Imperial Guard Helmet
Hey guys,
Been a while since I posted anything here. So I wanted to come back with something to show.
I've been spending quite a bit of time over at the 405th and I've been surprised at how they are using papercraft software to create some really impressive Spartan armor. I designed a chest perm for them and then I modelled up some Fett gauntlets for a friend ;). This got me thinking Star Wars again and so I chose to try the Imperial Guard helmet.
Attachment 25301
Hopefully this will build into a decent likeness of it and using the 405th techniques, bondo will smooth it all out.
I'm still unfolding the model into the 2D patterns so I have no idea yet how this will turn out but I'm postive. :)
Hopefully, if it turns out well, I'll continue on to hopefully design armor based on Kir Kanos. See how this goes first.
Attachment 25300
I wondered if anyone here can help me with something though. Roughly, how tall is the Gauds helmet in 1:1?? I've never seen let alone owned one before so I have no idea. My guess is around 40-45cm?
Any feedback or comments are welcome as always. Thanks
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
From my understanding there are a few different versions that differ greatly in size, one being almost bobble headish. I used to have a Don post and I thought it was around 44cm mainly because it swooped down over the torso adding height to the helmet.
Maybe someone such as MLC could help as he makes these helmets.
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
from my understanding some of them are too small for most troopers. This looks like a long overdue project I will be keeping my eye on it. It would be awesome to have paper templates similar to WOF's For this project.
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
Thanks guys!
The shape on this is pretty good I think. Though obviously I've not tested it yet. I have a big head though so if this fits me and looks good then it should be fine.
I'll update tomorrow sometime, hopefully by then it'll be ready to testbuild.
44cm? Glad I was in the rough ballpark then. :)

Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
Unfolding all done. I hope to testbuild tonight, I just need some confirmation of the height of an actual bucket.
Attachment 25317
It'll take 23 pages of A4 to print then build.

Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
Wow, This looks like it'll be good! Can't wait to see more :)

Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
I have all the measurements I need now. Plus I'm tweaking the model after some faults were pointed out to me. It didn't look close enough to the real thing. The face was quite a way off for a start. Also there is a ridge that runs from the front/chin area up and around the back of it. So I'm afraid there are no build pics yet, but I do have a screen grab of the improved back of it.
Attachment 25405
Hopefully I'll have it ready for a testbuild in a day or two.

Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
Wow! Impressive. I've always wondered what the heck Pepakura...now I know.
Can't wait to see how this turns out!
David.

Those Fett gaunlets were made using Pepakura? Can you share them with us? They will be an alternative to the ones from WOF...wich are great!!
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
What Fett gauntlets? Have you seen them? I didn't even say which friend it was for.
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
Accept my apologies. I'm sorry for my request. I didn't know if those gaunlets were made using pepakura or not, or even that they were only for your friend. By the way, great work in the pepakura model for the Royal Guard helmet.
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
Awww! No Way! This is awesome! I've actually been looking for a pep model of this helmet for a couple of months now, I saw where people were doing Spartan helmets and armor like this and it got me thinking. Will it be possible to get copies of the pep file when you're finished? I've thought about trying to make one myself but the whole 3D imaging thing is a little beyond my capabilities with my dinosaur of a PC, and my lack of knowledge in dealing with that kind of stuff. I'm looking forward to see how this works out.

Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
Thanks guys, I was starting to think that Mandos didn't like the Empire enough to not post here. LOL!
The build is finished now, it's not too bad as it goes. I'm really pleased with it. It get a little tricky in places, but taking your time will see you through.
Here are some pics:

I've fibreglassed around 65% of the inside now too, I'll go back later and finish it off to get it all solid and ready for smoothing out with bondo.
I'll post pics of that too.
@ Odran Kor, It's cool, no need to apologise. I just wasn't sure what set of Gauntlets you thought were made from pepakura.
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
Wow... nice work bruv!!
As T_bone asked...'if' when finished could a guy get a copy of your templates? these are awesome? great work on the modelling and I look forward to this smoothed out with bondo. :thumbsup
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
Sure thing. :) You'll need a program called Pepakura Viewer to open this file though.
Get it here: http://www.tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura-en/
And here's the file. Please don't share it with people, just link them to this thread or to the 4shared link. Also, the file is not for sale and should never be. I don't want to see this file on ebay or other file hosts. It's free for all and I'd like it to stay that way. I also wouldn't want to see it somewhere with someone else taking credit for it. If I find any of this happening then I'll remove my work from the net and keep future works for myself.
Now that that's out of the way(sorry about that but it is necessary sometimes), I hope you enjoy the file and be sure to post pics! ;)

Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
Cheers bud, it looks awesome and thank you for sharing!
I had the viewer already installed... ;)
I will not share this as I appreciate the work that went into it, but will show others your link for ref... I look forward to 'trying' to make this? :lol
As a fellow UK Fett, did you use standard A4 paper (fit to page) etc.. or did you use A3. :thumbsup
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
A4, but cardstock. Not paper. It'll be too flimsy and won't hold it's shape well. Anything around 120 weight upwards would be fine.
YOU'RE WELCOME BUDDY! :)
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
Friggin sweet! I can hardly wait to get started. Thanks a lot for sharing. :cheers
BTW... What kind of glue do you use? I've used a few different glues in the past but I found that testors model glue worked best with what I had around the house. Is there something better I should get?
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
Wow, that looks amazing! Can't wait to see how it looks all smoothed out and painted. Great work! Have you done any Spartan armor yet? It looks like you've got the paper folding down!
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
Well my main hobby is papermodelling and papermodel design. So I've been doing it for a while now. For Spartan armor, are you referring to Halo Spartans? I'm in the middle of an EOD helmet at the moment.
If you click on the little link in my sig, I have a blog detailing the projects I'll be working on soon.
@ t-bone, For glue, I always use PVA glue. I'm in the UK so I'm not sure if it has a different name over where you are? It's a general glue, used in schools for arts and craft, but is also called wood glue as it's used in woodwork too. It's white when wet, but dries clear.
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
Great work, the helmet looks brilliant!
Thanks for posting the templates, I may well give it a try my self at some point.
Any plans to do any other helmets?
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
Great Work with the Royal Guard Helmet. I allready have one and yours seems really good. I think I'm going to use your pepakura one to make a Shadow Royal Guard (the one from The Force Unleashed) when I finish my custom mando.

Like Elmer's school glue then. I didn't even try that I didn't think it would hold up well. Thanks.

Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
The glue I use is good beause it gives you some time to position the glue tabs before setting. ;) The hold is strong enough too.
Thanks for the compliments guys, I appreciate it. As for ther helmets there are a few plans. I'll soon be starting a Leia Boushh helmet for a friend. I plan on trying to do the Anubis and Horus head armor from the Stargate movie, full Republic Commando armor and helmet. I have loads more ideas but only so much time so these will come slowly but I'll get there. There's also another Halo helmet I've aid I'd do for the 405th. That's the Hayabusa helmet.
Thanks again. :)

Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
I've got to do it yet. It's quite a tricky design to model and ensure it'll be strong and build friendly at the same time. Time will tell. ;)

I humbly suggest you put this as top priority on your list. *waves hand* Yes, yes...you will finish this now.
'Twas worth a try. :lol
Awesome work so far, bro! I envy people who can do all that folding and gluing.... I have no patience.
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
I will finish this armor now. LOL!
I'm waiting on a friend to draw up some blueprints of the RC armor and helmet. Then I'll start it.
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
I've been working on this now, when time allows, for the last few days. I have to say that so far it is the second most difficult pepakura design I have attempted, but I love it. I even went out and bought some quick set glue. I have a large portion of the top dome done now. I can't wait to see how it turns out.
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
Fantastic! The dome is the most difficult, mainly because of all the faces. Though it gets easier as you work down. ;)
Can't wait to see it.
I managed to get some more fibreglass on mine yesterday, I'm hoping to be able to get some bondo onto it today if the weather picks up.
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
Can't wait to see your results after the fg and bondo.
I really, really like this new glue. I got a "system" down thats working out really well and seems to be moving faster. I am using hemostats (3 sets total) to hold the parts after gluing a few at a time. By the time I get the glue on the fourth set of tabs I can remove the hemostats from the first set and replace them on the newly glued parts. I was using tweesers and clothespins which seemed like it was moving really slow.
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
I was using little craft pegs for mine. I had a similar system though with the PVS glue I was using.
It's raing here but hopefully I have enough resin left in the garage to get the last of the fibreglassing done today. I'll try to get some filler onto it too.
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
That program looks so cool! I may have to look into it, seeing how it can help make awesome props like that!
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
Thanks buddy, I'm still working on this as well as another Halo helmet. There just isn't much new to show on the RG lid. As soon as I make some decent progress I'll post it here. ;)
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
Wow!
I should really log-on more often! Skupilkinson! This is really cool of you to share the file after doing so much work! I was always interested in the Pepakura software but not so much in a Halo lid... WOW!
I hope you have taken pics of each stage as noobs like me will have LOTS of questions :) Print, Glue, Fiber Glass the inside - then heatgun glue the outside or our Euro equivalent to bondo???
Thanks again for sharing - its really cool of you to do so!
Going to try this to get me back in the groove - Pepakura + SW = LOVE
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
:) Thanks very much! I haven't had much chance to get more work on this one yet, the weather here has been wet and cold so it's not ideal bondo weather. I sprayed it with some grey paint(lazy job) just to get an idea as to how much bondo work it'll need.
Some areas need a bit of attention but overll, it's Ok. As soon as I get a chane to get in the garage and carry on with it I will.
Thanks again.

Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
Just wondering if you're still gonna offer this .pdo file!! The link no longer works :( I hope no one has been selling or taking credit for your awesome work...really wouldn't suprise me wit people though...
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
Skip did offer this... but due to one or two people making money from his work on Ebay he has decided to sell his work rather than give it away? best to PM Skip... :thumbsup
-
Re: Imperial Guard Helmet
Thanks for explaining it Mojo'. I always get uncomfortable having to answer that one since my work in the past has always been free to all.
It is true that most of my current and future work will be for sale only, however the Fett stuff I'm doing at the moment is free as soon as it's ready. I'll be posting links when the time comes.

I can send them in either A4 or Letter. ;)
