My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Hey guys,
I love TCW, and I particularly enjoyed the episode: Trespass!! The episode was a great one but what made it more enjoyable was this:
http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...Snap_clone.jpg
http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...107d4817_o.jpg
I've been wanting to post pics of this sooner but I wasn't happy enough with how it was looking until now. I'd say I've been working on this for about 2-3 weeks? It's not finished yet but may I present to you, my Snow Clone lid!
http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...0Clone/49a.jpg
http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...0Clone/51a.jpg
http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...0Clone/52a.jpg
This is the second shot of paint it's seen, the first was to highlight spots that needed filling. This second coat is so I can see the surface to check the dome.
It's a two part helmet right now consisting of a face plate and the dome. The face slides into the dome and will be fixed above the visor inside the brow. I've rough cut the holes that will eventually make up the breath filters(I think that's what they are), the three strips at the mouth and will tidy those up more tomorrow.
I'm just waiting on some new supplies and tool part so arrive in the morning before I crack on.
I'm not sure what else to say right now so I'll leave you guys to have a look and let me know what you think.
Thanks! :)
***UPDATE***
The price again is $190 plus shipping per kit, you'll get the face plate, dome, 2xaerators and the three small parts for the mouth vent. The general word was that people would be happy to suply their own cowl material so that's not included nor is visor material. Though I do have vinyl here so if some people want a cowl it can be done until my vinyl runs out. PM me for info.
Please post here if you're interested or want to order yours now so we can build a new list of interested folks. smile.gif

Thanks very much buddy, good to hear from ya! :)
Yeah, it's come a long way in the last week!

Well, I've noticed over on AA that the armor is already in the works? So I'll just be doing a helmet.
Thanks guys! :)

Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
It's looking very clean and nicely proportioned, well done :) to my eye, it looks as of the neck/cowl area could come down a little lower but, I see you did mention it's in two parts so it's probably just how it's sitting in the picture. Either way it looks great, get a cowl mocked up, tape a visor in it, and post some more pics!
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
You mean on the dome? That was lower originally but it needed trimming as it was too low and kept hitting my neck/shoulders. I trimmed an inch off it and it still rubs my neck/shoulders but that's without some padding to lift it a little.

Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
I took these but they aren't the best quality. They show the drop of the skirt(that's what I call it anyway, what's the general term??) and how close it is - minus padding - to my shoulders.

Sorry about the vid quality, it was taken on my phone. It gives a slightly better vies than the pics though.

Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Very cool, can't wait to see it complete. :) Are you going to make it Rex's helmet, or just a standard-issue clone version?
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Probably a Rex!! Although I have a pic here somewhere of another Snow Clone with red paint markings. I think it's from an online comic?
But I'll prbably stick with Rex.
Also, regarding the skirt on the dome. I've widened the flare on it this morning. It wasn't quite right so it flares out by 10mm more on either side and an extra 6mm on the back.

Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Thanks very much buddy! I appreciate it!

Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Faceplate for the hard surface, and cowl for the flowing fabric or rubber
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Thanks bro, though I was referring to the lower half of the dome. I call it a skirt but what's that generally called?
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Nice work the proportion and shape look excellent.

Hey Skip you gonna look into some kind of white marine vinyl...
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Absolutely Gav! I need to find something suitable for it. I'm gonna hunt through some old old sheets or pillow cases in the week to do some mock-ups and try and get a working pattern for the COWL. LOL! My wife will love me for that! :D
As for new pics, I did some work on the dome COWL today to make the flare more prominent. Here are the pics of the new version. Looks much better now. Still some tweaks here but it's getting there.

Thanks! Alas, I'm only working on the lid. Though I've seen Snow Clone armor being worked on over at Animated Army. ;)
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Oh, the skirt is in fact part of the dome. Sorry, I didn't interpret your initial question properly. Doh!

Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Lastnight I added a trim that goes around the cheeks and visor. it's quite subtle in some of the screen grabs but defenitely there. It's in need if a little filling and sanding now but it adds a nice bit of depth to the faceplate.

trim - check (I didnt even see that one! yeesh)
good progress skip. thats it isnt it?
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Mostly. :)
Gav pointed out a small problem with the flare that I'll do today and Brian/StormtrooperGuy pointed out an error with the three strips on the mouth. Again I'll do that today. :)
Then some small detail parts and I. Think that's it!!

Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
I think this is turning out awesome so far. I just have one thing to point out and i hope you dont mind. I like getting other peoples thoughts on my builds just because sometimes as a builder, i look at a prop that im working on for hours on end and i tend to overlook certain things.
Anyways, i noticed that the T visor on the helmet has a certain curve, as well as the outer helmet along the brow line. I thought for a bit that it was an illusion because of the angle of the shot but after looking at a few pics, im not so sure that it is.
http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/i...d84d7175_o.jpg
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
I'm afraid it's the angle buddy. I have a few screen grabs here that show them as straight. Particularly the brow line on the dome.
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
If that was the case, then the same would apply to a standard CW clone helmet, right? I'll let the pics do that talking........
http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/i...RE_Logo_21.jpg
http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/i.../snowclone.jpg
If it was a visual illusion, then the same would apply to your helmet and as you can see in this picture, it does not.
http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...20Clone/65.jpg
You know, im only trying to help. Giving out the same help i ask for when im doing a helmet build.
BTW, you can call me EVO or Andy (Buddy?)
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Skupilkinson like what your doing great job.:thumbsup
i'd have to agree with Evo on the curve, based on the pic's.
Jason
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
The illusion DOES apply to mine. ;) If you look at this face plate at different angles it changes the whole look! Trust me, I modelled this thing in 3D before starting a build. ;)
Because the face is curved AND slopes outward the angles change a whole lot just by altering your viewing angle slightly.
Look at these earlier pics of mine all taken from different angles. Please not, my visor and the cheek lines have not been altered at all during the build so what you see in this compliation is how the visor cutout still looks today.
http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o.../CurveComp.jpg
I've highlighted how the lines can appear curved in one pic yet curved in another.
Look at the 3D wireframe pic. Straight lines from the front view, yet curved from the side.
http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...one/Image5.jpg
Viewing angle and perspective distortion play a big part in how this faceplate looks. They are straight lines but wrapped around a curved object.
I apprecite the help and I'm not offended by you asking or sharing your thoughts. It's just that since starting the build and 3D model I've come to understand the Snow Clone lid quite well.
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
I still have to say its a curved visor, especially after seeing the last few pics that you posted.
It doesnt change the fact that you are very talented. That DC17 that you built in another thread is a work of art. Pep files are great for sizing helmets and using them as a base but sometimes i think that the files dont show all the right angles. When it comes to building something that has a lot of geometry i think it works great but when curves are thrown into the mix it gets more complicated.
I guess what im trying to say is, dont rely entirely on your pep files; use the force!
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Morning Andy,
You're absolutely right about relying entirely on the Pep base. That's something I avoid(and something I always tell people not to do) and actually, the original visor from the pep base was filled in so I could redo it. It was close but not quite right.
I've been looking through my WIP pics here and even took a rubbing of the visor and cheeks and you ARE right. :) There are slight curves in the "T" on the visor. Gently sloping down towards the center. I even felt a little silly after the realisation because I was trying to prove the lines were straight but I just proved myself wrong. LOL!
Hey, thanks very much for the compliment on my DC-17! I appreciate it. :)
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
the sharing of honest, constructive criticism will only make all of us better. heck, i'm re-making my rex helmet AGAIN based on a suggestion from marcello about using black resin for the last couple of layers!
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
True. :)
Today I'm gonna be sorting thise three strips out on the mouth. ;) Thanks for that Brian. :)
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Just a little update guys. More tidying up after adding that trim. Fixed the three strips on the mouth too, they look much better now. Tomorrow I'm going to hopefully finish off the faceplate and try experimenting with the cowl!

Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
nice what are you using for the dome ? and what is everything made of? Give us a little insight into the madness/genius
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Thanks,
It started out as a Pepakura model that I designed for the project. I modelled the faceplate and dome in 3D, then unfolded it using Pepakura.
Though the card build wasn't bad, the lid has gone through many changes along the way to get it more accurate. Both the dome and faceplate have been modified along the way.
http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...one/Image7.jpg
http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...%20Clone/8.jpg
The last few days have been spent getting a rough pattern for the cowl. I think I've nailed it but I need to make a few more mods to the faceplate before I know for sure.
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
looking good.
maybe getting ahead of myself but,
what material will you be using for the cowl.
(some kind of vinyl or leatherette).
Jason
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
I'll be using a vinyl material. Just after I finish this cowl prototype. ;) It's looking good so far.

Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Who's doing the teasing?? LOL! I don't have any pics yet. The cowl was fitted but then I took it off again without taking proper pics. The ones I do have are a little rough and nothing I want to post.
I've been busy making(hopefully) final mods to the faceplate and finishing the dome ready for final primer. Once it's all one colour again I'll take proper pics for you guys. ;) I HOPE Mojo is right. :)

Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
only joking, i like what i'm seeing anyway. Mojo i'll take your word for it.:thumbsup

It was aimed at Mojo! LOL!

Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
This is awesome, well done, do you have plans to make the entire suit? or is the helmet where it ends ?!
I guess you have enough time to finish it before any snow fall in wales, well you could troop up snowdon but its a heck of a walk for a photo :D
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
I'd like to do the whole costume but probably by sourcing out soft and hard parts from elsewhere rather than build my own armor for instance.
LOL! Yeah, it's quite a distance from my house to the top os Snowdon! :)

lookin very nice mate. Like the mods to the faceplate.
cowl looks good too (oops was I not meant to say taht? ;P)

Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Oi!!! Pack it in you cheeky sausages! :D
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Ok guys. As promised, here are the update pics of the Snow Clone!!!!!
I've give the whole thing a coat of white primer this time to try and give a better idea of how it'll look when painted up. I also used two card discs to simulate the aerators until I get those back from my buddy who's going to turn them on a lathe for me. ;) Also, the visor is black card for now, just for appearance' sake.
Don't pay too much attanetion to the bottom of the cowl. That part of the design is yet to be finalised as I've mainly been focusing on the way it fits over the snout of the face plate. I think it's looking really good. The first attempt was Ok, but I think I've nailed it now. I'm only using a bed sheet(don't tell the wife! LOL!) so I can easily make alterations along the way without wasting vinyl.
The dome and face plate are still two seperate parts, hence the masking tape holding them together for the pics. They'll also be cast this way too. ;)
I thought about just using this build as my costume lid for a while but due to the added weight from modding the dome it's rather heavy now. So, this will be going to Mojo-Fett, a buddy of mine who'll be moulding and casting it for me. We discussed gel coat followed by fibreglass. I'm really looking forward to that!!! Now, I've had a few replies and PM's asking if I'll be kitting this?? I said then that I'd like to but that I wasn't sure what would be happening but now I know it's going to be moulded and cast for my own costume, I can now say that if the interest is out there for one of these then I'll be happy to arrange extra lids to be cast. ;) It's still early days for prices but as soon as I know I'll post either here or in a new seperate interest thread. ;) I have a few ideas for a kit so it should be good.
Well, I think that's about it?? Please feel free to offer any thoughts! :)

Thanks bro!! Though it's not finished yet. ;) I have Mojo working on a lathe turned aerator to mould and cast, a final pattern for the cowl using Marine vinyl, a few minor bits to fix and then see what the interest is for an actual kit!
See how it all goes. :)

Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
I've really enjoyed reading this thread but one little thing keeps bugging me according to the reference pic it looks like the face plate should be flush with the brow of the helmet. Almost like the dome and face plate were one solid piece minus the flair in the helmet. I could be wrong. I hope that makes sense. Either way this is one awesome build.
-

Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Yeah, I thought that at first too. Though after studying various pics, and focusing on the temples you can see that the face plate isn't flush with the dome. At least, that's my interpretation. :)

I wouldn't think it would be flush. It should be two helmets, an inner and outer. But, I still can't figure out really what the CW guys are trying to do with this design, not how I would have done it. THOUGH, you are doing a fantastic job and I am very impressed and I will want one!:thumbup
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Yeah, I was talking to Mojo about the design of it the other day. I first thought that the face plate could be fixed to the dome to make the two parts one lid after the kit is done. Though Mojo came up with an idea of using the inner piece from a hard hat, the adjustable part that fits your head? To use that and fix it to the faceplate so you'd be able to keep the dome seperate from the face plate. Then once you have the face plate on, you can just slide the dome down over it???
Another idea that we haven't fully explored yet but I may give that a go when I get a cast back.
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
This has been a great build to read. Well done, If I ever get around to casting copies of my CW helmet, I'd love to trade you at some stage.
:cheers

Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Whoa, that is sweet. Fantastic work :)
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
the only thing i noticed out of place was on the "chin" area, the material semed to bow or curve out more, almost like pillowing or seams on a car seat
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
You're right about that. That can easily be chieved with a thin layer of padding. I forget the name of the stuff now but I used it to pad my flack vest for my custom Mando.
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Skupilkinson that Snow Clone is one sweet Helmet and ive never seen them before not seen the clone wars cartoon, but im a big fan of the Snowtrooper's in ESB as I have a set of armor for them and in the process of getting a Snow Commander set of armor including the ATAT driver set im doing now with other stuff, are you possibly going to cast these or is it just a one off as I would love one there super cool.

Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
It's been a while since I posted an update. The lid is now finished!
I'll be sending it to my buddy, Mojo-Fett for moulding and casting either today or Monday. So before I start an interest thread, I wanted to get some feedback on what people would like? The way I see it you can either have a simple raw cast lid and the resin greebles(mouth inserts and aerators), or the addition of precut vinyl cowl with the lid?
Obviously having the cowl supplied would effect the final price but I just want to see what people would prefer so I can look into the cost of the vinyal material.
Also, remember, we're in the UK so shipping for our US friends will be extra.
Any and all feedback concerning this would be much appreciated!! ;)
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Dang Skip!!! That is GORGEOUS!!!!!
2 questions,
1. How did you get the helmet so thick, is it bondo, or just layers of styrene???
and,
2. Is the pepakura template for sale???
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
Thanks alot!
The thickness is from the bondo. It makes a very solid helmet but a little heavy for comfort. The template isn't available yet but will be in time. ;)
-
Re: My Snow Clone Scratchbuild!
skip,
How big would your head have to be to fit into it?
only asking as i have a large head (7.3/8)
will the final helmet be as thick as the original.
i've said it before and i'll say it again great work:thumbsup.
Jason
