General 3D ESB Boba Fett progress thread

New Hunter
Hey guys! I'm an animator, and decided to make my dream build digitally instead of practically. It's an ESB, with a goal of combining screen accuracy with optimization (20,000 polys, 10 sec/f render currently). I personally modeled and painted everything using Maya, Mudbox, and Photoshop. Rendered in Arnold. Thanks to the members who provide photos, templates, research, etc that aided my process.

Still have several things to create... and the goal is to rig/animate him when finished. Comments/critique are welcomed! I want this sucker looking screen-ready!

It looks awesome! I love it!

Just a few things to change/alter (so far):

The helmet looks a bit big compared to the body. The dome should be a bit taller and more rounded (yours is a bit pointy).
The ammo pouches are bulky, you should thin them down (for accurate looking ammo belt with pouches go here ==> http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/f20/tutorial-ammo-belts-v2-rafalfett-templates-47515/).
The armor shapes are off, especially the back, the chest and the abdominal plates.

Keep up the great work!

Thanks so much, Rafal! Your posts have been excellent resources. Addressed all of your feedback - only area I'm still a little unsure of is the torso armor.

Got a little carried away today.. whipped up the jetpack and its harness.

You could add the button to the side of the right gauntlet...straps on the knees...white blocks on the whipcord...didnt see anything else at a glance. Nice job so far!

Thanks for the support, guys! I addressed your feedback... and finished modeling everything else. For the next step, I'll be going back and overhauling the textures. I'll be redoing most of them to add detail and realism. Again, a big thanks to this community for being such a necessary resource for me!

thanks! Updated textures for the gloves, boots, cape, flight suit, vest, and all the armor. Still working to get more realism.

Also, here is a quick and dirty test of putting him in an ESB environment. Just for fun!

Wow... WoW... WOW!!!

This is the greatest 3D model of the ESB Boba Fett I ever saw so far! All the colors are pretty accurate and 80-90% of the model looks great! As I already mentioned, you should redo/change the torso armor as it looks a bit misshaped, but also lacks the dents too. You can use my templates as a guide ==> The Rafal Works Armor (RWA) Templates. The helmet ears looks a bit off, especially the right ear (the rangefinder one); and this goes for the shin tools too. The shoulder studs are not just some cubes, but have a slight taper, like a piramid cut in half.I also have a 3D project thread with lots of models to download for free, so you can incorporate some of them into your model ==> RafalFett's Boba Fett 3D Projects. Another thing you can change is the black strip on the shoes, which is tapered, but not as much as yours. Another thing is that the side arm holster has the front pouch cut off on the original, sou you should do the same.

Keep up the great work!

thanks so much, RafalFett! I can't even tell you how informative that post was. I'll definitely be making all of those changes. I had adjusted the torso armor when you mentioned it before, but those templates will help make it more accurate. Also planning to change the cloth texture, and fix his right knee armor that is intersecting with his suit - oops!

Planning to update tonight or tomorrow, depending on timing with freelance projects

rdavies_fett_pose01_v2c_1080.jpghere's a revised version with major changes being to the armor, shoulder studs, boots, cloth (though it still needs work i think) and ears.

I'm very impressed by this. I teach photoshop and a few other graphics programs to high school students....we've been working with Blender which I'm still trying to wrap my head around. It's so cool watching something like this come to life.

:ryanimates Amazing stuff! :deathproof I myself am trying to learn blender and its no easy task!

thanks guys! I appreciate the kind words. DeathProof: I started out by using Blender in highschool, I think it's great that you're teaching it! Taking a break from the suit to work on the EE-3. Modeling is almost finished, here's an image

It looks almost perfect!

This pose is perfect for the 'shooting at Luke' scene in the Cloud City hallways or the 'aiming Chewie' scene in the Carbon Chamber.

I think you should darken the girth belt more it's to red. Should be more toward maroon....flight suit also seems maybe to dark? Maybe lighten it a tad. I'm not sure if it's possible to add weathering to the flightsuit but above the knees it looks very much clean compared to the ankle area.

Regardless of all that though. It's looking great!
