Electronics Help

First and foremost thank you again. I sincerely hope I'm not frustrating you (or anyone reading this thread) overly. I really do appreciate the help.

I found another thread which is covering the same setup: http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/f20/what-you-guys-using-voice-changer-49732/

The Y splitter recommend here is this one:
iPhone 1/8 inch electret condenser microphone and headphone adapter - 3.5mm 4 conductor TRRS Male to 3.5mm TRS Jacks

It appears to have the dedicated mic hookup and headset/speaker hook up. I can't quite tell from the pictures if the plug end has three stripes or two. Do you think this one will work?

The splitter you linked clearly has the three lines. For simple understanding purposes why the three lines are needed is the separation of audio signals...one does mic, two are for audio (stereo sound has a separate audio for right and left sides).

Hmm, I've had exactly the same problems with the Voice Synth (with the KV connector too), but it's very temperamental. Just went to make a video and the echo/feedback is a lot less than it was at the convention. Possibly to do with the location since my garage is pretty quiet. I did take the gain out completely and left the in-app volume at 50% while cranking the Aker as high as it would go. One question for everyone who uses this setup; can you still hear your regular voice under the helmet from the outside? For testing purposes, I wore the helmet but on the camera I could still hear me mumbling from inside as it came out the amp. My friend at the con could also hear the two voices and said it was offputting.

Simply put it's difficult to hear you with the helmet on if you are in full battle rattle. That's why many get the aker.

In regards to the feedback issue it could be due to poor shielding on the cables...that's why I said the aker headset that came with the speaker is essentially junk.

To be fair I did indeed purchase the under ear mic/headset that Crumdum recommended. It is a very nice set up and only runs $9 on Amazon. My only issue with it is that it has its own volume control. My problem is feedback. I intend to use this nicer headset but I'm trying to use the basic headset that came with the Aker for two reasons. The other thread I mentioned earlier (http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/f20/what-you-guys-using-voice-changer-49732/) has a video of DeathProof using the headset that came with the Aker and there is no feedback, so in theory, the same set up should work one would think, and two, if I can get the set up working with the less complicated Aker headset then I have something to fall back on if I can't get the more complicated headset working. The more complicated headset (the $9 one) again has volume too, so if I use it, I have set the volume on it, set the volume on the Aker, and set the volume on the iPhone. Now to be fair, this is what Crumdum is using and I have no reason to doubt his recommendation. I ordered the higher end y splitter recommended by DesthProof and seconded by Crumdum earlier today. I'm hoping that it will work with at least one of the headsets. If it does, I'll post a video with all settings, volume levels for each device that has volume, etc.

The volume is for the headphone part not the microphone.....a heads up the silver button near the volume control will pickup any incoming call on your iphone.

Are there any decent mic-only options for the budget inclined out there?

I linked a headset with a flexible mic in this thread. It's small, does not take up any helmet space (it loops under the bottom/back of your head) and would allow you to receive phone calls easily while trooping. It's also only 9$ with shipping.

I'm looking for a mic only option though that I can attach to the helmet. I already have a hearing aid system installed in my helmet that uses headphones.

As a note, the previous set up I mentioned where I planned to record the feedback echo only to find it was working perfectly; I left the system running, left the room and came back a couple hours later to find the feedback had returned. Absolutely nothing had changed in the setup, the location or even the power.

Not to hijack this thread much, but I've been contemplating changing my microphone as well. So far my aker mic hasn't crapped out on me, but the male to male cable has which makes me think it's only a matter of time. I would like to go for a Bluetooth option so I don't have a cable running down my sweaty body (pardon the imagery).

You could just plug this into the aker to make it receive the Bluetooth signal: ELEGIANT Portable 3.5 mm USB Bluetooth Music Audio Stereo Streaming Receiver Adapter Fit for Car AUX in Home Mp3 Speaker Iphone White: Amazon.ca: Home & Kitchen

What I would be looking for is a cheap mic only Bluetooth headset with an adjustable boom mic. I prefer the boom mic so I can bend it right next to my mouth. I can speak softly so no one hears my voice from inside the helmet and the aker picks it all up.

I did see this which looked like a good wired alternative: TTX Tech Ear Hook Headset (MC-PC-540) - Black : Computer Headsets - Best Buy Canada

I suppose i could add a transmitter dongle to that, but that's just getting to be too much. Lol.

I looked and looked and looked for a bluetooth microphone option similar to what you were describing. Simply put, I couldn't find one that wasn't crazy expensive. The cheaper options were all bluetooth headsets which are set for phone calls and not normal audio transmitting.

So....I may have found a solution to the bluetooth setup.

After hours (no joke) of searching:
Wireless Blurtooth Stereo Headset Earhook Over Head Speaker Handsfree Microphone | eBay

Hook that up with this receiver to the aker amp:
ELEGIANT Portable 3.5 mm USB Bluetooth Music Audio Stereo Streaming Receiver Adapter Fit for Car AUX in Home Mp3 Speaker Iphone Black: Amazon.ca: Home & Kitchen

Cheap solution! Let's see if it works. I have no idea how bluetooth really works, or how that headset is going to connect to the receiver....but it will be a learning experience.

Glad to hear it works!!

To follow up on my shameful hi-jack. The setup I just posted is not going to work. What will work is this:

Memorex Wireless Headset Mic - TK Products, LLC

It's straight from the guy that made the iComm. Take your Aker mic, plug it into the transmitter, and then plug the receiver into your amp. I plan on putting this into my front thigh pouch so that my voice is coming from the front, and not the side.

Thanks for the link. Going to a con this Sunday using the regular wired Aker for the first time. The first time I took the costume for a spin, I was in and out of the helmet due to the heat, and I'm sure this Sunday is going to be no cooler, so I'll see how I fare struggling to disconnect the mic every time I want to remove my helmet (I installed my mic permanently in the helmet). No doubt I'll end up buying one of the wireless kits.

Another option to a wireless setup may be a throat mic. Throwing that out there.
