With a little help from my friends - ROTJ SE WIP

DentedGent

Hunter
Hello everyone, DentedGent here.
Not necessarily new to the forums myself, but new to the community.
I have been researching and lurking around the forums dreaming of building my own costume for a long time now.
I made a wee little post about a year ago introducing myself and talking about how I was planning on constructing a ROTJ SE build using BM parts.
After such a long and winding year, it has finally arrived and ready to be worked on. My dream is becoming a reality! :angel
I am creating this thread to showcase my progress and work in order to learn and create the best Fett I can to honor fine craftsmanship such as BM's.
Hopefully you guys can help guide a newbie like me in the right direction and avoid any major pitfalls. If anything, I want to do BM's work some justice and I would rather sell it than ruin it.
Please feel free to comment, critique, suggest, etc... I want to learn from the community more than what I just happen to find on the threads.
If anyone has great threads or tutorials they would like to share, please do.
I am currently in need of a humbrol paint guide for ROTJ SE, detailed documented process if possible. Layered/Topical mixed method? Masking tips/tricks? Anything helps. Thank You.

A little bit about myself: I'm a graphic designer and life-long Fett fan based in Los Angeles, I am an avid illustrator and painter. I mostly use graphite, inks, copics, oil paints, acrylic paints and photoshop.
I have a steady hand and I hope to prove it by painting up my own armor and getting down the closest to screen-accurate Fett I can make.
I have painted a few models and worked minimally with spray paints, but this will be my first real task with such complexity with enamels and layering/masking.

Here are some photos of the assembly. I also purchased a compressor and gun for the spray job since I want more control when painting.
So far, I have collected various Humbrol paints in order to prepare for the job (a photo of the ones I currently have is included below).

Thank you for your time and see you guys around!

Just a thought, you may want to order more silver. Although I've gone and silvered everything completely with the Humbrol #11, I think I'm up to about six tins so far. Everything else was a reasonable amount, but I seemed to need a lot of silver to get everything covered evenly.

Also, that looks like a very nice compressor, can you give some details (where and how much)? Mine is a dinky little model that overheats far too quickly...

Thanks for the tip! I thought the same thing as well when I looked over them.
I'm going to the store today to pick up more supplies if you have any other suggestions.
I'll have to find a humbrol Rotj list and a humbrol ESB bucket list to know for sure if I have all the paints I need.

The compressor is a Paasche model D500 with auto shut-off. I bought it as a kit for $100 since they sold it at a good deal at my local hobby store. Been working well for over a year now with no complaints. Powerful enough for all my work, but I want a new gun... Hopefully an iwata. The way my gun is with the cup on the bottom makes it a huge pain to clean up and the precision of the gun is very poor but good enough to get this job done.

Thanks for the airbrush/compressor info. I have a paasche also, and I fully agree about the cup on the bottom! Here is (what I think is) a good guide for paints: https://www.mindmeister.com/113525354/boba-fett-paint-colors

I've seen that compressor being talked a lot in other forums I'm apart of. Seem's to do pretty well, I may have to personally look into it myself since I have an entry compressor that just doesn't cut it.
This WIP is looking great so far, lots of hard work and its just the beginning. Looking forward to seeing more of this also.

Here is the "workshop" at the moment. This project really seems to be 90% research/planning and 10% of hands on work.

I was busy the past week doing the helmet right of the BM bucket. A commission for a friend of mine for a custom "sith" mando.
Good learning experience using rattlecans but my airbrush is heavenly compared to the spray cans imo.

Just put on the first coat of "aluminum/silver"
I believe it's coming out a little too light compared to most of the other jobs I've seen on here but I'll have to compare after the second coat.
First coat took 1 and 1/3 tins of humbrol #11.
Mixing ratio of 2:1~3:1

What do you guys think so far?

It's ok to get arroused by these photographs right ?

Haha! I'll take that as a sign I'm going in the right direction.

I was honestly terrified to start this process after all the research I was putting in...
Seeing so many great artists and people who do such great work, and marking on a BM suit is daunting in itself for me.
After putting on this first coat, I can say it broke the ice and I can't wait to start tackling the next steps.

So far I'm planning on doing the small armor pieces first, accessories, gauntlets, jet pack, then lastly the bucket.

Okay so 3 tins of #11 later and it's a fresh 3rd coat. I'll definitely have to order more for the bucket, but my main concern is that I have the right amount of coverage. Under my tungsten light it appears fine, but under natural light in certain angles it can appear blotchy. If anyone could give their insight it would be much appreciated. So far I think I'm going to buy another 4-6 cans.

Does anyone know a reputable/cheap humbrol US online dealer I could order the paints from? I literally cleared out my local hobby store's supply last year and they haven't restocked since my ransacking lol

Also, if anyone could direct me to someone who could supply me with real metal flamethrower tips, gauntlet darts, dental pieces and wrist blaster it would be greatly appreciated!

If I can find proper metal replacements for these parts I will put them up for sale.

It's been a little while but I've been a busy bee... I think I'm in the final stages of completing my gauntlets. Please, leave some feedback. Comments, critique. Politely please... But I want to hear your thoughts.

I used Rustoleum Claret Wine and Humbrol Maskol. Lightly touched up with #0000 wire wool to get definition. Weathered according to Deathproof's palette. Acrylic Tamiya silver for fine speckling and scratches.

Whaddaya think?

On to the armor! ...or jet pack.

One place you can get the metal parts for the gauntlets is Dakota with machine craft replicas. He has a sale thread in the cargo hold that has all of his products listed. He doesn't actually sell metal dental expanders but toolguy does sell them in metal on shapeways. Toolguy also has some sale threads in the cargo hold with links to his products on shapeways. So far your gauntlets look really good. The red always looks so good when it goes on.

#103 is down on the shoulders and knees with the silver masking removed. Next step is to remask and apply the #154.

Phew... Just the decal and finishing touches/weathering left on these babies. I left a bit of the yellow showing for greater tonal difference. Not sure if I should orange it up a bit more or leave it. Any thoughts?
