My Lifesize Han Solo in Carbonite Project - 1st Attempt * Picture Intensive *

Looking good. The steel really makes the panels "pop".

Yeah, I had a real dilemma when it came to painting the panels. I went back and forth with painting them, not painting them.......but ultimately it did not look right unpainted.

I think the paint gives them a real industrial, mechanical look. I am very pleased with how they turned out.

I finally had a chance to work a bit more on HIC and completed the LEDs for the first panel. I used a flashing red, steady yellow, and steady green; it looks pretty cool! This really adds a nice touch and brings it to life. The LEDs are powered by 4 AA batteries mounted inside the cabinet.

I could not figure out how to embed the video, so here is the link (sorry for the poor quality):

Here is a quick photo of where the battery box is mounted.

I really went back and forth deciding on wether or not to hide the switch behind the panels with the battery box, or to just add a switch to the panel itself. Although not screen accurate, I went with adding the switch to the panel itself. I think people will get a kick out of pressing the button as if it were a functional part of the panel, I know I did!

Also, I think I am going to daisy chain a few lights off the one battery pack. I hope to get at least 3 more lights off the one pack, if there is enough power.

A few people have emailed me inquiring about the LED wiring sequence, so, I am just going to post it here. Here is my very "rude" drawing.

As you can see I bypassed the negative wire of the blinking red LED directly to the battery box and last LED. If you daisy chain all them directly and do not seperate the blinking LED, then all the LEDs will blink. I wanted the yellow and green to stay steady, and since the blinking LED is first in the chain, this is how it was bypassed.

I hope that helps some the "less electronically inclined" members like myself.

cool. What size battery and what voltage are each of the leds? thanks

The battery box is a four AA box. The blinking red is a 5mm, 3.0 volt, 35mA (880 mcd) LED. The steady green, yellow, and red are 3.0 volt, 20 mA LEDs (these come in a pack of 20 for about $3.00, it's a great deal).

All the parts can be found at Radio Shack; here are the item numbers:

Blinking Red LED - #276-312
Steady Red, Green, Yellow LEDs - #276-1622
LED Holders - #276-079
Battery Holder - #270-391
On/Off Switch - #275-617
(Also buy some small guage wire, comes in a 3 spool pack; red, black, and green coated)

Be careful not to hook up the steady LEDs without a daisy chain, if you do, they will burn out immediately. The four AA batteries are too powerful for just one LED. I learned that the hard way, several times, I probably blasted through half a dozen LEDs before getting this right!

I think I am just about done! Today I finished the last of the LED lighting. I had to do 2 switches, the max on each power source was 3 LEDs. I could not figure out how to chain more LEDs together; however, the fact I got this far is a miracle!

I also put the clear gloss acrylic coat on, I have about 3 coats on it.

Here is the video with both panels lit, sorry for the poor lighting again.

I also spent allot of time trying to get my mini home theater done. It will be all Star Wars themed and will have 4 seats. I am building a raised box so the 2 rear seats will sit higher. Here is a peek.

(joker voice) Where does he get those wonderful toys?

One little addition, I bought some gray material that my mom is going to make as cutrains for the rear of the room. That way you won't see the closet doors.

As soon as I get HIC moved in, I am going to mount a blue light that will illuminate the cabinet.

Thanks for looking.
