PAYPAL FEES!!!! GRRRR!!

Hey there everyone. I want to start a petition going for charging people for paypal fees. This has really been bothering me since i first saw people doing it. I personally try to stay away from these sellers, because it's ridiculous.

I have sold PLENTY of stuff here, on ebay, and on other forums. I HAVE never, and WILL never charge a buyer paypal fees. I take paypal because it is a convenience, and I know it's not a free service. besides that, the fee is always so small, why even worry about the 2 or 3% they take out. I think we need to ban charging paypal fees. Think about the following points:

1. if you are going to sell something at a price, ask for a little more to take care of the paypal fees if you really NEED that extra $1.25.

2. why should buyers have to give the seller even more than what the seller is asking for?

3. if you are accepting paypal, then you know you are paying for the service...don't make the buyer pay for the expense that is charged to the SELLER!!!

4. if you don't want to pay paypal fees DON'T USE PAYPAL...IT'S NOT FREE!! make your buyers pay in check or money order

Think about these things before you decide to accept paypal. If you don't want to pay the fees, then don't bother accepting it. Is there anyone out there who's with me on this?

Amen brother
Agree 100 %
I never milk my buyers for Paypal fees
It's not their fault i don't take checks or money orders
It's my decision to use paypal, so i pay for that myself.
It'll never happen here though
we can't regulate the charges that people apply to their sales

i'd rather they have a higher price than know they are charging the fee on me.

i just think it stinks the paypal fees and ebay fees keep going up.

somebodies getting rich

count me in. When I pay with my credit card for something, the vendor doesn't ask me to pay for the credit card fee that they get charged. It's because its the price of doing business. It's always been that way. Up until Paypal, where people who would never be able to open a shop or business in the past are suddenly all over the place on the internet selling their stuff, and intent on doing business based on a completely different business model, one that is totally without consideration of a customer-based point of view. I am glad we don't really see that here at TDH. The business model here is nearly utopian compared with the rest of the internets.

I'd prefer paying a flat $45 vs. $46.80. Just easier. However, that $1.80 will get me a soda and a kit-kat at the machines at school.

I totally agree that the fee is covenience for the seller, and the buyer should not have to pick up the tab. And Lufo is right. I own a business on the side, and payment is made by our customers with a credit/debit card about 90% of the time. We don't do the minium purchase thing either. The other option would be to accept cash only. Yeah, that will work (n). Also, I know that the stuff that I sell here is going to a good home, and is being kept within the family :). Another reason not to charge our friends a Paypal fee. Count me in on this one!

Not that i'm against you because I don't ask for more either but, You say you are going to refuse paying paypal fees, but if its already added to the sellers final price you will pay it? I guess you are just asking sellers not to actually write an extra line asking for it.

Like I said I don't ask for more and I don't include it either, but I can see why some would. Example.. If I do a run of 10 belts at my new prices for this year, paypal will deduct $10 from each one. Which means I'll be losing $100 to paypal fees. It sucks but I wouldn't be able to do much without them. So I'm ok with it. Just though that may be one of the reasons why.

I don't sell much, but I don't mind when sellers add the fee.

If the seller wants $50, he should charge me whatever he needs to charge me to get $50 out of it. If I'm not cool with that, I won't buy it.

When I paypal people, I often round up a bit to help offset the fees anyway.

I think of it as a convenience for me. I'd rather pay the 3% than have to find a checkbook, write a check, mail it, and wait 2 weeks for the seller to get the check / deposit it / let it clear.

Thanks everyone...this is some good conversation here. taco, the main thing is, I don't want to have someone charge me $45 for something, then add the 3.4% (I think that's what it is) in addition. if the seller is charging you those fees, paypal is still taking out 3.4% of that extra fee, so the seller still isn't even getting all of the fee money

EXACTLY. The fee is a percentage of the total. There is no way a seller can literally cover the fee by adding to the cost, because the fee increases with the cost. If a seller increases his cost to cover what the fee would be at a lower product cost, that is their choice, of course.

Only time I ask them to incure paypal fees if im selling something well over $400-500 but i always state that before the auction or sale is complete so theres no surprises.

Hmm, I've always assumed most sellers would make back the difference from the postage price charged, as it's usually much more than the postage is actually worth.

I know that pp fees can be a pain, but at the end of the day i would rather see a seller with a higher starting price and unknowingly pay the fee than see them say if you want to use pp your going to have to pay x % more..

Also if you use the personal section instead of the goods section to make the payment, normally there is no fee and it there is you can choose to make tha payment or let the receprient pay..

I wouldn't say I'd not buy from someone who adds pp fees onto the price, but I wouldn't like to see it, like most have said the seller accepts the fees as part of the sale and if you want to clear 'x' amount on an item you'd add the fees/postage on to that amount, surely.
How many of us have paid for something by credit card to have a 'surcharge' added because we've paid using a credit card?

I will have to chime in here.. although I don't like charging paypal fees, in todays times I have to. I include it in my fee....I know I know I suck but it is what it is. In the end as a seller it's the only way I can have a secure transaction, and paypal protects that for me....cause in the end I really don't know who I'm selling to, as I don't know most buyers here on a personal level..........I may be in the minority here but it's just secure in terms of payments and refunds... and works for me.:facepalm

I prefer not to use paypal at all! If I have to pay using it that is fine but ussually I will not sell something and use it. I saw my husband use it when selling 2 different costumes. All you have to do is cite quality or say the pictured item was not what was sent.
Paypal always rules on the buyers side. This leaves a big hole where overseas scam artists can pay, get their money back and never return the product. He lost 2 costumes well over 1,500.00. and paid the % on top of that.
Paypal is my absolute last resort!!

I am going to have to agree with Spidey. I also dont care if the seller is upfront and tells me to add the 3% or if they have already added it in on the total price.

If it's a $40 item then what's and extra $1.50, but the kicker is when I go to sell a $1000.00 item. That three percent starts to add up as a seller.
Also if you can afford an item that cost that much then most of the time its really no biggie to throw in the 3% on top.

Anyway, the way I see it is if you somehow got a ban on the paypal fee "add on" then people would deffinitly just add it in to the total cost of the item anyway.

If you are using eBay, charging somebody extra for using PayPal is actually against the rules.

If somebody is not using eBay, then I'll echo what has already been said that it should definitely be built into the price if PayPal is offered. Otherwise it's just a frustration to the buyer ... kind of like when he/she sees what looks like a great deal only to realize an excessive S&H charge was never displayed and the deal no longer looks good.

I can only see 1 exception to this: if the seller is trying to make zero-profit because he/she stated that's what the outcome would be. A perfect example would be a TDHer organizing a group function (i.e. convention dinner) and splitting costs amongst members. Posting the price that does include a PayPal fee would result in the person making a profit if somebody pays with a check or money order. Not including the PayPal fee will cause the person to take a hit if a PayPal payment is made. The pofit or loss may not seem like much ... but it will add up if there are many buyers.

However, if you're going to incorporate PayPal fees into the price or find the need to charge the buyer extra for PayPal, then PLEASE use the correct fee amount. I personally get EXTREMELY irritated when I am quoted a 3.5% (I've even been quoted a 4%) PayPal fee. Get yourself the appropraite type PayPal account and use the proper formula: FEE = (PRICE + $0.30) / 0.971

I get what both sides say. I don't care if the fee is included in the price at all. but, you say "oh, it's only $1.50 more, it's not biggie". If it's no biggie, why charge it, hmm? I just really don't get why people add a fee to something they'll already be making a profit on, no matter the price. even a $1000 item will only be around a $30 fee. if your selling something for that much scratch, is that extra $$ really that detrimental? If it's something selling for little or no profit, I think it's acceptable to do. I think as long as poeple don't say "hey, add ____% to the total," it'd be a better place...haha. just put it in, and don't mention it. if the fee is, say, $1.50, add $2 to the total asking price. It is TRULY that simple.
