My ROTJ Build Thread

So I figured I would make a build thread so I could utilize you guys advice and help. I didn't want to start the thread till I was a little closer to assembly.

Here's what I have/have ordered.

Armor - RKD (at painter should have early October)

Soft parts - Arkady

Helmet - Animefan Premium (at painter should have early October)

Boots - MOW

Jetpack - MOW (at painter should have in coming weeks)

Jetpack Harness - BBF

Braids / Girthbelt - Woodsman (real hair and on order)

Ammo Belt - Bobamaker

Servo (jc)

Metal parts, lighted beacon etc (Dakota)

Shin tools (Paterson)

Voice Synth Pro / Aker (been practicing )

EE3 ( Hyperfirm )

So I wanted to get done what I could. I'm excited to get this thing done for a Disney Halloween cruise. My only obstacle to being done may be the painter (sleepalot / Mikes Workshop on FB). He has been great and real responsive and said he would make the date for me.

I'll post pics of what I can get done and maybe get advice from you guys. I have been scanning these threads and builds like a hawk and seeing what you guys recommend. I have a level 3 Stormtrooper so attention to detail is paramount to me as it is to many of you.

So my armor should be arriving soon so I worked on how to attach the Wookie Braids. There really is no uniform way that I see everyone doing it so I just did what seemed best to me. I used mini eyelets (1/8") and jewelry bead string to attach them. They are on good and the finish looks professional. They also can be removed and put back on pretty easily.

Here are some photos:

So I got around to working on the flak today. I decided to take a page from Deathproof and go with an inside pocket for the chest lights. I added Velcro to close and an eyelet to pull the wire thru.

I am not liking using magnets for the armor. When the flak is folded or taken off the sometimes stick to one another. May switch to snaps or studs

So I removed the first set of magnets that seemed too strong and were sticking to each other when laying the flak down. The I installed a new set that were less strong and no matter what I just don't feel like magnets would satisfy me.

So for the second time I changed my attachment method. So I tore all the second set of magnets off (thank god for E6000) with not even a scratch.

I made snaps with scrap pieces of ABS and attached them to the armor.

Then while I was at it I added an eyelet so I can put the Aker in the front pocket with my iPhone / Voice Synth.

So here's a progress shot minus the gauntlets and Jetpack.

nice looking pocket for light battery. I was thinking of doing this as well. Just have not gotten to it. I like your set up.

So far so good man!

I would grab some more photos in different light so we can see how the costume changes. A few things that catch my eye:

  • I know you put an eyelet in for the braids, but it looks like they are too far to the shoulder side, almost looking like the shoulder is what is keeping them up. They should help fill the gap between the shoulder and the collar.
  • Your chest and ab pieces could come closer together to decrease the space to the center diamond. You may need to take in the bottom of the vest for this. This is normal.
  • The girth belt seems a bit scattered/thin....probably just the way it was put on. We shouldn't see through to the flightsuit.
  • You may want to weather the vest a tad more.

How are you liking having the aker in your front pocket? Can the wire reach all the way?

Keep it up!!

Thanks for the feedback.

1. I can easily move up the braids would only take a few minutes. The reference photo I had has them right above that shoulder bell. My photo doesn't show them well but I'll play with that and maybe move them up.

2. Once again, I used one of the reference photos and they weren't as tight. I did however see another photo where they were closer as you described.

3. Girth belt is just badly adjusted. Also, the flak is weathered well I think the flash in the photo my wife took made it shine more.

I do like the Aker in the front pocket. My bigger issue is the interference squeaking sound that's happens. Still working on that.
