It never ceases to amaze me how the subconscious and inspiration can conspire in our minds only to be revealed so much later down the road.
As many know, I am new to cosplay and specifically, Boba Fett costuming. Now that is not to say I am new to costuming altogether. I have spent the last seven years playing in the SCA, doing medieval and renaissance costuming. I fought in the heavy weapons group as well. About six years ago I had my first custom made helm created for me.
It’s a non-period piece loosely based on a Varangian looking helm. I was never 100% certain why I liked it so much. Why it spoke to me. There was something about the shape of the faceguard. And the eyes.
I had fought in other helms and moved years later to a more renaissance style Scottish burgonet helm. But this one was always my favorite. I could never part with it.
Later, even though I rarely fought in it, I added a chainmail aventail and some green leather panels with some metal celtic knotwork pieces to it. Just for fun. I really liked the green. Again, I was unsure why. It just spoke to me.
Then a couple weeks ago I saw the pictures of the Samurai Boba Fett action figure coming out.
Very cool of course. Thought it would be fun to do something similar someday. Then this morning in the shower it hit me!! I know why I liked the cut of my first helm so much! It was very reminiscent of a dear old friend!!
So I have decided that while I am waiting for my FPH2 helmet to come in and as soon as I get my airbrush kit in, I am going to put together another ‘alternative’ Fett…
Syr Fett…
