Concerning Y-wings and R5s.

The Ultimate

New Hunter
Can anyone answer me this? On one of the toy versions of the Y-wing, the included astromech co-pilot is a yellow R5. I've also seen R5s depicted as Y-wing co-pilots elsewhere. Subsequently, I have a question. If anyone has read the new essential guide to droids, it describes the R5 series astromechs as being terrible droids, especially for piloting.
So my question is, why would the rebellion use R5 astromechs as co-pilots? Simply a lack of funds to use better droids? Or something else? Or am I over-analyzing something trivial? Help me out, guys!

I don't know man, it's a toy...you think Hasbro or Kenner cared that much about what they included with the pack? All that was important is that they didn't include R2 in the package, cause that's Luke's droid.

Probably looking too much into it, but if you're bored maybe that's a fun thing to think about.

Yeah. Well, I have insomnia and the question first crossed my mind around 4 in the morning, looking at toys on my laptop. You're right, it probably is just an issue of Hasbro not having as obsessive a knowledge as us here on TDH! :)

in my opinion yellow droids match the y-wing better than blue or red. its possible the rebbel alliance was more concerned with the looks... hehe joking.

for what i know the R5 was terrible compared to the newer versions. that does, however, render it useless

From what I remember from reading the essential guide to droids (I don't own the book, so I can't reference it right now), the R5s were terrible compared to both the earlier and the later models. The R5 was supposed to be the misstep in IA's legacy. While I do agree the yellow R5 looks better, it just doesn't make sense logically to have an R5 in the socket. But like Clayster said, Hasbro probably just didn't care which droid was in the socket, as long as it wasn't R2.

But if I was gonna guess based on the actual story, I would assume it was based off a lack of funds in the Rebellion.
