tjr2d2's "Gotta Start Somewhere!" ESB Build

You've made some very good progress towards your suit. If you don't mind me asking, how much have you spent so far on your gear?

Thank You very much RoninFett. It is hard for me to put an exact figure on all of it, especially since I did not keep a proper record of everything, but suffice to say it was not cheap. I will say that so far everything I currently have is easily in the thousands.

When I started this project, i said that if I am going to do this, I am gonna do it right, with the right props from the right vendors, (within my budget of course) which is what's so great about sites like TDH and theRPF, there are so many awesome vendors, prop builders, painters, etc, to possibly fit any/all budget and level of costume building skill(s).

Not that I am worthy to, but If I were to give any advice, it is to research, shop around, take your time and plan accordingly. This last year and a half (or so) has been a labor of love for me, I am enjoying the heck out of this project, broken T-Visors and all. I can only hope that when all is said and done, my suit will be up to TDH standards and 501st approved!

And here we go with some wet sanding (600 grit wet/dry sandpaper) to try and smooth this bad boy out a bit. Many Thanks to Catbread for the suggestion!

Starting to look and feel a heck of a lot better already. Gonna let it sit overnight to dry and lay on another coat or two tomorrow, then it should be all ready for the next step.

Gotta admit I was a bit worried about this next bit because I am not really good at anything when it comes to electronics. That being said since it was a bit on the humid side to put more primer on the bucket today, I figured I would take a stab at putting the rangefinder together and install the self contained lighting system I purchased. Wish me luck!

So far so good, with a little mechanical manipulation I managed to get the board/lights in the topper.

next I put the battery in, crossed my fingers and.....

let there be light! :)

Quick little project here. Taking some time this morning to concentrate on the rangefinder stalk. Buffed it out with a little bit of "rub-n-buff" silver leaf. I think it came out pretty good.

Wanted to take some time today and work on the rangefinder topper. After (very carefully!!) taking the electronics out, I got some primer on it and then started to paint both it and the little Polaroid lens piece.

I think the topper looks okay, so I am now going to attempt some topical painting of the little bits of silver damage. I will be using a couple different sizes of brushes (6,5,3) and plain old toothpicks to try and get the more sharper points. Also, following RafalFett's incredibly awesome stencil reference images, these are so helpful!

lesson learned, less is always better. For some bits (if not ALL of them) I used too much silver, but after it dried I either scrapped it off with a clean toothpick or just painted over with more black.

Now after getting the rangefinder topper and stalk all painted up, i think I am about ready to begin putting some paint on the bucket! But first...

gotta prep!
