Darktrooper Progress Thread 8MAR2011: Getting back to it

Oh boy...

Well, I just discoverd something very upsetting. The foam decided to expand a little more then it did before. Its not terrible, but its annoying. Basically, it just put a deformed bump on the top of the dome, which you'll see. Fortunatly, when it comes to adding the clay, I will be able to just sand it back to where it needs to be. But, none the less annoying...

Well, since I cant really do much with the helmet right now, I guess I'll continue what I started with the vac-form bucks. Im going to work on the shoulder bell and then I really want to fix up the bottom half of the forearm, because its too flat on the bottom, and I would really like to make the proper curve to conform to the arm.

So thats what Im going to do.

alrighty then. I got some done, but not as much as I wanted (because I have to wait)

For both the shoulder bell and bottom forearm piece, I had to "raise" it, by actually cutting some MDF scraps and gluing it to the top portion. The shoulder bell was just not tall enough to finish the peak of the curve, or it would have had an area on the top that was completly flat.

Same thing for the forearm piece. I had began sanding the forearm piece, and got most of it, but I realized that I didnt let the wood glue cure all the way, so Im going to wait till next time, same for the shoulder bell.

Now, for the FX-back piece. I cut off the greeblies that extend out (neatly though, so that I can keep and use them for whatever!) I then measured the inside of the box, which was 9"x 6 1/2", and cut a plywood rectangle and set it inside the box, and ran wood glue around the edges between the plastic and wood.

I know it sounds weird that im using the wood glue to hold this support plate in place, but I can say that it will hold. If you remember, I had actually glued that PVC pipe to that back piece helmet buck, and its still attached. I would say that buck is about 8-10lbs, roughly, and it was attached to a 3" diameter PVC, about 13" tall. I am able to hold that PVC pipe parallel to the ground with the buck on the other end, and it holds itself

Hey man keep up the good work, I just wanted to give you some extra encouragement. I really look forward to seeing more progress. What you are doing is going to be AMAZING!
As this is technically EU since its from a game, will the 501st approve it (when it's finished)?

You know, Ive asked tom spanos when he was still the head GML, and he said he even didnt know. As for the rules for accepting the costume, it has to have appeared in two seperate sources. The thing is that this appears in the video game Battlefront, but I think you can use only the game source once. I know its also in I think a comic book and a novel.

But the original darktrooper is from Dark Forces, and the likenesses are off, but they both have alot of similarities.

You know what I saw the other day at I think a walmart? It was a pack of figures based off of the battlefront game! However, it was the droid combo pack. I am certainly hoping that they come out with the imperial pack too, because that will really, really, REALLY help me get it accepted!

Ah, I see what you are saying. Which Dark Forces was it in?

And if it can be sourced from the game AND a comic (which one, or do you not know offhand?) then it could be accepted??

The very first Dark Forces with General Rom Mohc and the ark hammer

As for the comic/book, I dont know which one it was in. The biggist thing is the likenesses of the DT, because between all the sources, they all have differences, and I dont know which they would accept.

Alright..well, I just made a desicion about how im going to complete this costume...I am no longer going to construct the entire suit on my own, but Im going to start gathering pieces to "frankenstien" it together...

I know others have wanted this in "kit" form, but I simply cannot stress over trying to build every last bit of it.

Now, I will of course build the custom pieces that I need, but everything else thats clone, I will try to get from makers.

I want to get this finished.

Oh. I hardly recall the first Dark Forces, it was so long ago.
Just searching on Wookieepedia.com I came up with this for the Phase II Dark Trooper:
Image:Darktrooper.jpg

I'm just throwing out a wild guess here, but what was seen in Battlefront would have been only the Phase I, right? Doesn't make sense, I'm getting confused with the timeframe they all took place in. I don't know, I'm confused now. Wouldn't even help you at all, would it?

Lemme throw forth the corectitude!

The phase 1 in dark forces: skinny skeleton with shield and sword, similar to the Mquarie concept stormtrooper

Phase 2 in dark forces, a little beefier, and looked more like a stormtrooper on steroids.

Phase 3, big *** droid/exo-power suit, seen once in the game, being worn by Rom Mohc.

For the battlefront DT, its actually a cross between a phase 2 and 3, clone and stormtrooper.

The similiarties are:

Helmet face is just like phase 2,
helmet swoop is also on phase 3
Jet Pack is very similar in shape as phase 3
Backplate without Jet Pack is TK
Ab plate is clone,
chest is custom, shoulders, forearms and biceps, shins, all custom
Belt is a clone, but with only the 2 front boxes and then thermal detonator canister on the back.
Cod/butt is clone, thighs are clone
Handplats are a custom/ROTJ TK handplates
Blaster, is an E-11 "arc caster," and a scout pistol side arm

Oh and thats a pic of the phase 3

Haha, yeah you're right, I need glasses. But uhh, yeah! Keep up the good work!

I want laser eye surgery.....thanks though....

Well, I will be getting some clone armor parts from OSCS, just the thighs, cod/butt, abb and kidney pieces. However, Im going to have to wait a bit before I can actually pay for that. I may have to wait till after dragon con. I dunno, Im going to order some sculpting clay right now. I think I will only need about 4 lbs, just because Im not going to need that much.

Ive been thinking all night about this project and Im starting to get really anxious about finishing it. Im going to set a deadline for finishing this suit by next dragon con, or sooner, I would really like to finish sooner. Since I am now going to be getting the clone pieces pre-made, I will just need to focus on the rest of the pieces and then cast them.
All I have left to construct myself is:

-Finish the shoulder bell
-finish the bottom half of the forearm, and put holes into the top side boxes of the forearm
-create the chest
-create the shins
-Make new handplates

So, just need to finish that list, and cast them and should be good to go

Alright, well I just spent a good 2 1/2 hours working on both the fore arm buck and the shoulder.

Im scrapping the shoulder buck, its just too inaccurate and beyond the point of no return for it's salvage. Im taking a different route with it in time.

The bottom forearm picece now looks as it should, with the proper curve, where it was once flat and looked wrong. All I need to do to finish that is just apply some bondo around the edges of where I had added the extra MDF scrap, so that it is completly smooth with the rest of it.

Thats all for today

Hmm..Im really starting to hate this expanding foam...

Its really screwing with the dome right now. Other then the bump it created, on the left side of it now, it has literally sunken in on itself..as if the foam is pulling it down. Its still fixable..I would just really need to use a good amount of bondo to get it back in shape.

I personally would like to see the Battlefront DT come to the merchandise world? Unlike the Phase III; it looks like it holds true to stormtrooper look. Maybe you could start a list of names or find out how to submit something to Lucas for a Fans Choice 2008 action figure of BF DT or maybe even a Evolution serious of all four DTs. Phase I, II, II 1/2 (your build of BF DT) then III (the fig that is out there). Let me know, I would sign up for it??

You know that evolutions idea sounds pretty cool. I wish I knew who to contact about this type of thing. Im still hoping that they come out with an imperial battlefront 2 figure pack!

A 2-pack would be great, just like the comics. Is a comic considered a source? Any how; I took a stab at a RC bucket sculpt. Then I got one from Skygunbro instead. But here are some progress pictures before I scrapped it. The process wasn't really scuplting more like the Boba Fett cardboard deal then I rolled out clay and laid it on top of the cardboard. I am not a sculpter by any means. Check it out,
