Mounting Jetpack Hooks on MOW pack

01Hawk

Active Hunter
There are a lot of build threads to go thru but was wanting to see if anyone could throw some pics of the back side of there packs here. I have my harness almost all together and have an idea where I want to put the hardware- just want to see if there is something I may be missing. I am using a BigDane harness and FMF hooks. Thanks!

I have the same set up. I'd like to see some pics too. It seems pretty straight forward, but, wouldn't hurt to see how other folks have done it.

Just did this the other day...had to create my own aluminum backing plates for the bottom clips. There wasn't enough room to use FMF's plates.

That looks very similar to how I have mine mocked up.. I was trying to position the metal part of my harness high up on my back like in my reference pics. I am 5'11". The lower horizontal bar is hidden behind my back plate ( BobaMaker ) when I have it positioned like that. I had to drop the metal part down a good bit to just outside the back armor and should be able to slip it in the lower clips.

Thanks for the pic!

BTW, I went through quite a bit of experimentation in deciding where to mount the upper hooks, what with slightly different strap lengths, slightly different strap mount points on the harness shoulders, slightly different shoulder heights, etc. Since the jet pack mostly rests on the lower crossbar, the upper hooks really just serve to hold the jet pack tight against your back (at least for mine). I have a mannequin that I was able to use to get the position mostly correct (thankfully I didn't need to don it all and measure myself in the mirror each time!!) but still needed to make a slight adjustment in the strap length after mounting the hooks to the pack (just to prepare you, you may need to fiddle with this a bit).

I had my straps pinned down and have very little poking out of the back side of the armor ( mostly just the d ring) . Your upper hooks are lower than where I anticipated putting mine dv8r .. Do you have a lot of strap showing ?

Yes, probably a bit more than I should have, definitely more than the MOM gallery shots.

The extra does give a bit more leeway when getting the jet pack on though...

I got the movie accurate clips from the member here, they just aren't in the picture.
I have a '65 seat belt for my bottom belt.

This gears towards my MOW JP harness vest and his recommendations that go with using it.

I agree with level3. It's also important to remember that people have different torso heights so it will also vary depending on your size. You want the harness to rest between your shoulders and in the small of your back. I found this to be more comfortable. I originally had it higher which put a lot of stress on my shoulders.

Once you find a comfortable fit for the harness you need to mark the holes in the vest. First put the vest on as best you can and have someone mark the holes for the metal bar. Then, remove the vest and harness and put on just the vest and back plate. Putting the back plate on, get someone to mark the holes for the straps, knowing that they only should stick out a few cm. You could do this while having the harness on, but I found this made a better mark as the metal bar puffs out the vest unless the bar holes are cut.

Since the weight of the jetpack is primarily taken by the bar that was to be my starting point. After cutting the holes for both the bar and straps, I put the vest and backplate on, putting the bar and straps in their proper places (the metal bar should be between the bottom gap in the backplate). Not worried about strap length just yet, this can always be changed.

You need lots of help for this part. Get someone to put your jetpack and position it along your harness. Most images of the jet packs I've seen have the bottom hooks flush with the bottom of the jetpack so I used that as a reference. Be aware of how high the rocket is going to be (you don't want it over your head). For me, the bottom hooks worked fine sitting flush on the bottom, so I drilled them in. Then, again, placing the jetpack on the bar (with help) you mark the locations for the upper hooks. Using a mirror, help your squire position and mark the distance your jetpack will be from your back.

Once marked, drill in the upper hooks, shorten or lengthen straps as necessary, and thank your squire :)

It's definitely a lengthy process and the hardest part to get fitted right for the costume. If it doesn't fit right for you, you will get sore much easier, so make sure the harness is comfortable!!

Wow thanks DeathProof ! That is an excellent write up. I did drill mine and have all my straps positioned - I just have to get someone to help get me dressed again to see how it all look. My helper spent a few hours helping me line up everything. The biggest mistake I made in the early stages of trying to fit it all up was that I had the metal part of the up way too high. Now it rests lower and gets the highest point of the pack body even with the upper part of the back plate. Anxious to try it on , hopefully tomorrow.
