I think you've got it right. That's how I always saw it too. Iirc, the original idea was also that his armor was pieced together and customized by him. I personally never liked the idea that he was ever formally a "Mandalorian", or had much to do with them at all, and much preferred the notion that he was just a bada$$ mercenary that wore armor he picked up and customized over the course of his travels.
