So I've been sitting on Sidewinders ESB kit for awhile and I finally want to start building it. I've done the prep work filling up air bubbles, etc but I'm wondering: what color should I use for the base coat? Is it silver or bronze?

Sorry if this has been asked before but I couldn't find anything in the search feature.

I'd use something darker and then work up to some gun metal highlight ighting and weathering. I might even consider some ink washes to assist in the weathering process.

Airbrushing us always going to yield the best results. Ive seen a few different ways of painting up. Mostly starting with gun metal and black & brown washing for weathering as intwenothor said. Ive seen a gun metal painted over with a dark dark gray, giving it a sun beaten black look as well.

Thanks so much! Sounds like I'm going to go that route. On the original Webley (or the prop for the movie): was there any areas where bronze was exposed? The guns base was bronze right?

The right grip is brass. As far as the original prop being brass, I cant speak to that, but I dobt think so. I know they have chrome webleys, but im not sure they used one. If they did, they definitely weathered her up dark. Check the gallery photos for reference pics.

i used a krylon ultra flat black base, then misted with some rusto metallic bronze and tied it together with testors dullcoat. gives it that grungy brownish black look. actually turned out pretty nice color wise but that dullcoat really dulls it down. for the grip i used krylon brilliant gold, super shiny, dirtied it up with some brake dust then a little dullcoat to tone it down and lock in the grime. took some color experimenting but im more than satisfied with the outcome thus far. still have the complete weathering to do with the airbrush and then a final semi gloss coat to bring back a little of that metal reflectiveness to it as seen in the reference pics. good luck!
