Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
I swear there's a Phase I clone pilot helmet in there somewhere!:?
I know I really enjoy build up pics. So, I thought I'd share a project I started tinkering with after I caught the clone pilot fever this past summer. I revisit it now and then in between working on member's orders or during drying times, but it's pretty much a "long-term" project. Who knows if it'll turn out alright, but at least I'll be able to call it my own.:wacko:lol
Thanks goes out to stormtrooperguy and skygunbro for their inspirations.
I'll be sure to continue to post pics of the progress when there is any.:thumbsup
Enjoy,
Cruzer

For now i can say: good luck with your new project!:cheers

Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
ooo watching with interest
is that expanding foam you have filled the lid with right at the start btw?
-
Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
Very cool.
let me know when you want me to critique it.

:lolYeah, I know it still is FAR away from looking like a clone pilot helmet!:?
Right now I'm just trying to capture the base overall shape, afterwhich I'll start fine tunning it.
After gluing all of the parts together with CA glue, I lined the interior with a few coats of expanding rigid foam from Smooth-On, then I used some of that expanding foam in a can for home construction because I ran out of the rigid foam. If I could do it over, I would have ordered more expanding rigid foam and used that because it's way better than that house stuff. Oh well.:doh
Here's a pic of how it looked after the expanding rigid foam, and with the home stuff. I actually left the two canisters in there because they took up space.::rolleyes

If you think you got the credential!:D:lol
Actually, that's what I want from everyone...so chime in whenever you have something.

Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
make sure to get rid of that huge snout.
and keep it sharp like this orignal EFX helmet with out 10 layers of paint.

Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
Yeah, ideal would be to use a Sci-Fire or efx helmet as a base, but I don't see that happening as I don't have $450 to drop on an efx helmet right now because I just spent some $ on Sci-fire armor. As for the snout, it is what it is and changing that area doesn't concern me because it's not that far off as far as protrusion. I'm not looking to get crazy accurate, I'm just looking to make a nice fan-sculpt/build to go with my scratch made chest box.:thumbsup

Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
this will be fun to watch. i'm thinking that i might want to make a pilot helmet at some point too!
-
Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
Yeah, this endeavor is meant to be a long-term fun project, and to have an Ep2 clone pilot helmet that is scaled more to my "vertically challenged" height.:lol I like what skygunbro once said to me when he said having different projects going on at once helps feed prop makers A.D.H.D.:lol Hopefully he'll chime in with his thoughts about the Clone Wars pilot helmet.;) The future for having more Ep2/Clone Wars pilots among the ranks looks bright!:thumbsup:thumbsup

Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
Yeah what ever man Cruzer. Your just as anal as I am. :lol
I love the Ep2 pilots and Ep3 clone pilots.
I'm thinking I would love do to a V-Wing pilot some time.
As soon as I hire some of those Elfs Cruzer has in his garage. :lol
They were never seen onscreen, but there's some nice looking pictures of them somewhere. ;)
-
Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
When I send you pics of me working on props in the garage in my boxers and shirt because I walked outside early in the morning to let out the cat but never made it back inside the house...then you'll have undeniable proof the elves don't exist!!!:lol
Dude, and you know you take it to an accuracy level I only dream of!;)
I'd love to see those V-Wing pilots.:thumbsup

:lol:lol:lol:lol
Yeah Hasbro screwed up in some of the box art on the toy version of the V-wing.
Everyone thinks is just the regular ARC-pilot

But it's actually this guy right here. This is the one I'll be doing. :D

Nice, but with your facial resemblance I'd do an opened face helmet if I had your movie star looks!;):love

:lolI actually liked the shaved head clone that had red patches of hair.
The jet packs in this scene looked curiously familiar!8)

Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
This looks like a great project. I look forward to seeing more progress.
How has the Hasbro helmet worked out so far for this?
I haven't paid enough attention to the Clone wars, what is the difference between the CW version and the AOTC version?

the angles are REALLY exaggerated in the clone wars... the mouth area juts out a lot further (like the hasbro helmet), the bottom lip is flared out more, the frown is cut out completely and is just visor, the fin is really thin and has no ridges / details.
same with the armor... lots of relatively subtle changes, most of which make it more comfortable - like having the knees be extensions of the shins, rather than separate knee pads.
some things are probably for rendering simplicity, but i think more of it is just stylizing - they took the time to render brush strokes in paint on the armor, they could have rendered a frown into the helmet model if they wanted to :)

Clone wars helmet is cartoon based of the AOTC helmet.
I dont think Cruzer is going that route.
C6 how is your pilot helmet going? is it completed yet? I would love to see some images or give some feedback to this thread.
Can you post some images of what you did? and how you did it.
thanks man

Finished? no, this is a work in progress.

I still have a great deal of work to do before it's finished. I hope to get to it and wear it to Wondercon, but this project (like everything else) is slow going.
I used the face and collar of my infantry helmet, and the dome was carved out of 4 lb urethane insulation foam.
Sorry for the hijack

Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
No hijack at all, post anything and everything you want as it's nice to have numerous artistic minds giving input here.
C6, I like your sculpt. I had heard the master was broken and the project halted, so it's great to hear otherwise.
Like already stated, the mandible and mouth areas are exagerated in their size on the hasbro helmet. The CW pilot version sports infantry ears. However, stormtrooperguy, I don't feel the mouth juts out a lot more but instead is just wider. The profile shot of the efx helmet makes the mouth look like is has some Jay Leno action going on as well.:D

Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
I start by drawing everything out 1:1 scale. I do most of the shapes in urethane foam.
I started out by painting two halves black and gluing them together.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3040/...bf08c8fc_m.jpg
This is the center line that goes through the whole piece. No matter how you carve this up, the center line stays in the center.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3253/...82b0e474_m.jpg
I transfered the shap of the dome to the foam and started carving away.

The foam shapes much easier than trying to sand Bondo. It is much the same principle, you sand it to the desired shape; make lots of dust.

I started off with the face and collar of the infantry helmet I made years ago, and they are virtually the same.

Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
Every time I see a big block of foam turn into something like that helmet, I have to pick my jaw up off the floor. :suprise
Cruzer, I love your clone pilot, and can't wait to see what you do with this helmet! You make a dang fine clone, sir. :cheers

Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
I have to agree, that is amazing!:suprise:thumbsup

Wow, nice to see all the masters giving input and inspiration, let alone education to us all. Theres a million ways to skin a cat, some just work better than others - LOL...
LC, thats going to turn out too kewl!
C6, thats a thing of beauty..I have been following your flickr too, its awesome, thanks for sharing that. What do you use to coat your foam with?

I couldn't agree more.
I love it when people show progress. Some big prop makers just show the end result. Never how they got there.
Way to go guys!!

Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
wow, clonesix... that center line thing is simple and perfect, and i'd never thought of it. must. get. foam.

Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
Where can I get one of those official Porterville work benches?:lol Looking nice. I want to hear more about your new purchase. Give me a jingle if you have a chance.:thumbsup
-
Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
'nother question on the foam... can you vac form right over that, or do you use that to make a negative mold and then pour a positive out of ultracal or something?
-
Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
Cruzer, I'm a bit confused, why fill the helmet with the expanding foam?
-
Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
Because the foam gives to the helmet more consistency, IMO.
-
Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
IMO? I'm sorry, I'm still new to the forum and I'm not familiar with that term. What's IMO?
Thanks for clarifying the foam question!

Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot

Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
yeah, if you fill it with expanding foam it helps keep everything rigid. avoiding flex will prevent bondo cracking.

Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
I did a little reconstructive surgery on my EP2 Hasbro conversion, I think whilst the chin does stick out quite a bit it is the width that really makes it look a bit pointy, basically I cut out the chin section as it was basically one piece and stuck it back in from the inside thus setting the chin a little further back in the face, then built up the area around with bondo and blended it in, Great work so far Cruzer and six what type of foam is that, I need to get me some of that :thumbsup
oh and here is mine so far :thumbsup
-
Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
I love your clone helmet WIP stormtrooperguy :D, and Cruzer, progress? :)
-
Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
Where would we be without Bondo? haha
-
Re: Hasbro conversion to Phase I clone pilot
Bad economy = layoffs = more time to mod = invest in Bondo stock!
