Darktrooper Progress Thread 8MAR2011: Getting back to it

Alright, well I just fiberglassed (mostly just resin) the helmet. I added resin and actual matt to the dome, but pretty much just resined the rest of the helmet. This is because, well, I didnt think I needed to add the cloth all the way around, and plus, the paper is sturdy enough as it is to hold its shape, so that when the resin cures, it will remain as such.

I added matt to the dome just because thats like the "focal point" of the whole thing. If the dome's shape should alter in any way or be crushed, the helmet will not look right or will be redered usless for the project. So thats currently curing right now.

So the next issue Ive been thinking about is the front portion, thats below the frown, where the areators and the chin design are located. The problem is that, on this helmet, it flows with the whole helmet, and does not recess into it. This is a problem, because I need to "indent" the whole section so that I can, using the clay, create the dentations for the areators and the lip that goes over it.

I didnt resin that portion, because Im thinking of cuttin it out after I fill it with expanding foam and just sculpt it from there. Im not sure yet..

Well, just keeps getting better! I got the FX TK backpiece tonight, and the JJP seems to fit perfectly! Gotta wait to work on that.

I might be slow on progress coming up, becuase its looking more and more likely that I'll be going to dragon con! Gotta get my RFT costume finished. So yea, thats it for now!

I am so jealous I am going to try and get to some con this year and see what they are like I just don't have the time/money to get to D-con sadly. :(

I think I am going to also go with your idea of cutting it out after putting the foam in and sculpting in the details.

You know you could amp up the project to high gear and wear it instead. ;) (Just playing you got to make sure its all perfect for the grand appearance.)

Thanks for the input z-man, I may most likely do that.

Im going to need to fiberglass it some more, the resined only parts havent cured for some reason, but the clothed parts have. I dont know, but I will have to to do that.

However, I just confirmed a hotel reservation, so I now have a room for d-con. I just need to get a ticket, and just save money to pay for the hotel. What does this mean? Well, I may have to cut back and not be able to mold the helmet until AFTER august. But im not 100% on that yet, depending on how finances are, I will have to see where Im at up until d-con. But, I would still need to get clay, and the molding materials.

Plus, I need to finish the RFT for d-con as well. We'll see..

Thanks Jedi!

I just payed for my ticket to D-con! Im going for sure now! Im really excited about this now, especially since Im putting together a Rebel Fleet Trooper w/ rocket launcher! lol, im getting excited. Im also going to bring my Death Star Engineer costume w/ fusion cutter. Im thinking of adding a new belt and making a holster thing for the cutter prop as well.

Resin still hasnt cured  but its far from over!

Thanks mandalore, i really appreciate your compliments and support, I truly do.

I apologize for not responding sooner, just went through some personal stuff in the past 48 hours, but it will shortly go away. I dont want to get mushy or cheesy, nor explain what has happened. I know this is random, but from the past 2 days, I will end this post by saying, that you much charrish who you have at your side, no matter how annoyed of star wars they are, but dont take for granted what you have. Just make sure that you love them, because it is so easy to lose them, just before you realize how much you really appreciate, love and need them.

Just letting you guys know, that Im still workign on this helmet. I started fiberglassing it again today. Im going to be putting the matt all over inside of it. I have to do it in sections to that I wont warp parts of it due to weight before it cures. So now, I have the dome done and I added more to the inner area just before the swoop. Gotta let it cure now. I think last time, I just added too much resin then it could soak.

Well, its all fiberglassed now. Its kinda cool becuase even though its just a thin layer of FG, it's already starting to 'fee' like a real prop helmet. Im going down south this weekend, but besides that, I just need to fill it with the foam, and then see about getting the clay and molding silicone/materials. But after the foam, this is probably the most Im going to be able to (financially) get done, until after dragon con

Blarg..I just tried out the expanding foam...from what I can see, its not, really..expanding much. Maybe give it more time.

Been working on this rebel blaster mod, so thats whats been going on

It takes a bit for that stuff to expand sometimes. Just be patient and dont use too much at once.

Thanks T-bone, just not as much as I thought it would. Oh well.

Im starting to consider just filling just the face and dome portions. The inner portion of the swoop is pretty sturdy, plus, it wont need to support alot of weight. So Im just going to go with that then.

Sooooo....I just used the entire can of the expanding foam....it only filled the inside part of the dome....I think I will just leave it at that, and us it a point for sticking an armature through. We'll see..

Hmmmm... that's odd. I thought it would fill more. You really must have room for an entertainment center in there. I think it only took like 13 cans to fill my torso mold.

You have no idea bro. The dome is just a tad larger then the FX's. After it hardened, it "poofed" out a bit, but not so much. It filled the dome, up to just below (if your holding the helmet upside down, looking into it) the frown.

Its massive inside, and I dont think anyone will ever have a size issue with it.

Now, I didnt bring this up before, but one thing Im worried about AFTER its finished, is the placement and spacing of the eyes. I fear that they are actually too wide apart. I dunno, gotta wait and see..
