Gotta be good for something...

I got the genius idea (well, I think it is) to build Mando armor out of campaign signs. They're fairly sturdy and as long as I continue to drive around at 2am they're free.

I've found that they shape well in the oven, or in boiling water (haven't tried a heat gun yet, but soon) and they're nice to work with. The only problem is that they are corrugated plastic, and when they are shaped, you can clearly see the vertical lines of the inner cell.

I figured that I could put a layer of Bondo over everything, or some other sort of overlay...does anyone have suggestions?

P.S. I'm new here, and I apologize if I posted this in the wrong area...it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Hey, what a smashing idea! Oh, speaking of smashing, I hope your are not one of the mailbox smashers, driving around at 2 am.

Do you deliver newspapers?

Welcome to the family!

I'm new too! welcome.

arent the campaign signs made of sintra or something similiar?
if so - go for it .... Although I may keep the ones with Sen Palin's pic on it though ;P

I was just thinking abt re-inforcing sintra myself - I wsa gonna try bondo as I would hate the sticky mess of FG+resin.

Yes... I was hoping for Sintra (knocking out two questions with one reply, or as we say...killing two droids with one shot) but the signs are corrugated plastic. It's essentially like plastic cardboard. It has a distressing tendency to fold along the vertical inner supports, so you have to be careful. And I have no idea what "For Sale" signs are made of. I'll try pinching one and seeing what it does! ;p

Heh, no... I don't smash mailboxes. Only jerks do that, and I'm only midly obnoxious...I have not attained full jerk status. And sadly, I don't have any good excuse for staying up late. I just have lots of time starting after 9 PM,0 and why waste it sleeping? However, I know that my neighbors will have gone to bed at 11.

I come from the dark side of the yard!!! XD

Quick update...

I just heated the armor up and shaped it easy enough. I used my oven set to 250 (+ - 50 degrees... I have the fail oven) The plastic is holding the shape as well as I thought it would. Unfortunately, the layer on the top seems to repel spray paint, which is sad because I was going to spray primer on these things and see if it covered up the lines. Oh well, guess I'll just Bondo the **** out of it as per origional plan.

Well I love the idea. I was not at all implying that you are a smasher. I used to drive around at 2 am, for years and have great memories. But I remember the smashed mailboxes and it was supposed to be funny.

This is such a great idea! I got your pm but have been quite busy.
Again, welcome! I think you will start a trend with the signs. Keep us posted with your progess!

:cheers
