Origin of the Braids?

Just wondering if anyone knows off hand if Boba Fett's wookie scalp braids are ever dealt with in the novels or is this just a part of the costume that's never been dealt with? To my shame I haven't been able to find/read as many as I'd like. I posted this picture of and outing a few of us did to the local library for a star wars activity day ( hour and a half really) and a friend (a Darth Maul) was asking about the picture. I was trying to explain the joke.
