Darktrooper Progress Thread 8MAR2011: Getting back to it

The idea was to finish it in clay then do the smoot-on process to build molds. I hope this helps in your wip.

You did a pretty good job so far bro, keep at it, and you'll get it done!

Sorry I havent responded...Just went through a horrible break up with my ex...wont get into that..

Its all about money at this point..I just got commissioned to put together a FL garrison member's BKBT jango helmet, so I'll use that money for what I need for the helmet and for materials for helping getting the helmet done.

Hopefully should be able to purchase the clone armor pieces soon too, I know that will really put me ahead of where Im at now.

Just need time to myself for now. Thanks

Sorry guys, its not over, I just need to put it on hold. I was just laid off yesterday, and that was honestly the last thing I needed. These have been the two hardest months of my life to be completly honest so far.

Despite not really having much funds to get what I'd really like to, to help move this along, I decided to try and do some prep work on the helmet, since it's just been sitting there with a giant bump on its dome.

I couldnt sand it off, it was just too soft with the FG and the foam, so I litterally cut it off with a knife, and it's now my Bondo Baby. Covered the top of the dome, and going to work from there. I did sand areas that *should* be round realistically, but not on the game model.

That piece of yellow material on the bottom left corner, next to the file, is the bump/slice I cut off

Man good luck with this build. It looks so difficult and your doing a really good job I can't wait to see it finished.

Hmm...just sanded down the dome..naturally, the bondo is not level, especially after sanding. It helped in getting the right "shape" but Im going to have to rely on the clay to smooth and level it out completly

*sigh* more waiting....

Well, with a little mix of insomnia and compulsive actions, I started clay work on the helmet. This is a brand thats meant for sculpting and also works with silicone molding, so I figure this should work out in the long run. This is really my first time using clay (except as a toddler now lol) so Im really learning as I go. I seem to get the general shape, but my biggest issue, is making it all really smooth, the way I need it. Also, certain spots, the clay will cling onto the tools and no matter how careful I am at tryin to smooth those areas, it will just come right off, leaving a "hole" in the clay.

Thats it really. I only had enough for the dome as of right now, even then, as you can see in the 2nd pic, that the left side is lower then the right. Thats caused by that "sinkhole" that was created by the expanding foam. I need to get more clay in order to fill it in a bit more.

I've used acetone and a brush to smooth modeling clay before. Don't know if that would work with your clay but I might be worth giving a shot.

Rubbing alchohol works fine, just pour a little either on the clay part or your hands and rub it smooth. It evaporates after it dries so you can easily mold it.
