Deriak's build

indeed lol.thank man..hope you get your place done soon!

Yea i mean alot of folks use the testors dullcoat spray so im sure its fine, i just chose to use the humbrol as i had bought it with some paints and was happy with it. By all means what i do isnt the end all lol. Im really kinda low on the totem poll still lol

OK, Finally moved into my house and it actually is starting to look like my own. Just waiting for the garage floor sealer to dry so I can rearrange my tools and work areas. This weekend I got one last bit of track lighting to install in the kitchen. Then I have to do an oil pump, water pump, t-belt, drive belts, and tension pulleys on my wife's Xterra. Once thats done I will be back on track with Boba.

In the mean time I got a friend who graduated from SCAD with a fasion degree. She does great tailoring work so in exchange for automotive work, she will be doing my soft parts.
Today I plan on going to Hobby Lobby and picking up fabric. I just want to be clear on a few things...

The Flak jacket is Tackle Twill correct?
The flight suit is regular Twill? and should I get off white or kakie color fabric?

Other than that, got it covered.

Pictures and more updates to come

Thanks everyone.

Ok. some researching happened. Flight suit im looking for is a very light gray twill... I couldn't find any light gray, only dark gray at Hobby Lobby. Going to try a different store today. I may end up getting Offwhite color twill and just dye it, trying to avoid that route, but we will see.

Having some issues searching for flak jacket fabric. Looking for Tackle twill or Pre-Poly twill is difficult. Hobby Lobby doesn't have anything like that. Still looking of that.

I need my chest and shoulder decal..
Is there someone on the forums that prints these out to sell or is it better to hand paint them on? Or stencil? My free hand is not very good.

Need some help with Tackle Twill. Where are you guys buying the fabric at? Non of my local fabric stores carry Tackle Twill, and when I explain to them what it is, they just point me into the Polyester fabric, which is fine, but I don't like how thin it is.

I can order a swatch to see if I like it. I think I should do White and weather it to darken it up.

if you guys have a place you order your's from, please point me in the right direction. Also, if you have a picture of what it looks like when you order it, would be even better.

Need some help guys, thanks.

Time for New Year's update. So I was able to spray the back plate green earlier this week. Came out a bit rough after it dried.. not sure if trash got on it before it dried all the way or my paint/air mix was off. I will give it a light sand with 800 when I get ready to throw the clear on it.

Then today, I peeled the masking off. I must say, I need more practice with the liquid masking. I don't think I will use it for details on my helmet. Maybe for larger areas but will definitly have to go back and use a fine point brush if I want the details. This is just the masking pulled off. I am going to go back and add more scratches and touch up spots that are really off.

Got my Tackle Twill fabric in the other day also. Progress!

What are you using to apply the mask? You should use something very small that's NOT a brush. Alot of us use toothpicks or something similar. That way you'll have alot less detail to touch up with a brush.

hmm.. toothpicks is a good idea. I am using just a normal artist brush. I will try the tooth pick method on the COD piece.

I have been doing a little something every day. So instead of just showing each layer as I go, I figure I would just do one after a large part is finished. Looking at everyone else's build is getting me motivated to finish mine also. I believe I ordered the wrong paint for my shoulders and knees according to the Humbrol paint up that was posted up recently. I think I will go with that instead because it turned out amazing.

I tried the tooth pick method. It did not give me the thinness I wanted in some of the scratches when using Masking Fluid, BUT I can get a much better scratch using the toothpick by painting the scratches instead. Still some touching up to do, but here is the final green coat and all the masking pulled away. Still gotta weather it and get those fine details in.. OF course this is not screen perfect, but I am trying to get as close as I can without pulling my hair out.

And here is the collar piece.

Open to criticism.

Looks good man! The weathering will really bring it to life. I wouldn't be too hard on yourself for not getting all the scratches...I know I won't be able to. I think I'd go nuts trying to get them all.

There are also brushes like these that i've had some success with (again, not for masking fluid, but for scratches): http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/superfine-microbrush-applicators-421180/

You can also take a compass point and scratch away the paint layer - works REALLY well. The toothpick seems to work best for masking fluid, just takes some practice...and time :)

Keep it up!

Hey that looks pretty good man.

The toothpick thing does have a little bit of a learning curve to it. I also switch them out frequently and try to pour very little masking fluid at a time in the little cup/dish thingy i use so i can get the most out of it. As soon as it starts to thicken..you start to not be able to get those fine lines, as you may have encountered, so i wipe out the dish put another couple of drops in the dish, and get another toothpick. Takes a little longer but it gives me better results.

Thanks DeathProof. I need to go to hobby lobby this weekend anyways to pick up some glass containers for paint. I bought some plastic ones, but the plastic can't withstand the paint thinner and deform them.

DVH, yea, definitly a learning curver here. Still learning. I made the mistake of using a differnt thinner "mineral spirits" for my paint because it was free and thought I would try it out. It either thinned it too much or it didn't lay down evenly. I went back to my original thinner "regular paint thinner" and just looks so much better.

I just ran out of my humbrol enamel thinner and was going to buy mineral spirits (white spirit) to thin with. You're saying it doesn't work. So you are just using plain old paint thinner? Is that what it is labelled?

Paint thinner and mineral spirits are usually the same thing. You have to look very closely at the labels.

Your paintwork looks really good by the way. The layering method can be very tricky to get the hang of.

Thanks. I didn't mean that it didn't work. I meant that it looked different than my other parts when I used Mineral Spirits (MS) instead of the Lacquer Thinner (Lac) that I started using from the beginning. I used the same amount 1:1 as I did the Lac but it just looked thinner and not the same shade. I am sure if I played around with it a bit that I could get the same results but after I ran into this issue, I figured it would be a good idea to stick to the same procedure and products throughout the rest of my build.

I did crap load of research before I decided to purchase the items I went with. Although, I am not 100% happy with my airbrush, It still does the job and I am ok with that for now. Later I will upgrade. This video really helped me choose how to mix my paint and what to expect when mixing. I asked my wife while she was at Hobby Lobby to grab me some thinner and she got me MS which I was ok until I watched this video. Then I went out to Home Depot and got some Lac thinner. I now use the MS to clean my brushes and containers and the Lac for my mixing of paint.

well you just taught me something lol. Ive been using mineral spirits with no issues...however, that video shows some very interesting characteristics of using the Lacquer thinner. Id guess it was for lacquer paints which is why i have walked right past it in the past. But this is very interesting. I may give it a try. I have used humrol and testors thinners as well with no issues, which i guess is like his middle selection there. Very interesting stuff. thanks for linking that video.

PS if anyone is interested i found a US seller for humbrol maskol masking fluid here:
