Colour matching - Humbrol

I have a Cod, kidney, back, knee and shoulder bells painted by Daz aka boba maker

the knees and shoulder do not matter as they can be used as is (no need to match)

The chest and neck armour is unpainted bobamaker and redkyrodragon

After 2 months i have been trying to match boba maker i have tried and tried and got no where close even ordering the exact same grey daz/ boba maker uses- its close very close but not exact

I cannot match the yellow either The humbrol yellow and greens are very different, i was thinking of using a combination of humbrol enamel and tamiya acrylic- Can this be done ?


The cod and kidney are lower down - plus they are hidden by the girth belt, the back his hidden by the jet pack- would i get away with having two different coloured yellow stippling and greens ?

The greens here are the humbrol greens as suggested in the humbrol thread :

76 is too light and 76 not the right hue, no matter how much i mix these 1.1 , 2.1 i cant match boba maker





The yellows on paper are humbrol yellows, the yellow on the armour is acylic tamiya

Again Humbrol 99 is too bright and 154 is orange yellow, so no where near BM



Should i bother trying to match these or would a little bit of variation matter ?

Although it is possible to mix oil based paints with other oil based paints and same with acrylics, (although I'm not sure how well it would work) mixing oil based paints (humbrol) with acrylics (tamiya) will not work at all. Oil and water never mix.

I'd say that the green you have in the last picture seems nearly spot on, nobody would really notice, and I think a little variation is good. You may be able to match the paint exactly if you apply the paint with an airbrush. Paints applied with an airbrush always turn out slightly lighter due to the thinner you mix in with it.

I have an iwata revolution airbrush thats how i put down the silver enamel


the green i have that's the last one is acrylic- saying that the base is enamel and it looks the like acrylic sits well on top

le1120 is correct, you cant mix acrylic and enamels, you will get a disaster.

You can put acrylics over enamels, but not vise versa. The enamel wont cure properly over acrylics and it will remain tacky. I learned this the hard way years ago painting a model car trying to get the perfect color.

I agree with le1120 about variation...looks oike you got it pretty darn close. I think you'll be fine with that mix, boba isnt exactly a perfect shade of anything lol.

As far as I know the exact shade of green used by the prop makers on the original movie was never disclosed, so its going to be a case of what looks right for you, and to be fair you have got it spot on to everything I have ever seen, can you do a new thread with all the Humbrol color codes you used I would be interested in reading that

as for the knees they have a sort of orange tinge to them as well as yellow but only very faint that's could be the hue correction you are looking for.

i wanted it to be spot on so that i have no issues with clearing 501, hence why i am being pedantic

The colour i have thats right is acrylic

I have yet to find or be able to mix this colour in enamel

so there goes my plan then that mix is acrylic, i was planning on putting the detailing on top in enamel

wold it be work tracking down a 501st member and getting thier take on it?

They refuse to comment unless you submit the entire outfit

Plus they rarely comment i been trying to grab their attention for at least 6 months no comments on my thread

Really....thats just silly, :rolleyes well I think you nailed it pal I could not tell between yours and any other memebrs here thats for sure.
