Hi, here's a quick update of my second run of vac-formed goggles.
I did a bit of revision on my former and these are Orange or as orange as I could get them!
I'd have preferred them a little darker, but the Acrylic doesn't seem to take anymore colour...

I've got another 2 done and ready to go. I think better start my own build up soon!!

Hi thanks! I was hoping to have one painted by now, but have been busy with my Fett lid & my Dalek!
    Still it's in primer

Another touch of primer and reflat and it'll be ready for a silver ground coat.

Thanks! At least I know roughly what the end result is going to look like. Here's the link to ywingfighters build (which you've already probably seen)

Yes my Dalek is a 70's Genesis of the Daleks build. All the hemisphere's are built and he's well on his way!

    Hi all,
After the priming and a good flatting I tested out my new paint gun this weekend and gave it 2 coats of silver as a ground. Then I'll get an idea for where I want the scratches and work my way out (like a Fett lid build up) with a grey next.

I got a cheap Airbrush as well as my touch-up paint gun so I shall see how I go!

    Re: Y-wing / A-Wing helmet ROTJ scratchbuild

I thought I'd post a quick update of the progress so far. After the silver, I applied a light coat of grey primer, some light brown on top of that. Followed by some white with masking up of areas for chips and scratches.

    web-2-jpg

    web-jpg

It's going to get one more of white then its on to the top section for maroon and grey.

Some of the chips will probably get hidden, I'll see how I feel. While it will be pretty close to the Y-Wing lid in Jedi I don't feel I have to follow the distress to the exact letter. I really like some of the chips on the edges! Looks like it's been bouncing around in a cockpit!

    Re: Y-wing / A-Wing helmet ROTJ scratchbuild

Thanks! Here's a little more progress...

Instead of me using an airbrush for the red (and white) I used a touch-up gun. Just thought I'd mention it incase anyone was wondering!
Masking up and adding red (in 2-3 attempts until the colour looked right!)

    web-3-jpg

    web-4-jpg

Masking removed and the addition of the silver/grey band on the top.

    web-5-jpg

    web-6-jpg

Next up (later hopefully) I'll be breaking out my airbrush and adding matte black to the lower areas and where the buttons go.

The whole thing will of course be getting a lot of "carbon scoring" later!

    Re: Y-wing / A-Wing helmet ROTJ scratchbuild

After a bit of masking up it was time for the addition of some matte black in the lower back area and grooved section...

    web-7-jpg

...after plenty of reference checking I masked the front area for the yellow band.

    web-8-jpg

The yellow covered better than I thought it would actually!

    web-9-jpg

Without the masking it looks something like this...

    web-10-jpg

It's still wet in this picture so the masking fluid is still yet to be removed. I'll do that tomorrow when it's dry.

That's where I'm up to for now!

    Re: Y-wing / A-Wing helmet ROTJ scratchbuild

    Hi all,
    Still following? Good!
With the yellow band done it was time to plan and mask the green.
A 50/50 mix of greens here running diagonally. Although not 100% screen perfect, it looks pretty good I think.

    web-12-jpgweb-11-jpg

Next to the green (decal) logo on the right (as you wear it)
The strange thing is, and I shouldn't be surprised at this, but it's really feeling like its seen a lot of action already!
Weird, but that's the effect we're all trying for with the Fett lids too...

    Re: Y-wing / A-Wing helmet ROTJ scratchbuild

Thanks! I think its going pretty well...

After a look at some reference I thought I'd get the side insignias in blue and green done...
I find it easier to slice some masking tape than buy some "go faster tape" (stripes)!
    100-jpg101-jpg

With 'em about in the right place it was time to commit with paint.
    102-jpg103-jpg

I can see why all 6 Fett lids from ESB and ROTJ are different! Trying to exactly replicate scratches and marks is time consuming!

    Stay tuned!

    Re: Y-wing / A-Wing helmet ROTJ scratchbuild

After a moderate amount of painting it was time to add the greeblies. With some trial fitting they looked OK and didn't need too much preparation.
    g1-jpg

I did decide to epoxy the audio knob (Yamaha engine cover) to a bolt and drill the disc. This way I could avoid the blob of epoxy that appears on the real thing!

    g4-jpg
    g2-jpg

The other side was pretty straight forward too...

    g3-jpg

Next up? The red text I think!

    Re: Y-wing / A-Wing helmet ROTJ scratchbuild

    Hi all!
In between my 2nd oil painting of Dumbledore, I've got on the case with the helmet again!
The text was the next section. I was mulling the creation of the front and side texts.
Either using a transfer, painting it freehand, a stencil or just plain masking up again.
In the end I went with masking up with strips of tape.

    y-october-jpg y-october-2-jpg y-october-3-jpg

There's a couple of minor spots to touch up by brush, but in all looking OK!

I've still some paint mixed for the blue/red winged logo on the other side.
I'm also considering a run of decals for the front "Radio Bolinas" sticker.
Once that's done its a dusting over to grubby the whole thing up...

Feeling quite happy with the progress!

    Hi,
Only another small update but I figured I'd upload! Especially as I'm trying the goggles in it for the first time since I've started painting it!

    dscf4750-sm-jpg dscf4748-sm-jpg

I'm trying with the idea of some Radio Bolinas decals for the front too..

My first y-wing helmet has just landed in the US, so that's another one out there!

    Until next time,
    Rich
