Flight suit and gloves dying methods

Gave it alot of thought, and decided to dye my tan flight suit and gloves black. I did some searching around on the sight, and I found alot of info on colors and stuff, but not really anything on common places to find the dyes, or methods to do it. I know some of you have alot of experience in dying cloth, so I'm hoping to get some good tips. Here's a picture of my wife wearing my scratchbuilt helmet and my nomex flight suit and gloves.

I want the cloth to either be black or dark grey when I'm done with it.

you can check out the Rit Dye website for information about how and what type of material will take the dye. judging by the size of the flightsuit, you will need 2 bottles of Rit black for a deep color. throw that bad boy in the washing machine, let it fill up with hot water and aggitate with the dye mixed in and then add your suit (should get it wet first before you put it into the machine, let it sit for about 25 minutes and then continue the regular cycle. remove and wash again or rinse until the water runs clear, hang dry. you can just go down to your local "Wally World" (Walmart) or most drug stores and look in the detergent isle and buy the black Rit there for a couple of bucks. hope this helps. post a picture when your done bro.

good luck.

Hi SamLynn,
I have not dyed anything myself yet, but I have also heard great things about the dye you can purchase at Dharma Trading. Here is a link. http://www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/
I have also been given tips about adding 1 cup of salt to that first water only wash you will do after the dying. It is supposed to set the color. Always wash in Cold water and I would recommend only gentle cycle with as little agitation as needed. If it is not that dirty, run a minimal gentle cycle, in cold water. And always wash it seperately, unless you have something else that is completely black, as the color can fade on other clothes. The biggest concern with black dye is fading, but if a dark grey is ok, then you should be ok if it fades a bit.

Hope this helps as well. The bucket looks great! Good luck with your costume!

If you really want it black, you are honestly better off just buying a new jumpsuit. Dyeing it will depend on the material. If it's 100% cotton or close to it, it can probably be dyed just fine with RIT Dyes. If not, you will probably have to go with something from Dharma Trading like Debbi suggested.
