Nemrod Holster for TDH Boba Fett display - Progress

So, we managed to pick up a Nemrod holster to go along with our Pulce speargun for the TDH table ( thanks SlaveR5!).

I am still not totally convinced the ribbed strap version of the Nemrod is the exact version seen in the film, but it will certainly do for now.

So we started with this early this afternoon.

The first thing I did was try the fit the Pulce into the holster... It fits! It is tight, but it does fit. The barrel barely fit through the hole in the bottom so I widened it just a bit with a half-round file. One thing I think some people are missing is just how far out the bottom of the holster the pulce barrel should come. From what I have seen, the barrel should come completely out of the bottom of the holster, almost to the point that the knurling shows.

I then realized that the rubber retaining strap for the holster was far too long because the Pulce is pushed so far down into the holster. I added a new snap about 3/4" behind the original and then trimmed the strap. After trimming it sits a lot closer to how the original stap appears to sit.

I then began to cut out the trigger guard area in the back of the holster and spent most of the afternoon on this as I was very afraid of cutting away too much of the holster. However, I cut a LOT more than I expected before I got a look that comes close to the original.

Here is a comparison showing the second to last cut.

And here is the holster with the final cut to the trigger guard area.

After this I tackled the knife slot. I know there is a lot of debate about how much is cut off and how much is left. I don't know any more than anyone else, but I am not in the camp that believes the prop makers would have been concerned about maintaining the integrity of the Nemrod logo and based on the photos I have seen, I believe the front face of the holster is virtually flat. I know I am immediately going to get flak for the poor sanding job, but believe it or not it is on purpose. In the inset photo, you can clearly see the very hasty and poorly finished sanding job on the original prop, which leaves a knife-like triangle in the center of the face. I did my best to mimic this sanding pattern.

So, that is pretty much it. Here is a photo of the final holster, minus the Pulce.

Now I am on the hunt for an original holster with the smooth, built in strap. Anyone want to trade?

Very nice Art! Love the rough sanding work. You can see similar sanding patterns on the bespin guards holsters so I think you are right on the money with that approach.

You're gonna go and scuff up the pretty replica you're gettin, arent'cha ;)

I think you did a fine job Art. I've been leaning toward the same, especially after my talk with kbrosseau some number of weeks/months ago.

From a replica standpoint, I thought it was better to not cut off quite that much. Just in case. If we found more definitive shots later, each member could "finish them off" Same goes for the trigger guard cutout. Better too little, than too much which wouldn't be correctable.

The good news is, these holsters seem so beat all to "the opposite of heaven", that sanding on the new replicas to re-produce the worn look won't hurt a thing

Great job ! (y) (y) Ya Butcher !

WOW...great result!

May I ask how much you spent for the pulce and the NEMROD holster in the end?

I have the MoJo blaster and fettprides holster on the way, but you know me...NOTHING beats the real deal ;)

I'm not a ESB guy, but that looks right on the money to me. On the original, it almost looks like the logo is filled in flush with the raised triangle...could just be that pic though...

Markus, I agree that nothing beats the real deal, but I have to tell you, as much as I like original pieces, getting the original Pulce was something of a letdown after having owned one of Gav's replicas. They are so close, that once I got the real thing, it wasn't as exciting as it usually is because there really isn't that much difference between the two. Don't get me wrong. I wouldn't trade the original for the world, but in all seriousness, Gav's replica is ridiculously good.

While I haven't owned one of FP's holsters, I have a feeling I would think the same about them as I do about Gav's Pulce. The level of quality in some of the replicas that have been put out lately are truly on par with the original pieces.

I can completely understand where you are coming from. I actually started with a much smaller cutout than you made on your replicas, and then shaved a little more... took a photo for comparison, then shaved a little more... took another photo. This literally went on for hours and I was very surprised at just how much material had to be removed before the holster looked like the original, but I feel fairly confident it is close... of course... a photo could surface tomorrow proving me completely wrong, but for now, I am pretty happy with it. I will say, that I was looking at your holsters the whole time and my level of anxiety increased pretty dramatically as I realized I was cutting well beyond the area you did and I just kept telling myself... I hope I am not ruining this piece!

I'm sure that has to be nerve wracking cutting up an original found item...I have a hard enough time bringing myself to weather my MC boots lol.

Cool pics Art! Thanks for doing the leg work. What's funny is I *think* that's my old holster that I sold to SlaveR5 like 3 years ago... small world

It can be a small world indeed.

Just for reference, my initial cut along the back edge of the holster extended down 1 5/8". I can't really say much about the measurements of the cut around the side except to say that you just have to look at photos and make a smooth arcing cut that goes up the side of the holster.

I have refined the sanding a bit, taking the center down to 800 grit then buffing it with a cloth... the part with the sanding marks is 220... thinking of taking it down to about 400... and there is a small triangle at the bottom that probably needs to be taken down to 800... but I am starting to refine the sanding shape to more of what is seen in ESB.

Don't you dare ruin that holster by idealizing it.
It should be worn and scratched up.
You really think the prop makers spent the time to make a perfectly smooth finish?

I'm going to cut mine up, scratch the poop out of it and never think twice about it.

Question though. On my original holster, the bottom is completely covered with the exception of a 1/4" hole. Was yours like that?
Give me a few minutes and I'll post a pic.

Here's a pic.

I'd like to see a pic of the bottom of your finished holster Art.
At least it will give us an idea as to how big the opening should be.

You guys couldn't have started this hog wild accuracy thread when I WAS in the thralls of making a replica possible ?

Chris

Chris;
I was thinking the same thing as I was reading all of this. Don't worry though, I still love my FP. I may have to do some altering now though.

Well guys... I would have been working on this earlier if someone hadn't STOLEN a holster from me... Now I am not one to name names but it starts witno G and ends with ino....

Honestly, I don't think there is ANYTHING wrong with the holsters Chris made. As Chris pointed out, we really can't say definitively where the holsters were cut, both on the back or on the front. I think his leaving a bit of extra material was by far the wisest decision because now everyone can simply trim their own replica to the place they feel comfortable.

Seriously, I spent hours and hours last nice trimming that trigger guard slot again and again, terrified I was taking too much off, but each time not quite feeling that it had the right look until the very end when I went for broke and started slicing up the side more.

Gino, the hole in the bottom of my holster had already been cut, but I needed to round the hole slightly and enlarge it ever so slightly, but honestly, I wouldn't make the hole any larger than needs to be for the head of the barrel to pass through. By doing this and pushing the barrel all the way out (as it should be) the knurling on the back of the barrel catches on the ege of the plastic hole and helps lock the pistol firmly in the holster.

I really expected the pistol to fit loosely in the holster because it is not made for it, but it is a perfect fit!

Honestly, I'm not bent at all. I'm joking with you guys

Jedi.Paramedic - you've got enough left on the holster to alter as Art said, and that was the point ;)

Thanks Art (y) And I think this is great instruction here :)
