 2 years on the status of my order while continuing to take other commissions, start project runs of Resistance Flight belts (working on these instead of working on my helmet after he missed our August deadline), finished his personal helmet (which the WIP thread on the TDH was supposed to include my helmet, it did not.), work on another personal helmet for Dragoncon Cosplay and work on Anovos’ helmet prototype. I have spent $985 just on the commission alone.

During the course of communication with Rick I know that he’s gone through personal issues during the course of the past 2 years and this will all remain private. I understand delays, it happens. This isn’t Wal-Mart. I never once demanded my commission to be finished on an unreasonable schedule. 24 months is an unacceptable time not to have a commission finished and to be completely ignored for days on end without pictures or updates. It’s 2016. Unacceptable.

Besides Dakota and myself there are more confirmed members here who have commissioned Rick for Boba Fett pieces. I understand that Dakota is the 3rd party and his name is on the line with this commission for EA but I commissioned Rick long before money was exchanged. I expected my commission to be complete in a reasonable time and before more new orders that Rick took on. The most insulting thing about the situation besides the lies, empty and broken promises but not taking my order seriously or with any sense of urgency. When he was working on his Poe belts in order to make them available to his customers in time for Dragoncon was the last straw. I have been waiting for two years. My helmet has hardly been worked on. Rick told me straight up that the reason he wasn’t working on my commission is because it’s only for display purposes and there was no need to finish my order in a timely manner due to the fact that it was going to sit in my room. This is unacceptable. I paid up front and as a customer I would expect some professionalism.

This isn’t a flame war or a witch-hunt. This is a fair warning to people looking to work with Rick and expecting him to deliver. As much as Rick is a talented painter and a cool guy the headache and money that have gone into this project has not been worth it. There is no professionalism or courtesy to the customer. I also have all screen shots of original PMs and a Facebook chat history that’s been screen shot with all the promises Rick has made and broken in the past 2 years. These will not be put out there to the public but will be available to any Moderator who will want to see them.

I also wonder why the thread from 2012 when Rick first was called out on no delivery, no communication, and waited over 15 months to return a helmet was deleted. If you search you can find Rick’s thread to clear his name but any evidence on the Original Poster has been deleted. I hope this isn’t going to be the same situation.

2+ months and no updates???

Scratch that. I doubt I'll see my helmet/knees complete before the end of the month. I'm assuming MIDDLE of November until completion. Getting close to MONTH 26. Hopefully more to report soon.

Talked to Rick. Final deadline for shipping of my Helmet and Knees will be 11/14 finished or unfinished. It'll be exactly 26 months to the week and that's 100% unacceptable for a commission under ANY circumstances. Updates to follow.

If your knees aren't done, let me know. I'll do them for you for free. And I won't take a month to turn them. All you pay is shipping to and from, I'll cover the paint and labor.
Just feel bad for you bro...

I know an update from Dakota is coming shortly but I have come to the conclusion that Rick won't be finishing my Helmet or Knees. It's been 26 months. There are multiple commissions outstanding that Rick owes people here related to Boba Fett. I know of 5 commissions confirmed. If his prices remained the same we're looking at least $4,000 in unfinished Fett commissions.

I have been waiting 4 days for PICTURES of the current status of my project. He has an iPhone and it's 2016. NO EXCUSE. Rick said he's my friend but every action has shown this is not true.

Rick also owes close to 40 individuals their Poe belts from RPF and Rebel Legion runs. This run alone totals over $9,000 in owed work. You can see the complete list on therpf.com

I suggest everyone who has business with Rick come to the conclusion that he's a liar and never intended to finish any of his commissions. I am sorry that it has come to this.
