yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
I've sourced most of my parts already - Armour: KWDesigns, Belt/JP Harness - Seeker, Bucket/Jetpack: Cruzer all great guys who have answered countless PM's already.
My first questions regards the boots. I've posted some pics below and would like to get some advice. From my understanding Bo Katan wears a low-cut ankle shoe, not a boot.
http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/q...g2-500x500.jpg
if however it is indeed a boot then i've found this one from the same makers
http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/q...lg-500x500.jpg
let me know your thoughts. I will keep this thread up to date with progress shots.

Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
also, could someone give me the names of paints to use for BK? i need all the colours listed please so i know which ones to get
-
Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
I vote for the shorter ones. Her feet definitely look to have shoes and not boots. I can't help on a paint list though since I've never made the costume.
-
Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
Ashbash, Pretty sure Kevin designed his boot armor to go with Brahma boots. He says you can pick them up at Walmart for about $35.
-
yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
Hmm might see if I can get these online. Walmart isn't in Australia unfortunately
-
Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
Oh sorry.. i didn't even catch that. Thread name and all.. wow. Not one of my brighter moments! :lol
Here's the link to them online but you can probably find something else that would work if they won't ship to you.
Brahma Men's 4" Banjo Workboots: Shoes : Walmart.com
They look really similar to the first one you posted.
-
Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
Hey Ash, in your case, I think you would be better off using the low-cut ankle shoes rather than the taller boots you posted.
As far as the different paints used... I can't remember all the paints Mike "TK6682" used. We were rushing through it all so fast to get done on time for C6. Maybe he can chime in with that info.
Can't wait to see some WIP pics...

Thanks for your help so far :)

I'd use something similar to this if I were putting this costume together...

Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
Ash if you can't find the exact paints there is a great graffiti paint shop here in the Valley where I got some paints for my Fett. They are really helpful if you go in with colours they can help match.
Rehab Records its called. Also a DJ place that sells vinyls.
-
Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
Phantom - you had me at vinyls... so there.
I'll check it out over the weekend. Deltorn works with paints remember at Bunnings so I might talk to him as well.

The Palladium PALLABROUSE in "Vapor/grey" should work. http://damenschuhsale.de/files/tmp/p...12C00N-101.jpg
The Sole has this nice Metal-optic and you can Tint the canvaz easily

Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
so my next lot of questions are:
http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps678ec926.jpg
- - - Updated - - -
mainly that my arms are so skinny i can slide my arm right through without actually needing a cut/hinge.
Also, do i cut the entire ridge on the first pic?
-
Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
If you can fit your hand through them you could get away with a solid gauntlet. However, I think the biggest issue would be the screen accuracy. That seam is deliberately made wider to accommodate the cutting/sanding process.
If you take a look at this photo (compliments of arturoseeker):
Not_Mirror20 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
It appears to me that the seam is much thinner. If the wider gap doesn't bother you, i wouldn't see any issue with leaving them solid.
-
Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
Yes they should be cut as you show with the red/pink line.
After Christmas, I'll take some pics of mine to show the assembly.

-
Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
Ash, I had an after thought. Another benefit of going with hinged is this: if you go with a solid gauntlet, you end up with a shell that essentially clamps down in place onto your arm. The one primary benefit of that over a solid gauntlet is that in the likely event that you place foam or other spacing/centering material into the inside of the gauntlet, you don't have to worry about wrecking that material by sliding it on and off. If you've ever had armor such as this, you probably know what I'm talking about.
A good example is my TK armor. Inside the forearms, I have foam padding to center them as well as to help hold them up from sliding down. Since they are solid, this material has become worn by me sliding my hands in and out of them. A hinged gauntlet, in your case, would avoid this issue.
Just something else to think about. Let us know what you decide to do.. i'm interested to know.

yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
Bought the hinges yesterday.
I would have to agree with you as I'll definitely need to pad them out with foam. I'll post some progress pics up when we've done it
-
Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
next piece of the puzzle...
http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps034e2264.jpg
EDIT - I have bought some from FenixProps
-
yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
My concern with using a piano hinge on this is the armour is abs plastic. Not solid resin or fiberglass like what most Fett gauntlets are. Also, Ash does have rather small forearms so a slide one would be better suited.
As far as padding goes, I had I similar problem padding the forearms on my tk with padding coming out but I fixed this by using thinner PVC pipe insulator cut lengthways wrapped around and using a platiprime glue which is designed specificly for rubber and foam.
-
Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
my next question is the heel pieces. Is it just that little rectangular bit that i cut out? or does it extend out further than that?
http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/q...psc8dd8c69.jpg
This is TK6683's boots - notice the part I've highlighted in red (duplicate images used for the clarification) is that just part of the shoe or is that the actual heel armour part?

image used from TK6683's thread. (sorry if you want me to take it down. please PM me if you need me to and I will immediately)

Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
Don't cut it out. Use it as one piece. Just trim the edges to fit your boot.
-
Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
Don't cut out the rectangle off. Just trim the sides at an angle like this and glue to the shoe.

Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
Here is a quick video of my assemble Pre-Vizsla season 4-5 gauntlet.
The magnets are "Rare Earth 1/4 x 1/4 cylinders."
The very end of the video was cut off and I was about to say that you can add 2 small strips of velcro on each end near your wrist and elbow to help keep the open end closed once it is on your arm if needed.
PS Remember that Bo-Katan's Top detailed gauntlet parts are on the opposite side as Pre-Vizsla's. And Bo-Katans top covers need to have the 2 small side circles filled in and made smooth.

Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
To attach my armour to my suit I'm using a combination of magnets and Velcro. I'll let you know how i go.
The reason I didn't go with press studs as it will eventually snag the fabric of the suit. I making the magnets removable also. I'll upload pics when I've finished frantically sewing

If you want ABS hinges and a locking mechanism this is something I have been making for a while for other vacformed gauntlets. Basically its just like a regular hinge just thicker and will simply glue on with ABS cement, with the plus that they are adjustable.
Let me know if you want some ash I can just post them to you. Standard piano hinges are a pain in the backside.

Interesting, I just thought they all stayed on the whole time, just under different lighting you would notice more. How are you doing this btw? have you got appropriate colour buttons? because trans clear, red and white lego 1x2 tile are just about the right size and easy to source, and will stick to your abs gaunts because lego is abs.

Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
Hey, how much did you want for them? (Bo has killed my savings)
-
Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
Just buy me a glass of bubbly next time you see me
Do you have all the other thingies for your gaunts?
-
Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
still working out the knife (so jealous yours will extend/retract) and those disc thingies on the other one. I got all the darts and stuff (came with the kit)
a glass or two of bubbly it shall be :) and I'll even share one with you. We met briefly at Armageddon 2012. Not sure if I can attend this year as I might be going to Sydney instead.
Are you coming to Dreamworld troop?
-
Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
Not sure about dreamworld and if I go, I will probably bring my Legacy mando as my Bo will not be finished by then and Im a little over my Rav.
Your costume looks awesome btw, I really love your flightsuit colour. Cant wait to see it finished.
Anyway I realise the latch things may not make much sense in that picture so I took some more tonight, these are on my legacy gauntlets which are vacformed. I used to have velcro but it kept on coming off so I designed these:
open, pin out
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-x...0/IMG_0107.JPG
Closed, pin pushed in:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-6...2/IMG_0112.JPG
You align different holes to adjust.
There is no need to have a hinge on the opposite side in ABS guants because you can just flex them open that little bit to push your hand through kinda like a bracelet. Hope that helps
-
Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
Hey Ash, did you have any issues with shaping the gauntlet caps to fit on top of the gauntlets? I'm looking at mine and, as they are formed, it looks like I will have to grind down past the top of the gauntlet cap to get the sides low enough to match up to the top of the gauntlet. So, as you're looking at the curved area that you have to cut/sand out of the gauntlet cap to make the entire cap sit flush, all the way around, on the gauntlet, the top of that curve will bottom out past the side/vertical area and into the flat area where the lights/etc are.
How did you shape that area? Can you post up some pictures?
Kevin, any luck with the video? I'm still not able to load it using the link you posted above.
Thanks,
Daryl

Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
Looking great :), good work! I am also making a bo Katan costume and also bought my armor from KWdesigns, but its my first time costructing an armor so i am Little uncertain with the gauntlets also, aprilstorm how much do you take for your ABS hinges or does velcro tape work well also? I dont want to break the plastics. Ashbash what is the name of the magnets you are using to your suit?
-
Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
Hi Ash, I trimmed the bottom of each one a bit and then we stuffed a padded bra. The reason we stuffed was to get the undershirt to rise up to the inside of the top of each cup so that the diamond piece floats at the same level as the cups. This worked out great. Otherwise, the diamond will be down lower in between the cups. Hope this helps.
-
Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
Ok all I have one question and I hope some one can help us PLEASE. Can anyone tell me is it a silver or gray for Bo's armor. I am almost ready to paint but can't figure this last puzzle out to this armor. Thanks in advance for the help.
-
Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
Definitely grey... BUT I put a slight coat (and I mean hold the can very far away) with silver and it gives it a really nice sheen :)
-

Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
Hi :) what airbrush do you use i like your bodysuit
-
Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
I don't know the make or brand/model of the airbrush as I used a friends airbrush but as long as you use one that's meant for fabric paints you should be fine. If you can't get fabric paint, use an acrylic paint mixed with a textile medium which helps set the paint into the fabric

I'm looking into getting some smaller gauntlets for my tiny arms and also a neat headpiece and wig like TK6683 has done. Gotta find an appropriate wig though :/

-
Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
Nice work there:)...how did you attach the thigh holsters to the suit ?... are they just on velcro or do you fit a strap round your leg inside the flightsuit?...Im thinking due to the weight / presence of a gun .
-
Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
I'll get a pic of it later but I essentially added 2 strips to the inside V area of the thigh armour. This is enough to hold it in place without the strapping but the strapping is in all reference pics so I put it there as well.

Re: yet another Bo Katan! This time it's an AUSSIE!
I used chalk pastels for the weathering but my video will explain the whole process. Getting it as close to the animation as possible was my priority. I'm a graphic designer/fine artist so I'm a perfectionist when it comes to paint/colour/effects. I'll do a video tutorial once this weekend is over (being May the 4th and all) we have a major event on and I'm doing all my costume clean-ups/repairs/inspections so they look snazzy for the public.
