Hey guys, film distribution is complicated. The film companies do not own the theaters. They have to sell the film to the exhibition companies... if the exhibitors don't want to rent the prints for whatever reason, then little can be done. Also, prints are freaking expensive. Not every film can have 2000 prints at the ready on opening day. For a film of this size and nature, this is a very typical distribution scheme. They are very lucky to have it this good, actually. Normally they will open small in some select markets and if it catches on in those markets, they can open in smaller markets. But it is extremely rare that this ever happens, of course. Especially for February releases. It is no secret in the film industry that what the studios perceive as their duds are released in February to get them off the slate.
