    Boushh Helmet WIP

    Hey guys,

For those who have seen my Royal Guard helmet WIP, you know that I create a 3D model of the subject, then use papercraft software called Pepakura to unfold that model to give me 2D parts. Very similar to WoF templates.

Well, I'm working on another helmet now for a friend who wants a Boushh helmet for his wife in time for Halloween.

I'm basing it of various photos I have as there are no plans or blueprints that I'm aware of. So far I think it's shaping up well, let me know what you guys think.

I'm just staring to place everything and get the positioning down before going back over it to tidy it all up.

    mod2.jpg

I'll update as I go along. Thanks.

    Hey Skip..

Try not to make the Poly count to high!! that way you got less stuff to fold!! Heck I can smooth it out for ya in pep and still keep the poly low! But good job on the designs so far!

Thanks guys, Glad ya like it.

Yeah the software is free for a slightly limited version. Though for this purpose the free version is enough. I have the full version though as I design papermodels too.

WetOkole, nice to see ya here buddy! I'm keeping it pretty low. I'm keeping an eye on the buildability of it.

Looking great! I look forward to seeing this one too, and building it, if you post this one as well. I checked out your blog the other day. Not to hijack this thread but, Is the anubis mask on there life sized as well? If so I'm gonna have to build it too. What better piece for an embalmer than the Egyptian god of embalming.

    Re: Boushh Helmet WIP

LOL! Indeed! That would be an appropriate costume.

Yeah, that ones on the list but I've not started it yet. The model pictured on my blog isn't my work but the creator has kindly llowed me to use it as reference and as a base for my own model. When that one's done I'll adapt it for the Horus guard too. To answer your question, yes. That one will be a lifesize too.

Thatnks for visiting my blog buddy! It's been getting quite a few visitors lately. I'm glad you're one of them.

Glad to be one of them. With the amount of interest in pepakura growing, I would imagine that the number of visitors will just keep going up.

If you need more reference for this project check with The Boushh Builders Group. You may have already been there, but there might be some folks there that can help out if you havent.

    Thanks very much!

I'm getting closer now, I've been cleaning up the front and started to join it all up. I'm working my way around the back now too.

There are people who could model this better then me for sure but I'm keeping the fact that this has to be buildable at the end of the day too so compromises have to be made. Fortunately I'm managing to keep them to a minimum.

    Re: Boushh Helmet WIP

This program looks like it will help me build the costume for my kid. Question though, I downloaded the LE(free) version of this program, and also have the free version of PepakuraViewer2. How would you save the 3D file in Metasequoia as, so that it can be opened and printed out in Pepakura? It says the free version doesn't export to 3DS or OBJ. I'm really new to costume building. Thanks.

    Re: Boushh Helmet WIP

Well, Metasequoia has a native formet when saving your work. It's known as .MQO. This format opens in Pepakura too. Though you need Pepakura Designer, not the viewer to create these papermodel templates. That's free too but the problem with the free version is that you can't save your work. So you'll need an afternoon free to unfold your work AND print it straight away because you won't be able to save it. You will be able to export the 2D templates as a BMP image/images but they will have "SAMPLE" all over them in red. Though for our purposes I don't suppose that matters too much.

    I hope that helps.

As for Boushh, the modelling is all done and it's been approved by the friend I did it for. Smaller details have been left out as they're not needed at this point. They can be scratchbuilt later. Now it's time to unfold this in Pepakura.

    Here's a pic I did of it.

Yes! Thanks for the info...You answered questions that I would've just came back to ask! Seeing how the full Pepakura is under $40, I might just get that, since I'd constantly be interrupted (e.g. "Daddy, is it done yet?" ... "Not yet." ... "Daddy, is it done yet?" ... "Not quite." ... "Daddy, is it done yet?" ... "Yes. It's done!" ... "Liar!" Hahaha) Thanks again. And by the way, your helment here looks awesome!:thumbup

You're welcme buddy. The free version does have a tendancy to crash on occasion. Especially if working on something complex, which was very frustrating for me before I got the full thing.

    Good luck!

I think I've mentioned before but this was modelled for a friend to build. He'll be sending me pics as he goes so I'll post them here too. Unless he does first. I won't have the time to build this, at least not anytime soon.

    Re: Boushh Helmet WIP

    Morning guys,

Good news. Boushh is ready!! I couldn't sleep this morning so I thought I'd do something constructive rather than veg in front of the TV.

It's all unfolded ready to print now, the file will take 24 pages to print out. Though this may increase slightly later today as I'm thinking of adding some support to the helmet. This will help the card build hold it's shape while the resin outer coats are being applied. I may do them later and add them to the existing file.

Now for a slightly uncomfortable announcement. I've spent alot of time on this and origiinally it was going to be given away. However, I've been spotting some of my papermodel work being given out by others as if it was their own creation, also I've spotted a few ebay listings with my models for sale by others. This was not what I want at all.

So in future, all of my work is available at a price. Nothing to make me rich or break peoples banks. Just something to compensate me for the time I spend, and also as a sort of deterrent against the nasty little people out there from just downloading the work and then selling it on as their own.

I'm sorry about this but I need to try something. I'm not trying to let people down here, nor is it because I think my stuff is too good to be given away to this community.

If any members here are still interested in buying a copy of this helmet then you can PM me here or email me via the email link at my blog.

Here's a pic of the final unfolded model:
    mod6.jpg

Thanks for all of the support and compliments here, I appreciate them all.

    Hey Skip!

Great work and IMO (not that you need it) you are perfectly correct in your decision! You have very obviously put a LOT of work into these designs and should be charging for them!!! My main passion is music and I'd FREAK if someone was passing off one of my sample libraries or one of my bands tunes as their own! That is really low and congratulations to you for not getting down and for still being willing to put your work out there!

When I get some time and cash I'll be hitting you up for this design mate!

    Keep up the great work!

    Skip,

Looks great! I hate that folks have been claiming your stuff as their own. Why can't people just own up to the fact that they do not have the skills or the knowledge to create such things, or that they just flat out didn't do it but this person did? Give credit where it is due! It is just low to claim anyone else's work. At any rate, you'll be getting a PM at some point.

Thanks very much for the support guys. I appreciate it, I really do. Although most of my stuff will be for sale only from now on, I'd still like to give to this community seeing as it's given me so much over the years(I've been coming here long before I signed up), So I think I'll do something when I'm freed up that will only be available to TDH members or something.

I have no idea what it will be, but I'll thing of something.

BINGO. Very well said. If it wern't for guys and gals like Skip, I would not have been able to do the things I have been working on. Pepakura is AWESOME to use as a base to make props from.

Thanks very much buddy, I'm still going do more designs. I have some commission jobs, but I'm doing a few for myself too. If you like the Episode III Clone helmet then head over to my blog to see some pics.

As for the RC, I think I've mentioned that a friend is drawing up some plans for me of the helmet and armor. Once I have those I'll make a start. Lots to do while I wait for them though.

Great work. But as a rule of commerse, charging for your work to stop others from trying to make money on it is a lost model.

The only way to make others not make money from it, is to give it away free.

Now if you realized you think 'wow this is worth money' and want to get paid for it, thats another thing, and its your right entirely, but your model to 'deter copiers' is not a solid one.

By charging for it, you limit it to those that pay. Moving forward, others will have a wider base, as they can either sell it cheaper, or reach advertising avenues you can not, due to a price.

If you indeed want to 'thwart' the people copying/selling your work, make it widely known and available to any and every one interested free, then there is no need for some to buy it.

Much the way if you tried to sell alans templates at this point, you would be hard pressed for someone to purchase it. Because they are free.

That being said its nice modeling, and the fact it doesnt need to be tris and quads means its a lot easier to model than your standard 3d model, thus you have moved through this project very fast

Id love to see one of these glassed.

    Re: Boushh Helmet WIP

You see, you would think that no-one would sell something that was free elsewhere wouldn't you. However that is not always the case.

All of my previous work WAS free, making it easier for people to get it. The problem was that it was also easy for pirates to get it. This is a common thing in the papermodel community.

So, by selling my work I ensure that most of the people who come and get them are genuine. It's not about making money or I'd have higher prices.

I still offer some of my work for free, just not all of it. The Fett items I'm currently working on will be free to members here, the Halo pieces I'm doing and have done will/are free to members of the 405th forum. So if it were about money then why would I do that? I trust the members here not to abuse it by trying to sell the templates on.

As for making my work widely known. I may still be fairly new here when it comes to my contribution, but my papermodel designs are fairly widely known. That was part of the problem.

    Thanks.

I think what Stormrider is trying to say is that no one willpay for something that is being offered for free somewhere else...I believe that you've worked hard on these as I've been on your blog numerious times....in my experience, most people don't like to have to pay for templates as they still have the hard task of assembly...and sometimes that doesn't work out haha

    Re: Boushh Helmet WIP

I understood what he ws saying, however people were paying for something that was free when I first released my RG helmet file. I posted download links for it so people could have it free of charge.

Then I find it on Ebay, being sold and there were bids. People were willing to pay because on ebay, not everyone knew about it being free elsewhere.

I understand people having trouble paying for the file when there's a chance that they may not have the skill to complete the project. However the same can be said about model kits, or costume kits where the vac form or resin cast helmets have to be assembled. This is no different except the technique is different and requires more work.

People may have to pay for some of my work but they get the base for their helmets or armor, the hard work has been done. With time, effort and patience they can have a great looking costume piece cheaper than they may get it for if they bought a pre made outfit, and they can also say tht they made it themselves.

For those that think it isn't for them then that's cool, but people have been getting the files from me so I don't think that my choice was a bad one. You say that people don't like to pay for templates, however people DO pay for papermodels and this is no different because the base is essentially a card model. It's the fibreglass and filler that turn it into something else.

Why do I feel like I have to defend my decision here?

I'm not arguing with your decision because all-in-all its your hard work here. I was just interpreting what the previous guy was saying...ya...everyone would like to get it for free like the WOF templates, but it kind of sucks that something like that had to happen...I kind of find it stupid to bid on a file on ebay but...that is just me...I personally have no prob buying some from you because I love the stuff you got going and I've read about every entry in your blog from june and july. Like I said...it is just too bad that someone would actually sell the file itself...I can understand selling a totally finished helmet with your permission...but the file??? Wow....some people! I'm really looking forward to the finished Hayabusa helmet and the Anubis...more Anubis!!!

I follow ya now. Sorry. I guess I just rattled over it because in the past, I've always been happy to just share my stuff for free.

Thanks for visiting the blog. I try to keep it up to date. Anubis is defenitely one I'm going to get to, but that's a biggy so I'm waiting until I can commit the time to it.

Haha..ya I can only imagine how long that would take me to assemble, let alone do all the leg work you're doing! I've always been into egyptology so naturally Anubis is held in high regard! I've never had the chance to revisit the Stargate movie when I was old enough to enjoy it....really looking forward to your progress!

Im not arguing that you should or shouldnt sell your work. Im sure you put a lot of work into it. Im just pointing out that the model your using, if your really trying to stop the idiots from stealing/claiming it is not going to help your cause.

Post all of your documents for free. Put an add anywhere Job Bob is selling your templats, for 1/20th what he sells them for. Or virtually free. Just enough to cover the ebay fees.

If your looking for recognition, youll get it. if your looking to run them out of business, youll get it. Because there will be a point where it will not be worth their time to try to sell something thats free.

All in all, would you be mad if someone that took your design was distributing them for free? With your name? Without your name but without their name?

Personally, being a 3d artist myself, I understand why you would feel tiffed. But ultimately the only way to stop someone from selling your stuff, is to give it away.

I apologize if this or my previous post came off rude, it wasnt my intention. My point is, if someone wanted one of your models to build for themselves, they would have to purchase it. From you, or them. That leaves them in business with 50% of the market.

Even if they buy a copy from you, they can still resell it. You just make 1/xxxx of how many copies they sell.

    Re: Boushh Helmet WIP

I understand what you're saying but I'm going to stick with my decision for now. I do think it's worth the price too so I'm happy to continue, I have put time into them and I do think that a small price is Ok. As I said my prices aren't super high, I think they're reasonable. Though I still think you're missing the point. My work and other papermodels get abused like this BECAUSE they are free and easily accessable. You'll be surprised just how many people are still unaware of papermodelling and will pay because they don't know of the free original model.

Besides, out of the collection of costume related files I've created, only two of them at this time are for sale. As I've said, the Fett stuff I'm doing will be free to all, as well as the Halo stuff.

Only Boushh and the Royal Guard are for sale. No offense has been taken by what you've said, I just felt almost like I was being criticised almost for choosing to sell some of my work. It's cool, I understand your reasons now.

    Hey folks!

Thanks a million to Skip I got my Boushh done tonight... sorry for the bad pics, I think its the lighting in my bedroom. I might have made a few mistakes and I had bits left over (oops!) but this has been a FANTASTIC learning experience thus far for me - huge thanks Skip!

Anyhoo - on to the pics -

    And another -

    And finally -

The card I used is light-ish so the indents in the second pic will be sorted when reinforcing (I hope )

If resining, glassing and filler all go as smoothly as the build, I think I might have found a PERFECT remedy for living in a small country where materials are impossible to find!!!

Thanks again Skip!!! (sorry about the other thread - youd think I'd have a clue by now )

    Thanks folks!

I have to say - this is my first real build so Im learning about resin/fiberglassing - filler - everything. My point is this is REALLY fun and the encouragement here is FANTASTIC - really keeps me pushing on Thanks so much

Also - I hope you dont mind me posting these in your thread Skip? But as a plus - Im having so much fun I recommend EVERYONE pick up Skips templates!

So I did some outside strengthening with resin before taking on the inside glassing (which Im scared of but hey!) - decided to do it in parts as Im not used to resin so the first part (top took ages to dry as Id not used enough hardener) - from then on the resin hardened quick so these pics are just before the second coat -

This really added strength and the helmet MUCH easier to work on with a thin film of resin. Thing is the resin dries shiny? Is this normal?

So Im giving it one last coat of resin outside then on to fiberglassing the inside!!!

Again, thanks for all your good wishes folks!

Thanks Female-Fett. For my part in this at least.

Dave, it's looking swell bro! Oh, the resin will set shiny. At least it has for me on all of my builds. Don't be worried about the fibreglassing. I was for my first go too but it really isn't that bad. The hardest part is in the small areas, plan ahead before you start. Some areas will require the fibreglass to be cut to shape before you try to apply it.

It is good fun though, I found it really rewarding to see the helmet take shape before my eyes. I'm hoping to 'glass my Mando lid today and can't wait.

Yeah fiberglass can be hard, depending of your preparation. Don't rush anything, glue your cloth before resining and everything should look perfect

    Hey folks!

Thanks for the kind words!!! Ive just started my Masters Degree so time is getting VERY tight here

I do have an older update though but not a good one! This was my first build and as you can see the template construction seemed to go without a hitch. I rushed the fiberglassing stage and got air trapped between the fiber and strengthened paper - air bubbles... went on to bondo without checking (always in a hurry) and as it was also my first go at bondo I put too much on - I found it difficult to control so just lathered it on! So now I have half a solid helmet and half a squidgy mess... I dont know if its rescuable so Im back to the start...

I'll take some pictures this afternoon and perhaps someone might have a few ideas...
Im hoping it might be of help to someone else!

In the meantime I started again but Im doing the upper and lower sections in 2 parts. The intention is to glue the fiberglass to these 2 sections and ensure everything is straight BEFORE resining Most importantly, I think I just went too fast with each stage!

Sorry for the lack of updates, Im still really excited with this and happy to post my mistakes. Perhaps what I think is a disaster might not be so bad...

    Pics to follow!

    Re: Boushh Helmet WIP

Do you have a mouse sander? If you've used too much filler for the outer layer don't panic!

I did that on my first attempt at this sort of thing. Just sand it right back, you'll start to see the card underneath and that's when you stop. Try to follow the card underneath to sand it to the shape it should be. Fortunately Boushh is a pretty simple lid to sand back and you should be fine.

If you do decide to start over though, you just need to skim the surface with the filler. When you're sanding, card will start to show through and again stop there. Then build up a second layer to smooth it further, filling any dips or recesses from the first layer. That's how I did my custom Mando lid and it worked great! Too little is easier to work with than too much.

As for the air bubbles. That's an easy fix. Do you have a Dremmel or similar mini tool? Use the sanding bit, it looks like a drum/cylinder. Use that to sand through the fibreglass and to break through the bubble. Sand it smooth so that there's a patch of card that is no longer covered with fibreglass. Than once you've got rid of all the bubbles, re-fibreglass those areas, taking more time and care to avoid new bubbles. I also use generous ammounts of resin in these tight awkward corners so that the excess resin kinda forms into pools and fills up those recess areas. It prevents bubbles should the fibreglass itself not stay in position(which can happen if you've not trimmed the fibreglass into reqired shape. Remember, the inside of you lid doesn't HAVE to be pretty. So long as it's doing it's job. Unless you plan to decorate the inside too. In that case you need to take care fibreglassing to get the best finish. Cutting fibreglass to shape to fit properly into tight areas. I also use wodden cocktail sticks ur wodden BBQ skewers to press the FG into position in those pesky tight areas.

Small air bubbles aren't the end of the world but the big ones can cause problems.

Looking forward to the pics mate!!

    Hey Skip!

Thanks for the ideas! I do indeed have a mouse(ish) sander and looking over your post - things might not be as bad as I think... Ive attached pics below to explain my problems... hope this is ok with everyone?

Also PLEASE NOTE - these issues are with the fact this is my very very first full build and nothing to knock about the excellent templates!

OK so on with the state of the union: I gave this a quick coat of grey primer to make things a bit more uniform...

Firstly a general look - I think my issues arise from the fact that I put the complete template together, forgetting about the closed off areas that need fiberglassig BEFORE being attached to the helmet:

    ---

Secondly - the circled areas are parts where the air bubbles/unset fiberglass is causing warping. The arrow is to the area I'll have to remove as the top visor and 'snout' have no glassing support inside at all:

You might notice the colour change at the back of the neck... I started with Fiberglass cloth (darker) and changed to Fiberglass cotton - its easier to work with but I feel it caused some of the problems Im having with trapped air...
    ---

Third - The ear will have to come off as above, there is no support! Doh! The back of the head, has air bubbles so moves to the touch:

    ---

Fourth - Just a top view. Im not sure if it came out in the pic but as Skip said Some areas are down to almost the bare card - I think this top part is ok?

    ---

Next is just a back view. One side of the upper part is bondoed the one without the arrow has none. You might be able to see the arrow area is lower (and correct) while the opposite side is higher as it warped without fiberglass support:

    ---

On to - Other side. The unbondoed area needs Fiberglass reinforcing and the ear has to come off:

    ---

And finally, all the issues together. Working from the top - The top 'visor' part has no glass underneath so I might just remove that and re-do it. The actual area you look out is fine, just needs bondo. The unbondo'd side should be fine with more FG. Might just cut off the entire front as its just paper and the bottom rim parts should be ok to straighten with careful FG work...

    ---

    Ugly SlideShow

So what do you guys think? Looking again, Im not as sure as I was that it is a writeoff...

Anyhoo - Thank you all for the comments... again I cant express how much of a fantastic learning experience this is. As long as I can learn form my mistakes Im a happy bunny

    Thanks folks!

    Dave

    Re: Boushh Helmet WIP

I thought I'd add a note for the construction of the Boushh lid. Just the way I envisioned it when I designed the model and templates.

Build the main helmet all as one piece, then you'll be left with things like the ears, snout pieces and sensor that sits above the visor.

Build these parts and glue them into position on the main lid.

Now you'll have hollow areas inside these parts that you won't be able to access when fibreglassing. Not to worry, I encountered this problem when building my custom gauntlets. You need to carefully mark out where these pieces are on the inside of the lid. So you'll have a pencil outline showing you where to cut. The card should be thin enough to allow light to pass through and give you a general idea of where to mark these areas out.

Using a sharp, fresh blade on your knife, gently cut out the un-needed card from the main helmet where you marked out earlier.

If you've taken your time and got it right, you'll now have access to the pieces(ears, sensor above visor, and snout) when you come to fibreglass. Any excess card remaining can carefully be trimmed away first.

Anyone who's tried to build be Pepakura Fett gauntlets will have encountered this when building them and may have come up with this solution themselves or an alternative.

As I said, this is what I did for me Custom Gauntlets and it worked a treat. Providing you use plenty of glue to secure the parts and wait long enough for the to dry fully and set.

I know this may come a little late for some - Sorry McKenic - but I hope that it will prove useful for fixes or new builders.

McKenic, I think your lid can be fixed buddy. Too much filler is a pain but not the end of the world mate. You know how to reach me if I can help more.

This is probably something all of you know, but i thought id mention it.

Ive seen artists when I was in school build things out of cardboard (non corrigated) stock.

They then spray a watered down (or paint on) wood glue on it. It hardens it. A couple of coats and its REALLY HARD. It would work very well for a base for resin/bondo.

I love watching these. But you better wear a mask when you sand that bad boy

    Thanks folks!

Im beginning to see this as a challenge rather than a disaster... I'll be slow with the updates but promise to document and post them. Might be some help to someone!

    Thank you all again!

    Dave

    Good point, thanks Storm'.

I used the same glue for the card construction of my Mando lid. It works a treat especially if you laminate card together as I did to thicken the card.

I'd still recommend fibreglass though to toughen it further.

Looking forward to those updates Dave.

This is the thread that made me join this forum and begin researching and preparing for my new found hobby! Thanks Skip (and darn you Skip at the same time lol) Can't wait to get stuck in, this community seems great and very helpful looking forward to starting my first project with this helmet. Already PM'd you Skip about buying some of your pepakura files! Can't wait to see a finished version of this too.

    Oro

You're still here! It showed your last activity as a year ago so I was worried.

    I look forward to it.

    Thanks
