Total newbie to the armor thing and I'm putting together a RotJ Dengar. What are everyone's thoughts on making a few of the buttons lights? How would you go forward with this?

Hey dude you probably want to check out fettronics.com you will have to send him an email and he may be able to make a board for you.

Simple way is to buy LEDs at radioshack and a little bit of wire (heat shrink tubing to seal connections). Check the voltage on the LEDs. Most are 1-3v. If you wire em in parallel, 2 AA batteries should work for 4-8 LEDs.
