3 more self contained kits are good to go, as well as a wired kit for the asok/animefan RF topper. I will be building one or two fph2 kits later this week, as well as finishing up a run of 2 servo kits. Once the 2 servo kits are gone I will order a few more servos (I have everything else on hand) to do a run of 2 or 3 more servo kits.

UPDATE ON THE SELF CONTAINED RANGEFINDER KITS ONLY!!!

Until further notice, I am halting production on the self contained rangefinder light kits. I have had a few returns recently due to faulty tilt switches. Since I am unable to find a suitable replacement (I would rather not use a mercury tilt switch), I don't want to keep selling a product that could arrive to the buyer non functional.

Since Ryan (Animefan) provides hollow stalks, I may alter the modified Asok/Animefan kit to use an external coin cell battery holder rather than a 9v to help with interior helmet space. This kit will still need a space in the ear piece that holds the honeywell micro switch(one will be included with the kit).

If anyone has ideas of replacement tilt switches that are close to the size of what is currently used, let me know.
Thanks, and sorry about the bad switches to those that got one.

    UPDATE

I have a couple of kits that have a mercury switch instead of the tilt switch. I sold one (at a discount price since I am not sure that they will work correctly), once I get some feedback on it, I may start to offer these again with the mercury switch. I have 2 more with the mercury switch ready to go (they are not listed on sellbuddy), I will sell them for $45 including shipping within the USA since these are basically prototypes. Once the run of boards for the self contained kits are gone, I will need to redesign the board to better accommodate the mercury switch. These new kits with the new board will be regular price $50 plus shipping.

    UPDATE

I will be offering the self contained kits again. I have removed the tilt switch and replaced it with a small mercury switch. I have also changed the modified Asok kit (the kit that needs a hollow stalk and uses the micro switch) to run off of 2 coin cell batteries rather than a 9v. The new battery holder is way thinner than the 9v one and it also has an on/off switch on it. I am hoping to have a few of both kits (the modified and self contained) ready to go in the next couple days.

The self contained light kits are now available. I will be building some in the next week and listing them on sellbuddy when they are ready to go. I will also be doing some of the hollow stalk Asok kits in the near future, so keep an eye on the sellbuddy ad for all my products.

    Hi Jc,

I have a TF topper on a solid aluminum stalk. It currently holds a self contained light unit made for me years ago. I needed the TF topper as it was bigger than my original FP, and it holds the light unit with no problem. However, the internal motion switch on the unit isn't reliable, so I may be upgrading to your kit.

One question I have, (and I think I've read the answer but I wanted to be sure) was this, does your self contained unit fit in the TF topper, and does the switch get funky and work when it feels like it on occasion?

The second question I had was regarding the RC kit. I'd built my own from the old Zip-Zap car tutorial that was here. It didn't work very well, as the stalk would go down, but only partway back up (cue Viagra jokes). I suspected that it was due to the self contained light, and topper, maybe being too heavy for the servo to lift, but it was the same model 77bb servo that everyone seems to use. I possibly had it underpowered? I'd read your battery recommendations and was thinking maybe that was the issue.

Also to anyone else reading, has anyone encountered issues where the servo doesn't lift properly? Just wondering if it was a failed experiment on my part.

    Thanks for reading,

    Tim

As of now my self contained kit will not fit the TF topper (I think TF said he was working on a new topper that could use my kit, but I am not positive on that). My original self contained kit used a tilt switch that turned out to be not as reliable as I would have liked, so I changed it to a small mercury switch which seems to be much better (I just recently started using these, so I am waiting for feedback to see if there are any issues).
As for the servo, how much power are you supplying it? the HS-77BB works on either 4.8 or 6 volts. Each of these voltages have a different lifting torque, so if you are using the lower voltage, it will not be able to lift as much if it were given 6 volts (6 volts is the max, any more than that and you will most likely smoke the servo).
There is a formula to calculate servo torque, here are some examples.
    Servo-A has 42 oz-in of torque
    42 divided by 16 = 2.63 Lb-In. of force on a 1" servo arm
    Servo-B has 2.5 oz-in of torque 2.5 divided by 2 = 1.25 Oz.-In. of force on a 2" servo arm
    Servo C has a 36 oz-in of torque 36 divided by 4 = 9 oz-in of force on a 4 inch servo arm

The HS-77BB has a torque rating of 76 oz-in at 6 volts. I used 8 inches as the arm length (the stalk) and you get 76/8=9.5 oz-in. I weighed my aluminum stalk, the TF topper with a light kit installed and it weighed less than 9 oz so a HS-77BB should have enough torque to lift your rangefinder.
As for the zip zap kit, its a cheap way to have a remote rangefinder, but it will kill your batteries and eventually burn up the servo. Servos work on PWM (pulse width modulation) and the zip zap kit just gives full power or no power to the servo which will make it run constantly or not at all, which causes the battery drain and the servo damage.

Thanks. I was hoping to get some feedback on how the kits with the mercury switch work.

Thanks JC, that may help a lot.

I'll have to weigh the current setup, but I'm thinking it was just the zip zap experiment in general that was bad. It was probably powered incorrectly.

I think I also have my original FP topper from 2009 floating around someplace but I believe it's much smaller than my 2009 TF.

    Thanks for the help.

Circuit boards for the self contained and modified light kits should be here next week. Keep an eye out here for updates on availability. Once I get some sold, I will order boards for the terminal fettler light kits.
