BatNinja's Ammo Pouch Tutorial

Several members have asked how I constructed my pouches, so I thought I'd share the knowledge. A quick note: these measurements and procedures may or may not be movie-accurate, but it seemed close enough for me.

I hope these diagrams help some of you with your belts! Here's the finished product:

Okay, here are ALOT of pics from the actual process...

Tools of the trade

Pouch Template

Ready to glue...

Stretching the vinyl gives the finished pouch a flat, uniform look:

This is the order I spot-glued:

Then the bottom...

And finally, the top:
front_finished.jpg

Now, the flap template

After spraying with 3M Adhesive Spray, press the sides to the center:

The back of the flap should look like this:

On one end, cut the corners (I used a plastic template)

Another look at the corners:

Stitching (note the Teflon presser foot)

The finished flaps

Gluing steps 1-4 (see digrams above)

After the glue dries for steps 1-4, glue the front flap

And finally, the finished pouch!

Mods, please let me know if there's a limit on the number of pics in a thead. My apologies in advance!

A couple of other notes...

I always make extra pouch flaps (around 12-14). This allows me to pick and choose the ones that have better stitching. I am NOT a professional!

For the main belt, I use the same approach as the pouch flaps: 5" wide, 3M spray, folded into itself, makes a 2.5" wide belt.

Great job BN thanks for the tutorial, i just joined the group a couple of days ago and I can not believe all of the great tutorials that are on here.

Man I can not wait to start build my suit.

Great tutorial BatNinja. (y)

BTW ... I used the teflon presser foot, like you suggested, and it worked great on leather tool.

Gator

Thanks for the comments, guys!

As far as needles go, yes, I used a standard leather/denim needle. The thread is just plain ol' all-purpose thread. I went with an off-white color.

I set my thread tension to a hair over 3, and my stitch length to just under 4. Even with the Teflon foot, the vinyl tends to drag a bit (I use an inexpensive Kenmore machine), hence the longer stitch length. Of course, every sewing machine is different, so you'll have to experiment with different settings until you find what looks right.

What's the secret behind the teflon foot? My machine only has metal.

Great tutorial by the way... very well done.

Thanks!

You'll have to purchase the Teflon foot separately. Ask an associate at Jo-Ann's or Hancock Fabrics, they'll point you in the right direction. You can find them for around $4. I went to a 'specialty' shop, and got conned into paying almost $20 for mine.

The non-stick surface of the Teflon foot glides more easily over the textured vinyl than the standard metal foot. You don't know how many pouch flaps I ruined before I found that info through a Google search. Everything...is online.

Wax paper and tissue paper were also suggested, but I use the stitchplate opening as my guide, and couldn't see the opening very well using paper.

Hey BAtNinja!

I received your ammo belt today and I must say that I was very impressed with the quality of your work!! Guys and Gals, if your looking for a great looking ammo belt that is also at a great price, look no further and get this belt!!!

LAter!!!!!!!!!!! (y)

Hey Ninja .... where did you get those grommets ? My belt is done except for the grommets . I can find bigger ones & smaller ones but nothing in between .Those look spot on .

Mike

Fettism, I found the grommets at Wal-Mart. I actually went back tonight to pick up some more, but they were temporarily sold out (so I don't have a stock number for you). I DO know they're sized at 1/4", sold fifteen to a pack, and are 'antiqued' very nicely.

Thanks for the heads up . I'll check to see if they have them at Wall Mart here . Sometimes the Wall Marts in Canada dont always carry all the same stuff . Cheers

Mike

dude what a piece of craftmanship couldn't have done better my self ...lmao
just what i was looking for should have one by the end of next month

BatNinja,
Man, what an awesome tutorial! Do you have any idea how much vinyl you use to do a belt? Just trying to figure out how much it would cost buying it by the yard.
