    Aug 4, 2014, 10:06 PM - Flight suit questions #1

I know this has been visited a few times on the forums but so far everything I found link wise is no longer available. This is my first build and I want to get everything right. I looked into this site for a charcoal grey unitard with a short sleeve over shirt from the following company:

IN STOCK Bal Togs Long Sleeve Mock Neck Unitard (BT 8815 IN/1855 IN)

    2-Tone Short Sleeve Top (BT 8304 2-tone)

However, it doesn't seem to be quite what would work for the 501st requirements. Thoughts? Am I on the right track?
Does anyone out there have a direction that I should look? I have searched for charcoal grey underarmor but there is nothing that matches and gloves are not the same color. I have thought about dying everything.

Guidance would be wonderful. I am lucky to live in the same town as Brandon from Eternal Armory. He is helping me with the armor parts. I still need the belt and helmet which I think I have a lead on. So far the worst part has been the flight suit!! Please and thank you!!

if you're looking for a FS that is similar to the standard Mandolorian FS like Boba/Jango, then I'd locate a maker here on the board, Arkady, about a custom color. If you're looking for more like under armor material, I'd post this question on the Mando Mercs page as you'd probably get more insight there.

First off...Brandon is a very cool guy!

But no, unfortunately those wouldn't do for 501st clearance. I'm in the midst of a Bo build for the Mrs. on the BHG site currently and the flightsuit is by far and away the most difficult piece to fabricate thus far. The solution I came up with is to purchase spandex material and have a custom suit made by someone versed in making dance costumes. Ours isn't complete yet, but we're getting it spot-on.

Thank you for the advice. The more I looked into it the more it just did not seem to fit with the specs. I have a feeling my sewing machine will be getting a workout very soon. I have scoured the fabric shops in town for the material and it's either super shiny or not the right color. So it looks like this might be the best option for me.

syllander- Thanks for the tips. Everything in the specs shows it as a more spandex type material similar to under armor. I will head over MM and see if anyone has an idea!

Hi there! I'm building a Bo myself and sewed my own suit. I began sewing only a year ago, but did a lot of research on this costume as well as sewing in general. I would definitely try to find a fabric that has stretch to it--4 way stretch has more stretch than 2 way, but 2 way can still work if sewn properly. Having a serger and sewing machine to sew my suit made my life easier, but you do not need a serger to do so. A stretch stitch on a regular machine works just fine. Just be sure to adjust your machine's settings so it's ready to sew stretch. Using a stretch needle also helps. I created my pattern from clothes that I own and began by sewing in scrap fabric (old bed sheets). This helped me to visualize the finished product. Sewing your own suit is entirely possible-- but If you still have reservations, I agree with EQdizzle in that you should find a seamstress to help with this part of the build. Good luck!

Novenas- Thank you for the tips! I did find a pattern for a suit that I can modify. I think it is time for a serger.
This is the pattern that I found:

That pattern looks good (I assume you are referring to A). All you would need to do is construct it without the front seam. The seam in the back should be hidden by the back plate, belts, jet pack. You may also want to extend the turtleneck and sew an outside seam on the legs (check the CRL for this). One more suggestion...buy way more material than you think you will need...

A serger is a great tool. Find one that is easy to thread. The one I bought had tutorials on how to use it online via YouTube. That helped me immensely!

With lots of help I found a wonderful seamstress in my state (thanks eqdizzle). It will be better in the long run to get the right fit. If anyone is curious I got my fabric from

    steel

    The item # is: slx-030

Once everything is put together I hope to start posting build photos.

My husband and I found some charcoal grey pieces from www.cuddlduds.com they also have gloves that match. We are getting two long sleeve shirts and cutting one to make the short sleeved one.
