A friend of mine suggested that it was some galactic mental illness equivalent to alzheimers, I slapped him in the face twice. Once for his suggestion and another for the ridiculous name he came up with.
Also Luke never refers to R2 by name..er, number...he refers to him as 'this little droid'. Droids would be like automobiles. They are all over the place. There are some that even look the same but they all have different VIN numbers. Until Obi Wan figured out R2's 'VIN' number, he wouldn't have known what droid he was dealing with.
the search for an explanation is an exercise in mental gymnastics because the truth is, Lucas had no idea of this part of Obi Wan's backstory when he wrote and shot Episode IV. It's just one of a plethora of details he ruins with the prequels.
AMEN to this! That is why it took me so long to come back to Boba Fett. As the bounty hunter we all know and love, he is awesome! The kid in Ep. 2 darn near killed it for me! I don't acknowledge the prequels much anymore.

I didnt think the young boba was so bad...i do however HATE that on the DVD release of the special edition ESB, he changed Boba's voice to Jangos..which i guess technically makes sence, but to me that voice is NOT Boba!
As for the R2 Obi Wan thing...i always chalked it up as he knew...just wasnt tellin lol..pretty much for reasons already mentioned
