Silicone Caulk Props...What!?

Hi this is my first formal post on this site, so first of all hi, my name is Jeffrey and i am a special effects artist. Anyways i have been working with two part silicone, alginate, and plaster for years now, but in my freelance work i know that theaters and other groups doesn't have the money to spend on these items.

I have been experimenting with 100% silicone caulk, and trying to get it to form solid pieces and still cure. So fare i have been able to use Glycerin to help the curing process.

so i guess my question is do you know of any chemicals to add to silicone caulk to get it to pore like two part silicone?

I was hoping to be able to get some useful information from you guys, what are your thoughts?

No, not pouring, it is a gel and the only way to get it to smooth out is to wait till a film comes on it and smooth it out with the fingers.

The active ingredient in silicone caulk is acetic acid which leaves the caulk and causes it to harden, it actually needs a damp environment to cure.

It can however take up to 2-3 days to cure and up to a week with thick walled molds, so the best thing to do is by spraying the caulk with water and then going over it with a hair dryer, it will aid the evaporation of the acetic acid.

Have you tried to pigment imbed your silicon with acrylic paint or powdered pigments? example: taking clear silicon and adding black paint, mix thoroughly and end up with black silicon. this is a specific question obviously.

Saz, do you know of a chemical that can be added to help remove the acetic acid?

yoshitrooper, yes i have, i have used both professional pigments, and acrylics, and they both work just fine.

I was wondering if/how I could use DIY tubes of silicone sealant and now I know.

Having read through the various contributions I have now taken my molds out of the warm and dry airing
cupboard and put them in the damp shed to help them cure.

They are also relatively thick (more than 6mm) in places so i will take my time before demolding the 6th scale heads
I have sculpted and want to cast.

Next I think I want to know if there is a cheaper alternative to silicone resin from the specialist suppliers.
