Indeed, I just began work on my own trashcan Mando armor. So far I have the shoulders cut out all of the way. I am making a custom, with Boba chest and shoulders, with Jango lower pieces. The thigh armor actually turned out pretty well made from the sides of the 8 gallon can.
Only bummer is, the belly piece cracked along the bottom as we were cutting it out.
INCREDIBLE! But do you think a 13 year old kid like me could do it?

If you use the templates and take you time tracing/cutting you should have no problem.
From a 40 year old father (with two kids that are 13) to a 13 year old young man besure to be careful when cutting and triming your parts.

Yeah, I am still young enough to remember being thirteen, and I think I could have done it then. Also, I think I would have cut myself a lot in the process back then.
*So, a good idea would be to have someone work on it with you.
As Lopero said, be careful.
*Another tip from me is to make sure whoever is helping you has a really good utility knife with a locking blade. I broke a few low quality ones scoring my armor, and the sliding blades get stuck in the plastic and pull out.
*Put down a drop sheet...you will shoot plastic slivers and shavings all over the place. They played havoc with my wife's vacuum cleaner.
Good luck, and cut away from yourself.
You can do it, man. Don't doubt yourself, and like they said, take your time. Don't press too hard with your razorblade, and just run over the lines a few times. Definitely try to find someone to help you if you feel you can't handle it yourself, or you're afraid of cutting yourself.
It's also a fun idea to have someone work with you: they can help motivate you along, and it helps long work times go by...
I'm working with a friend and things I might not know how to do, we can work on together.
Hey Fettination. Congrats on joining the site!The trash can plastic is thick and tough. You may want to use "For sale" signs instead. You can buy them at Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Home Depot. They are thinner, made out of Sintra, easy to cut with either scissors or a utility knife, and Superglue glues the pieces together like nobody's business!
Watch your fingers, though.
As others have said before, work with a partner, if possible. It's always good to have another set of hands. Looking forward to seeing your work. There are lots of helpful people on this site and even more information.

Word! It's so much more fun to work with someone. It makes it seem like play instead of work.
Yeah...having someone to make fun of you makes mistakes seem like laughing matters instead of wanting to pull your hair out (see my comment above re: cracked belly piece.)
Alright, I figured I'd try my hand at this and here is my first shot at it. I have just begun working on the shoulder bells and butt armor.
You can't tell in the image, but there are quite a few layers of paint already. I worked up the surface and used a palm sander to rip most of the paint off then worked it back up again. The result is armor that has a real feeling of use and alteration to it. Once I get me decals I'll do another layer of "dirt" then seal the whole thing.

Hey, thanks alot. I have my shoulder bells and butt piece's primer layer drying outside right now. I had hoped to do them yesterday but we ended up getting nine inches of snow so no spray painting for me.
I want to try to make a cod piece out of the trash can. I figure I'll combine a few pieces and bondo them together. Worse that happens is it doesn't work. Anyway, that'll be tomorrow's project.

Im new to the site, but ive loved fett since i saw the films. And being as im a 16 year old i have no money to put into a really expensive set. The can is sitting right next to me
Here's an update for me--what I have cut out so far! Got a few more pieces out of one can and two lids than I thought, and not all of them are pictured. The extra pieces I have are going to my Mando friend, who went in with me on materials.
I don't have anything painted yet, and not yet smoothed on the edges. I'm also working on a helmet from scratch, but first on a prototype to see how the pieces fit together. I'm also going to have to seriously form the chest plates.8)

You know, at first I was afraid to look at this thread. I thought what kind of sick person would make mando armor from a trash can? Oscar the Fett?
But alas! I am left speechless! That is the coolest thing I've ever seen. I'm going to make some for the wifey!

i have to say that is really a cool idea....i am going to do this for my son's armor...the only question i have is connecting the armor to the vest...i want to do snaps, like tk409 does on his website, but looking at how these cuts are made, the snaps would push the armor aways from the vest, not letting the armor be snug up to the vest....any ideas? and once again, awesome, awesome stuff!!!:thumbup
Has anybody used velcro to fix the armor plates to the vest?
My armor!!! no bells yet though, currentley cutting them outplease note: i did NOT have the patterns at the time i cut it out. i still think it looks decent though
BTW GREAT idea!!!!! its inexpensive and easy to do! probobly took me 5-6 hours total. still needs some minor shaping, and painting. It might turn out as custom, i might do boba.

How do you get the patterns to trace?
The patterns you seek can be found in this thread. I've used a lot of the patterns and templates from WOF and they are all great.

Would doing multiple layers of the trash can armor be a good idea? Like, making it thicker and stiffer? Or perhaps using scraps around the edges of the armor, to give the illusion of thickness?

Thought I'd throw mine into the mix. This was for the premiere of Clone Wars, and alot of stuff was done last minute. I'm interested in making cheap gauntlets for Halloween, anyone have any ideas for do it yourself gauntlets without vaccum forming?
I thought it was a good idea but I guess the glue I used warps the sintra. I dont remember what I used and why it did that but be careful what you use. I finally just got sick of it and got thick plastic. heres my old and then my new.

In a real pinch you could try using larger plastic cups from Wal-Mart or something. A quick and dirty gauntlet rocket can be made from a toilet paper holder with a dollar-store child's top on the front and pencil holder or a toothbrush travel container can be the flame box.
I did this for a buddy's son one year but I didn't get any pics, sorry. If all you want is something really basic for Halloween and don't plan to need it for approval or anything, most people won't even notice.

I just got back from walmart and realized the trash can I bought doesn't really curve and it dawned on me that this wasn't the right trash can. (epic failure)
For tracing onto the trash can you could use graphite paper and trace WOF's templates onto the can or the cheap version (coloring the back of the printed template with a #2 pencil) and just tape it on and trace... That is what I did and it worked excellently
I do have one question for everyone that has done this sofar... How did you remove the slight texture the trash can has? would primer take care of that or very fine sand paper (1000-2000 grit)?

Cool idea, I live like 2 blocks from Wal*Mart so I'm gonna get me a couple o' cans start a cuttin'. I may even try to make some of the Clone Wars Jedi collar/shoulder armor.

Just got my 2 cans today, hopefully I'll get my tin snips over the weekend and get a cuttin'.
Just wanna echo the sentiments of everyone else here and say thanks for the ingenuity. Granted I make the mistake of buying the wrong 8 gal can and cut too much from the first 13 gal that I had to get a second, but that was my mistake. But it still is an impressively easy idea, and looks fairly decent too.
Trash can armor...nice. How does it compare to sintra armor? (in terms of cost and durability) A set of sintra cost $40 or so plus the money to buy a heat gun if you don't already have one.

i gota say trash can armor is really awsome,i have a thread were you can see mine ,post it later,but i find the can plastic is pretty sturdy and its only like $15 for the big can its a genius way to make your pwn custom mando
As soon as I saw this thread I ran to Wal Mart to pick up some cans so I could make a set of Boba armor for my little one. We are having so much fun and it is working so well that I have even begun work on a custom Mando for myself. How's that for mother/child bonding!

Absolutely stupendous idea - very well done.
For tracing I just printed out the MOW templates and taped them with scotch tape to the trash can. The just cut on the lines with the razor cutter. So much easier than trying to draw or trace the parts on the can.
I really want to know how this compares to sintra. I know it is cheaper but...
1) Is it as strong?
2) Can i work it with heat?
3) Does sanding then painting get a good look?
If someone has made this armor and could just tell me how it stands up, because I made some cardboard armor and I want to make a good set of armor, but I am still on a limited budget.
I made it. It heats up not quite as smoothly as sintra but it does work. I was able to shape my back plate pretty well. It's plastic, ya know...garbage cans..it won't stop bullets but it's **** strong. It won't break. It's actually preferable to my sintra armor as I find it more durable.
It paints well with layering and you can sand it just as smooth although it will take a bit longer and more work to get the surface there. Above all, it's cheap, very available and easy. If you make a mistake go buy another 5 dollar trashcan and make another whole set.

I tried to form my chestplates, but will likely have to go with another design as there is only so much bending the trash can plastic can do, but I formed my shoulder parts fairly easily with a heat gun.
This plastic is indeed sturdy!

Hey mate,
You don't have to heat and bend the chest armor..if you place the printouts correctly on the can at the correct angle the natural curve of the oval shaped can is almost perfect for rib placement.
I didn't shape my chest armor, abs, or shoulder bells at all. It's all about the placement of the printouts on the can. Only the back plate needed to be shaped...see my thread about jango trashcan backplate to see how I did it.

hey guys, after i finish my armor (pics coming sometime.... its a resin version), I'm going to make a set for my girlfriend. So I thought I'd try the trash can method...has anyone tried it with female armor? I don't need umm... a "big" version, but at least the armor design. Are there patterns available?

I made my chest, back, shoulder bells, thigh, and cod armor out of trash cans. I'd say that it saved me a pretty penny overall and allowed more money to spend on helmet and gauntlets.
Budget fett so rocks. like the cheap guant rocket Idea. with enough work I bet i could make one that would still pass inspection or at least make one I could mold. Top,toilet middle and toothbrush holder Hmmm. with bondo sanding and a lot of work Hmm.
I'm going to try this as soon as I have time... This will be my first try at armor, so my lack of experience (and lack of cash) will be well served by this method.
How would you work the back plate? Off the top of my head, I would think you'd need to split the template and then piece it back together... It would also be great to see tutorials for doing the smaller armor bits the same way. I may just try it anyways, I'm sure it could work.
So I got a silly question. I made some TCA every thing went pretty good until I had to attach it the vest my wife was kind enough to make for me. I wanted to use snaps to attach it but I can not get any thing to stick to this stuff!!! In the end I ended up duct tapping snaps to the plates. This is only a temporary fix has any one had a similar problem? I would like to improve the quality of my kit.
Look at my post here and my link on back plate. You don't need to cut it in two. Don't make it harder than it is!

I Love this idea i used it for my first attempt at a Custom mando but I cant get anything to adhere to the surface of the sterlite plastic I had to Duct Tape my snaps to it and they kept comming off. Any one else have this issue? What is a good way to fix it?

I have been tossing around the idea of purchasing some armor off flea bay but i am sold this is just the best idea i have seen. now question where can i get templates so i can create the armor. yes yes i'm a noob to the site. however my project fett is well on its way. i just wish i was not in iraq so i could finish it

adonian--will do! I'm looking toward Sintra or possibly a type of foam mat that holds shape idea brought up by a fellow Merc.
Uptown--did you try a good type of super or Gorilla glue? Aside from those, I'm not sure what else would work for snaps. I haven't tried this yet, so I'm sure if someone else has, they'd have some good tricks to use.
I've been lurking on the boards for quite a long while doing research :-) Hopefully the (relative) simplicity and cheapness of building a trashcan suit will be the kick in the pants that I need to get me motivated to stop researching and start building!
I tried super glue, Industial hot glue, and two different kinds of epoxy I am going to try some CA glue I saw on a thread for gauntlets.

I am about to get started on my set of trash can armor and I wanted to know if you can bend the trash can material with boiling water or a hair dryer? Thats the only things I have available, don't know where my heat gun is and I'm not buying another one.

I did use boiling water--it seemed to work better on smaller parts, but even larger parts gained some flexibility. I don't think a hair dryer would get hot enough, but it's worth a shot, I suppose...at least until you find your heat gun.
I love it... it looks great and its easy on the wallet. How did you attach it to the vest though?
yea...my heat gun....NO CLUE WHERE IT IS! Arg, can't find any of my dad's tools after we moved. It sucks. =( Boiling should be fine for me...and I've heard of blow dryers working, never tried it though. xD

I've read that some people have used good pieces of Velcro, and other than that, I'm not sure how else to attach this type of plastic to a vest or flight suit. There might be more answers to that in a vest thread...

I didn't have the patience nor expertise yet to try a from-scratch helmet, but I've seen pics of others doing that, and they're turning out pretty nice!

Aside from the helmet, the shoulder parts are the first armor pieces I'm working on. I agree that they are a good starting point--smaller, easier to work with, and nice to test out your paint ideas.
Is there a similar 'trash can' avaliable in the UK?

got my chest, and belly, no shoulder bells or collar yet, I painted it with krylon plactic fusion paint, sticks good.
Since my color scheme is Black Silver and Purple, I think a Purple pleather vest is in order, but how to make a vest? I'm not a seamstress 8)
Once I get my cardboard guantlets in bondo I'm going to get started on these! Just a few questions.
Has anyone tried glassing and putting bondo on them for more thickness? And has anyone been 501st approved with these. With those two questions I'm ready to get started! This is an awesome idea and I'm all for it!
