the Neck Seal: What is it?

Ok, I realize that a neck seal covers the neck, but other than that... I'd like to know what it is exactly and what it looks like. this may seem strange, but I don't know what it is so please help. :cheers

in the book the armor is airtight enabling Fett to survive in space for short amounts of time.
