    May 5, 2014, 7:04 PM - Paint Colors #1

Looking through various threads for a few weeks I've noticed many people used different color paints for their HiC, I'm looking to create a thread based on the various paints people have used (possibly with pictures). If you painted your HiC and want to contribute please post the paint color (Front, Side Panels, Greeblies, etc) and I will keep this post updated as a reference point.

Some paint colors people have used.

    Primer:
    Rustoleum Automotive primer

    Box Colors:
    Krylon Metallic Silver
    Dark Charcoal Grey in Gloss
    Rustolem 7519 Stainless Steel

    Front Panel Colors:
    Krylon Metallic Silver
    Satin Metallic Nickel
    Rustoleum 7277830 Metallic Matte Nickel

    Volvo Panel Colors:
    Aluminum

This is going to be a very interesting thread!. I am about to paint my HIC and I really do not know what colours to use. It looks like there are different versions for ESB and ROTJ, and even different paint schemes for the panels in ESB depending of the pictures available (black / gray panels).

I think this is a great idea. Can you possbly post pictures of what each type of paint looks like on the HIC? That would make the thread more valuable I think.

Hi Guys! I just finished my HIC http://www.therpf.com/f79/my-hic-bui...9/#post3475456 and here are the paint codes I used.

    All of it is Rustoleum...

Block Primer = 249418 Black Sandable Automotive Primer (4 coats, hand sanded between each coat with 1000 grit paper)
Panel Primer = 249088 Flat Grey Primer

Block = 7519 Stainless Steel (also applied 4 coats, hand sanded between each coat with 1000 grit paper)

Han = 7277830 Metallic Matte Nickel

    Volvo Panels = 7715 Aluminum

Back of Block = 7776 Flat Black

Shiny Metal Greeblies = 7718 Chrome

Small dented greebs (nipples) = 7715 Aluminum (If you look closely at the small parts between the turn signal arrows on the dash boards, you will notice that they not all dark grey.)

Wider greebs (nipples) = 7519 Stainless Steel

    U Clips = 7519 Stainless Steel

    Rings = 7718 Chrome

Black wash = Acrylic Black with a 1 to 5 ratio of paint to water. (Wait 7 minutes and wipe away excess with a wet towel. I applied 4 washes to get it right and then took a photograph in the dark with a flash to get a real wash exposure to ensure accuracy. Your eyes play tricks on you when the block is on it's back and you can't get away from it to see the entire wash. I actually took the photos from a 16 foot ladder looking down on the block.)

When I painted the block, I used steel wool and 60 grit sand paper after the final coat of stainless steel. I literally pressed the steel wool into the paint at the top of the block and walked down the side in one complete motion. This put a constant line pattern in the paint and allowed the black wash to fill micro grooves in the paint giving it that "actual stainless steel" look. The paint is stainless steel color but real stainless has small black lines in it from the rolling process. I wanted my block to look weathered; like real metal.

Any way, here are the pics of the completed product Hope you like it. I am having issues uploading so I will put then in a separate comment via Tapatalk.

    Thanks,

    Warp

Here’s my HiC, which I just finished recently (full write-up of my build and wall mount). I went with the ESB color scheme. Here are all the paints I used.

The entire build was primed with several coats of Rust-Oleum Automotive Flat Gray Filler Primer (SKU 249279):

Which was then given a wash with 10:1 water to Plaid Delta Ceramcoat Charcoal acrylic (SKU 024360202W) mix, with a little dish soap mixed in. I used a large brush and let it sit for a few minutes before wiping it away from everywhere but the valleys. Then I went back and used AMACO Rub ’N Buff silver leaf (SKU 76370K) to get all the highlights:

Nice! I like the hand painted clip heads. I may do that as well.

I ended up filing those bolt heads off the clips and put real screws through mate. I think it adds a lil bit of realism.
