A perilous night

I just got up after the night shift here in Reykjavík Iceland. As some know I´m a police officer like so many here.

Last night started out like any other, drunk guy beating his wife, what a weasle.

I managed to grap something to eat and aroun 3:30 I got a F-1 call from distpatch (f-1 is Code 3 life is in dagner get ther as fast as you can) there was a report of a huge fire downtown, where buildings are build tight and mostly made of timber and built around the begining of the last century.

When I got down town I saw one of the biggest fires I have ever seen in an appartment building. No one knew how many lived there and if anyone was inside. Lucky no one died.

I saw a movement in the basement, wich housed an appartment, there was a couple trying to get out, I had to shout at them and drag them out. Note the whole building was on fire, and the reason the basement was not on fire was because it was concrete. Glass was flying all over the place, Firedepartment had not arraived.

I managed to drag them out, but at the last minute the female rips loose from my grip and dives deeper inside the appartment. H runs out and I follow her. I find here in side looking for valuables then the lights fuse out total darkenss.

I´ve never been so thankful for my Surefire flashlight, I just thought need to get out I´ve got a blazing inferno above me.

We managed to get out. What a night. Two firefigters were almost burned to death inside the building and they jumpt out a window and on a balcony, the balcony was a bonus, they were gona leap out and take the chance.

A friend of mine (PO) raises a ladder to the balcony wich is 6 to 8 meters from the ground. But the flames are getting to them so one FIrefighter uses the ladder but falls from the top on to my friend, but the other scaled down a plole.

you can see the press coverage here http://mbl.is/mm/frettir/innlent/2009/01/16/grunur_um_ikveikju/

It is Icelandic, you can see me at the very end, I got my back turned to the camera.

Here is another clip from a news, you can see the fireman with a propane tank climbing down the ladder if the camera would have not panned you would have seen him fall down.

Mobius, I am so glad that God was watching over you and that you are safe.

She went' back inside??????? For "valuables"??

There is nothing in my house that is worth going back for; its all insured. If I was out of the house, and it was on fire, I would walk to the nearest bar and have a beer and plan how I would spend the insurance money.

I hope the firefighters are OK.

Wow, glad to hear no one was hurt! I gotta take a second to thank you for your service in helping these people, I'm sure they were very thankful, but wow, running back into the place for stuff? Thats deffintly not a great idea.

Thanks for the kind words, I never look at me as a hero, it´s a job that has to be done.

But it is good to know when you know you realy helped some one out wheather from a live threatening situation or just talke some sense into their heads that made them turne their life around.

But I got a call from a reported for some news media the other day, and they were looking for real heros for 2008 and some one called in and told them about when my bayb girl 18 months went into respiratory stop few says before christmas. I just gotten home after a Knee surgery, it was after des 15th. My wife came running with my daughter that had turned blue and was fighting for a breath. I took her outside, as it was freezing there cause somtimes that can help infants breath, so I was told, so while out there I had to administer mouth to mouth she began to breath but started hyperventilating, paper bag over her mouth and nose and she got better and soon fell a sleep, exhausted. The paramedics came and the doktor and took her to the childreshospital. She is fine now, as she should be.

Well turning back to the reporter I told him that this is what I´ve done so often I lost count, and he should find some one else that deserved this better than me. There are people out there that saves some one and that is a huge deal for them. But for me it´s was like any other day. But I was scared can´t deny that. But through it all I was cool just doing what had to be done.

Well, if I ever see a 'hero' more real than you, I'll let you know. Great work can be done by little men. It takes a great man to be humble about himself. Great work man, I'm glad that there are people like you in this world.. Makes the planet a little better place to live.
Keep up the good work man, and be careful.
