Normally, I do very light coats on everything BUT this Rustoleum (I have heard appliance epoxy works well too but I have never tried it). Yeah the first coat, i'll go decently light, give it maybe 5 minutes or so, then go with a heavy coating for the second spray. I will then go a third IF necessary, if you go really thick the cure time goes up of course but with all the helmets I have done, I have had great results but it's a fine line, a bit more and you get drips. The last TB I did, I had one slight drip on the edge of the visor but it was hardly noticeable (well it was to me haha) but the owner was fine with it.
To light and you get an orange peeled finish, it's a bit finicky but it has great results and holds up to abuse really well. The wax helps too, I also us a Toyo Guard synthetic that a friend of mine got with his Toyota, the stuff works awesome on both paint and abs alike.
There is two types of Rustoleums and sometimes people grab the wrong one, I was curious which on the OP used?
