Official Carrying your blaster in public thread

I don't know how well it would work for some larger cities with multiple police districts, each with their own rules and sanctions regarding this kind of stuff, but it worked fine for me.

how bit a town do you live in? i know in my city we've got so many different police officers that would never work!

Fairly large, but there's only one main police station, and the card is just a type of ID card that they issue. A lot of people here in town like to do Anime costuming, so seeing someone walking around with, say, a claymore isn't a big deal (yeah, that's also me. Same for the Master Sword, Buster Sword, gunblade, etc.)

Many shops in the UK will not serve people who have helmets on. This is due to thieves wearing motorcycle helmets during robberies to hide their faces. Add to this the possability that your carrying a prop weapon and... listen out for the police sirens! It might not happen but I for one am not going to take the risk! People will see the gun and helmet before they realise it's a costume.

but really, how hard would it be to find a perp running around as Fett? kinda sticks out, kind of a stupid thing like jurrasic park 2 where they was aking how they were gonna find the T-Rex in Los Angeles, it's kind of obvious

I have never had a problem with my blaster in public. I even walked past an officer one time and he just smiled and nodded. Of course, that may be because we have a good ol' open carry law in Arizona. :)

At the EpII opening night I had my MR ANH Solo blaster with me to kinda show it off, and I asked the people working at the theater if I could bring it in and they freaked out. I showed them that the barrel was scealed shut but they did not really care. Once I finish my Multicam Fett, Im going to be taking the blaster rifle with me everywhere since its going to be multicam too.

Great thread full of valuable info. I know it's been awhile since anyone has posted, but I just wanted to share a story. Three TKs and myself decided to do a bit of random trooping the other night. By the time we were ready to go, it was about 9:00pm. So the only thing open in the immediate area was a Target department store that is connected to a local mall. (The rest of the mall was closed by this time) We suited up in the parking lot, and got a lot of stares and cheers. Also got a few cars that drove by multiple times. (One of which was playing the imperial march for our enjoyment.) We went in, and got some smiles and requests for pictures. We did a lap around the store and stopped for a quick look in the star wars section of the toys. We were then approached by a member of the staff, kindly asking our intentions for the evening. We replied that we meant no harm, and were just out for a stroll. She thanked us and as she left, said: "It's ok, they come in peace," into her radio. We had no interactions with the staff beyond that. Once we left, some shopping cart handlers (either teens or early 20s) approached us asking for pics. They thanked us, and mentioned something about "cops." Once we asked them to elaborate, they said a concerned patron had called the police shortly after we had entered. The cops arrived outside, and said they, "had received a call about some Star Wars guys... a Darth Vader, or something..." The employees said they told the police, "First off, it's not Darth Vader, and second, they're fine, don't worry." I got a kick out of that. We never did see the cops so I assume the store personel had turned them away. The crazy part was, we all left our blasters in the car. I had decided not to bring mine, and the TKs had followed suit. We were glad we did. So it just goes to show that even without blasters, the general public can still freak out.

Although we were fully aware what we were getting into going into a department store in goofy costumes, unannounced at 9:00 at night.

I too went on some spur of the moment trooping, it was also evening, buit it was walmart instead of target.Myself (fett) and a friend (dark sandal clad jedi) walked in to many stares and some cheers (no guns as I left my blaster and jet pack and even the rocket gauntlet home) We tooled around checking out the SW selection, sporting goods, electronics etc... We got a murderous look from some douche in sporting goods. After about an hour we decided to head out. On the way out, we were approached by the very greeter that we had walked past and waved to and were told that "we couldn't be in the store dressed like that and would have to leave" We were given no reason why. It seems to me it was probably just HER that was weirded out and decided to flaunt her "authority". Either way it seemed retarded to wait for an hour and when we were leaving anyway to boot us. This was the only incident that I wasn't well received on a random night out. I went to the mall the following weekend and EVERYone loved it, got photos, cheers, and hugs from some rather good looking women. The only time we got rejected was when I thought it'd be funny to get a photo of fett next to a Victoria's secret mannequin, the employeee got very uptight and booted us. But everyone else including the security loved it, especially when I went into the arcade and played some shooting games and DDR.

A while back i was making my EE-3 blaster and pirchased a toy revolver (as close as i could find to look the part) driving home with toy gun and peice of PVC 12 inch long pipe, stoped at lights i piced up the piping and the very obviusly toy gun but piping over barel imagining my soon to be master peice when aparently a 4wd pulled up next to me and reported man driving whilst loading gun, i might add at this point i live in Australia were there is a zero gun tollerance and a driect trip to jail for having a pistol or semi auto weponor even a replica fire arm . so low and behold a few minutes later i was bailed up by the local sqaud every car in the visinity and guns drawn ,an given the full treatment ,HANDS OUT THE WINDOW COPS PULL ME OUT THROUGH THE WINDOW ABSOLUTLLY DRILL THE S--T OUT OF ME and they did nt care why i had the kmart bought toy 4 hours latter relaesed . And every time a cop is driving behind me and thay run my plates . I get pulled over searched and aparenty its gonna keep happening ( great when my daughter is in the car) any way dont make my mistake

Was that at the Crossroads Mall? Or is there another Target attached to a mall here? Those crazy Nebraska people!

I was going to post some insight into costuming in Vegas and the sense behind going in groups and carrying your gun in a bag while in transit to the event, but looks like I got ahead of myself...literally. Didn't realize the thread was this old :)

Phil

Dig the sig Boba Freekk, right to the point ;)

I've never had a problem here in Vegas with the gun either. Just use common sense. And it's best if you're with a group of other costumers, sort of becomes a big package and guns are part of it. If you're by yourself and you need to take it from point A to point B it's best to cover it with something.

At SDCC02 I carried it to and from the con in a large con bag. They peace-tied the guns to our costumes there but that was another heightened security deal. The sec. officer that grabbed me was nice and allowed me to tell him how I'd like it tied so that I could still carry it at the waist properly. Kim wasn't so lucky with her Zam rifle though.

Personally I would go with the suggestion of noting to the organizers or officials that you have a ray gun and that it's part of your costume. Emphasize that it's plastic and could never work. Doesn't matter that it looks lethal, it's still the truth ;)

Bottom line, use common sense. If you're by yourself and carrying a large menacing rifle, especially with a scope!, be prepared to raise some eyebrows.

I do believe if you put an orange tip on it no one will believe it is real.
Here where i live it is illegal to carry any weapon in public without an orange tip on it you know when it is in the open.

The Empire City Garrison marches in the NYC Halloween parade every year. I BELIEVE they carry their guns.

yes we do...and yes we do!

BUT i would NOT suggest trooping your fett...it gets roudy and rough and sometimes people get a bit aggressive in there drunkn frenzys. Alot of us dont even troop it in armor anymore cuz it gets too rough and you can end up with damaged or missing pieces from your armor. fett, in my opinion is too detailed, complicted and expensive to risk trooping it at the NYC halloween parade. but the choice is yours!

EDIT...lord i didnt realize this thread was from 2003!:eek: LOL :lol:well this info may still be helpful for someone,so ill leave it be:D

I made a pretty decent steampunk aviatrix and spent a long time painting my Nerf Mavericks so they'd fit the bill... only to be told I had to pay to shelve them in the coat check. Irony: the entire club was decorated with Nerf guns and other similar props for this sci-fi/futures night! gah!!!! Plenty of other people had real-looking weapons too.

It is unfathomable that something looking like a Maverick could ever fire anything malicious. Luckily, the club night I like is at a different location with much cooler doorstaff and, this year, I'll hide my Boba guns on a sling under my cape just for getting in the door ;)
