DeathProof's ROTJ Fett: BH-32794

Thanks guys! Yeah, at least with the bucket I'll have stencils. Very happy with how things are turning out. I don't think I could ever get the same results with spray paint.

I figure it doesn't hurt to have extra support, SO GO get some paint and SLAP it on that BUCKET!

lol...need to get my bucket first ;)

I'm done the paint job - will take some pics later. As I type, I'm installing the smoke machine.

Jetpack is almost done - I can see the finish line.

Today I spent time installing the smoke machine. I took a small corner brace and hot glued it into the body of the jetpack, then used industrial velcro to secure it. I used velcro on the 5s Lipo battery as well and connected the active armor setup for the beacon light.

I also tried to create an enclosure for the backplate. For some reason, the backplate of the jetpack was crazy large compared to the opening, so I had to use my dremel and trim it down. I then took small magnets and hot glued them to the backplate. Lined up where I would put the magnets on the pack itself and trimmed halfway down. Because of the thickness of the magnets, I had to be careful about how far down I was going to go. I hot glued the magnets to the pack. For some reason, it does not close properly and I have to figure that out. I might change out the puck magnets for magnetic strips. I want to avoid the screw method as I will need to have easy access to the smoke machine. How do you close your jetpack up? Hell, velcro would probably work better than what I have. (Actually....I might go do that now... :) )

Lastly, my thrusters are currently just jammed into the slots. they seem to be quite snug, but I think. a good little nudge on something might knock them off. Based on what you see inside, any thoughts on how to secure the thrusters temporarily? I can glue them, and that's fine, but I'd rather not for storage purposes.

I still need to:

1) Clear coat
2) Figure out thrusters
3) Fix enclosure system
4) Touch up the colour on the exhaust vent....ugly yellow...yuck. Needs another few coats of grime :)
5) Install hooks and clips - but I don't think this can be done until I have my armor. Backplate armor creates placement of harness straps. Harness straps creates placement of hooks - correct?
6) I'm gonna grab the bottom greeblies off Lou. I will then create an additional hole for the smoke machine cables to come out. These get connected to the ammo belt.

Here are some pics of what I worked on today :)

Took my drill to my ammo belt this evening and installed the servo for the smoke machine. The knob comes out just enough that I can turn it with my fingers - so it's got a nice low profile and isn't distracting. I do need to change that yellow though :) The wire runs along the inside of my ammo belt and will connect with the two wires that will leave the jetpack through one of the greeblies I will install later.

Hurray for functional pouches! :)

Jetpack Smoke Test Video

Ok guys and gals! Here is the jetpack smoke machine video that I've been wanting to make for quite some time :)

The smoke machine is from MrRCSound: http://test.mrrcsound.com/purchase
(By the looks of it, he's in the process of making a V2 of the unit. Just email him and let him know what you're looking for)

The smoke machines were originally designed for RC planes, but with a little tweaking, Andrew was able to make this work for the jetpack. I think it's a GREAT alternative, and really gets the type of smoke that I want.

I apologize ahead of time. It's 9 minutes...I tried to throw some B-roll in there so it wasn't just my face the whole time, but I think I touched on everything I needed to. If you have more questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

I say in the video that I haven't tried it inside and that I don't think it'll set off an alarm...kinda don't want to risk that, so I wouldn't go full throttle in an enclosed space :)

Excellent job, Aaron. What is the weight of the jp like with this setup in it?

The MOW pack alone weights 7-8kg (15-17lbs). With the smoke setup, the heavier part is the battery which weighs in around 1.5lbs. So let's say around 20lbs (give or take) for the whole pack. I'm hoping that the MOW harness is going to be comfy enough. I will have a demo on that when I attach the hooks/clips and get everything lined up properly.

I managed to find a way to secure my thrusters without gluing them, and without the bar. I screwed in a few hooks as suggested, and used a bungie cord to hook both together. It's getting cramped, but everything is in there. Because of the lack of space, it's a bit cumbersome and will take some getting used to. The important thing is that it works.

Apologies for the phone pics, it was a last minute deal.

The exact 'volume' of smoke, I don't really know how to put a value on. It's very dense. In the test videos that Andrew sent me, he filled his entire garage in about a minute. The total run time for the unit would be 4 minutes. Then you refuel. If you don't refuel, you risk burning out the unit. If you're trooping, I think 4 minutes is a good window of time. Once the unit is warmed up, 5 second bursts are all I would need. That would give me 12 bursts per minute, 48 bursts (approx.) total. Plenty before I would have to take a break and refuel.

One thing I didn't touch on was the battery. A fully charged battery can last for 3-4 sessions. So 3-4 refuels.

Edit: I didn't want to do a full 4 minute run in the video because I live in a busy area. Pretty sure someone would have thought my building was on fire :)

My exact thoughts transcribed onto the page:

"That is a sweet looking jetpack, I hope mine turns out even close to looking that good."

"Smoke? I don't know. That seems like a whole lot of trouble. I mean, when could I use it? Probably not inside at Celebration VII. Nah, I would have no clue how to install it, it would cost more money, i'd have to mess with liquid and more electronics, (* clicks on video *) and OH MY GOD THAT IS THE COOLEST THING EVER!!! I MUST HAVE IT!! Where is that link...?!"

Thanks a lot, Aaron! (And strong work!)
