DVH Gauntlet scratch build! (2017 updates!)

Did a little more work on these today. I made the base for the gauntlet top from foam, carved and sanded to shape. I then coated it with bondo and stuck the top portion onto it. It still needs some fine tuning and tweaking, such as the outer side still caves in a bit too much so i need to fix that, and of course the standard smoothing and final shaping. But overall this is a very close match to the cervantes gauntlets and im pretty happy with it so far.

Update for the right gauntlet!:

Did some tweaking to the shapes. This is almost at the point where i can make a dump mold of this. ( a mold that only needs to yield one casting to use to further fine tune the design)

Thanks a lot for walking through your process. It is worth gold to a new guy like me. Oh, and it is coming together very nicely, but that is obvious.

Hopefully you consider making these available to the many members here, Lou. If so, would you try vac-forming them, fiberglassing them, or slush casting them?

Thats the plan :) I ultimately want to do them ABS Vac'ed, but until my proper shop is set up, i dont have the space for the Vac table. Although i was considering making a small one just for gauntlets for now. One issue is going to be getting the correct ABS. From what ive found, ordering ABS that is smooth on both sides (as opposed to the pincell on one side) is special order and you have to order like $2,000 worth for them to make it/ship it. Not that i wouldnt use it, as i have plans to make other Non-Fett related stuff as well, but its alot o cash.

Styrene (HIPS) is an option also, but im not a huge fan of that as it will likely crack at some point due to putting them on and taking them off.

All that said, i will likely do them in glass first, maybe gather funds from those to help buy the ABS, perhaps do a few sets in styrene (HIPS)[ perhaps a budget/display version?] and then offer the ABS vac'ed ones a little later on once i have the plastic thing sorted.

haha thank Jesuit! :cheers

Most of it is done with the dremel and palm sander so its not THAT bad..aside from the dust, but i have a mask for that and its in the shop so :D . Also the base of the right gauntlet is foam with just a layer of bondo on it, so its not ALL bondo :)

Ok so did a little more on this today and yesterday. Im thinking this is super close to the best im gonna get it. If i soften some of the creases it may be good to use as the actual master, rather than making a dump mold taking a cast and fine tuning it, and then making another production mold. Id just need to fill all the smaller little holes/imperfections. Anywho here is the progress:

Here they are primered yet again with the reference pics hanging in the background. I think i got this one pretty close :)

Ok i added some depth to the bottom of this just to be sure when they are cast, it will be even, so i have this now...

Did more cleanup on the left one as well. There are a couple more tweaks i want to do before putting it in rubber though. The right one however, is pretty much as far as i can go at this point with the styrene/bondo aspect of the build. So it is now primed again. Next i will make a dump mold on it and then fine tune, then make a new mold to cast the final piece.

Thanks man! :D

Well, technically to do what im doing will end up costing about the same as, or a touch more than buying a set of gauntlets when all said and done. However if i was to sell a couple of sets i can recoup my costs fairly easily, Its also a great feeling to be trooping something i made from scratch myself. So i can truly say, i made the gauntlets jetpack and helmet i will be trooping :)

I also will have the ability to cast replacements and do other versions all based off of these.

The shape really does look close to the Cervantes gaunts. Good job! Thanks for sharing pics of the mold making process.

Thanks man :) im pretty happy with them.

I know the left one is going to need to be altered for ROTJ as it is actually a little different..mainly on the Flamer side. The esb has a pretty consistent edge from front to back..pretty much going straight back, the ROTJ ones taper outward so the edge is wider at the rear . The ROTJ is also very sharply detailed and believed it may be fiberglass. So after i make the dump mold for the left one i will cast 3 (esb, rotj, jango) from it and go to work on them to get them to their respective versions :)
