ESB Fett Build. Take 2!

Hello TDH!

Dave here from Melbourne. I started building my Fett in 2011. Joined the TDH, and started buying and building all the different parts.

Unfortunately I lost my steam with the build because all the parts started taking a really, really long time to arrive.Which I know is part and parcel of a Fett build, but so many things happened in my life that needed my attention, album recordings, touring, and of course, kids! However my goal has always been to get my Fett done for my 40th. That seemed a lot longer away back in 2011, but now in 2017, it's only 3 years away, and I'm freaking out!

So I got my Fett gear out of storage, and immediately feel overwhelmed. But I know how great this community is, and with your advice and help, I'm sure by the time my 40th rolls around in 2020, I'll have a ESB Fett to be proud of.

SO, thats the back story, lets get into some initial questions and photos:

Here are all my parts in their current state:

The first question I have about my build is the Helmet. It's a Fett Pride GMH. I had a look for a build thread, but couldn't find one, I found a great Youtube series on how to paint a ESB lid, however, the buckets used in the series are different to mine, can anyone who has worked on the GMH point me in the direction of a good build thread? cheers!

Dave

Can't keep a good fett down :)

ThanksDanzo!

I used the search to try and find a ESB paint up on the GMH, and haven't found one yet, anyone got a better idea?

Also, I have some questions about the parts that came with my GMH.

The range finder is a complete cast, and I thought it would come with the see through part, how do I make that part look clear? Is it even possible? Or do I need to buy a rangefind kit from someone else, has anyone put one of these together before?

Also, whats the deal with this ear piece, do I just dremel/sand this piece off on the bottom?

Unfortunately for ESB, you will be covering up all that nice PP2 damage and creating some new damage.

I am getting ready to ship a new GMH to Melbourne in a week or so. I will see if the fellow member there would be willing to ship you a spare range finder kit if I put it in his box. PM me for details.

Is that rangefinder all one piece?

Dremel off that bit on the bottom and contact @Wasteland or @Skyfire about getting a new rangefinder topper.

sweet man,will do!

When in doubt just google what your looking for and you will find a TDH thread.

Here are are the first 3 I found.

Plus my friend @Raizo will be joining your journey very shortly when I get a GMH to him.

thanks man, these threads will definitely help!

This is a good source for painting a helmet

Thanks Man, yeah I've actually been watching this series over the past week! it's a great recoruse, however, some of the steps I need clarification on:

Do I need to wash my helmet as it's resin?

How do I attach the ears so that I can one day install a servo kit?

What are the exact spots on the GMH that needs to be filled with bondo to make it ESB?

Yes, wash your resin with a mild soap. For your ears, I used a magnet to stick the ear cap to the helmet.

That youtube video shows all the scratches ESB has, so fill in any voids that aren't shown in the youtube video.

Maybe someone who is more familiar with GMH can also comment on overall dimensions and shape, but from the pics it looks like its the same as ESB minus the scratches.

Awesome man, thanks for the tips!!!! Also, I really want to get started on the bucket before I have my paints, bondo ect, with the resin helmet, it's cool to go ahead and cut out the visor yeah? I'd assume once that's cut out, it will be easier to work with?

For the RF Ear cap, small rare earth magnets do wanders, the RF ear can use a US sized counter sunk #4 at the top and #6 at the bottom. There are a few nice threads here on how to do the ears.

On your GMH you have alignment holes on the helmet to be drilled out. Some of FP's ears had hex holes on the back side of them for nuts to be glued in place. If you don't have those, after drilling out the alignment holes on the helmet, tape/clamp or even temp hot glue the ears in perfect alignment. Then use the same drill bit you used to drill out the helmet alignment holes, but just use the bit by hand from the inside out. Give it a few nice spins against the back of the ears, It should leave a nice center dimple. Remove ears from helmet and mark those dimples well. Use a dremel with a cone grinding stone or similar to gently grind a indent that will fit a US #6 or metric equivalent screw head. You will then use superglue and baking soda to glue the screws heads in place in those dimples, they cure rock hard and you now have studs. Test fit, mark Amy extra screw length, remove ear, spin a nut all the way down the stud and the use a cut off wheel to cut the extra length. When your done and spin the nut off to clean up the threads from cutting. If your final ear alignment is off, just slightly enlarge the helmet holes to give yourself a little bit of adjustment.

Ok, so I got 2 hours to myself this arvo, so I thought lets get back to the Fett. I washed the bucket:

Got out the old dusty Dremmel, marked out the visor, and cut that sucker out!

IMG_3480_zps36sxzhv1.jpg

I then sanded it back a bit to get the edges smooth

IMG_3482_zps3mymc9bg.jpg

But I did stuff up the very edge of the visor hole, what should I use to fix this? It's a resin GMH, so what kind of bog would work best?

Then I decided to reward myself with a beer! ha ha ha

Hey guys, can anyone show me exactly on the GMH where I have to fill with body filler to make it ESB accurate? I'd hate to fill in a scratch/dent thats meant to be there! I've searched on the forum but I can't see anything, please help. Also, can I use Primer Filler on the resin GMH or do I have to use body filler?

All the scratches should be filled, because the GMH is a descendant of the Pre-Pro #2 helmet. For the ESB scratches check out the end of the first post of this thread ==> http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/showthread.php?t=41899.

Thanks Raf!!! I'll fill all those spots except the ones marked in the photo. There is a scratch on the top of the dome as well, I'm assuming that needs to be smoothed out yeah? Cos the photo only shows the front of the bucket.

Also, does anyone know if the T-Visor.com is the only place to order a T-Visor? Cos I emailed them and haven't heard anything back ;( And I don't know which one to order for a GMH

I think people would agree they're the best. I've had no issue ordering straight from their website, they have detailed measurements up there and you can always trim the visor if it's too big.
