    Chewbacca

Have started my Wookiee project, after months of research and deciding whether to do Chewie or Tarfful, finally if gets underway. Chewie it is then!!!

Have just completed the feet that give me 12" of lift. The hair is kanekalon latch hooked to a mesh.

Beginning of the underskull build, needs some tweaking before I mould it.

Have a local tailor making mesh trousers and top for latch hooking.

    Few progress pics

They are really comfortable to walk in and very stable.

I have ordered an original trilogy bowcaster from www.stentorindustries.com
Also asked him to price an ROTS version too.

On the hunt for a bandolier, I don't think it's something that I could make myself. I'm useless at sewing.

These are the trousers after approx 3 to 4 hours of latch hooking, it's hooked about 5 inches from the leg ends.
That is just one pack of kanekalon.
Using kanekalon numbers strawberry blonde #27 and brown #6, will start to introduce some blonde #22 and grey #44 as I progress.
I estimate that it will take approx 25 to 30 hours to complete the trousers.

My motivational ref image thrown in there for good measure, it's what will keep me going!

There seems to be very few people willing to offer up latch hooked wookiee suits, I hope to change that provided people are impressed by my work.
Hope to have this project finished within the next two months so I will be in a better position to price it all up then.

I'm a addicted to latch hooking, I know it's weird!!

Color me VERY interested in this then. And I don't think it's strange being addicted to something like that. There are things far stranger in this world Besides, because you are addicted to it, there are many that can benefit that happen to be challenged in this particular category - myself included

    Great work so far mate

    Re: Chewbacca

That's looking really great ! In all of the Chewie suits I've seen, the two big areas where the costume loses it's authenticity are the face/hair and poofy body hair. Most of the faces I've seen look like a generic ape-man or sasquatch, they don't ever seem to capture Chewie ( plus, you need bright blue eyes ! ). The other, like I said, is that the body hair always seems freshly brushed and not the close hanging almost "greasy" look from the films. The leg hair you have put on looks really good, It's got the color ans length, but not all frizzed out, it holds tight to the leg.

Oh yeah, a lot of Chewies seem to have rock star hair a la Sammy Hagar. I like the slicked back ANH hair personally !

    Awesome work Dougie !

    Hey I just noticed, 300th post !

Cheers Timmer, Chewie is a difficult one to pull off convincingly.

I have spent the last month sculpting the face, constantly going back and forth making adjustments, really itching to get working on the hair.
I'm going to try my utmost to do a good job or die trying!!

He did get to fly during the Death Star escape. Oh yeah, and the escape from Mos Eisly Spaceport, "Chewie, get us outta here !! " ( Han was just boarding, so the big guy must have been piloting ) Seems like Chewie was actually the go-to guy for getting everyone out of trouble : )

    Some more progress.

Had the mesh shirt stitched by a tailor and got him to add a few buttons to help it slip on easier.

Got some latch hooking done, approx 4 hours work.
Hope to have the latch hooking complete in 2 weeks.
Have acquired a bandolier from Mel Mattson, going to replace the boxes with ROTS ones.

A closeup of the latch hooking process!

Still messing about with the sculpt, I think I'm nearly there with proportions just need to smooth it out and refine the lips a bit more, can't wait to mould and cast it. Mouth is not downturned as much now
Got some platsil gel 10 for the outer mask, one of the best silicones available.

If only Ron Pearlman had let me to a lifecast of his face it would have saved me some sculpting!

Actually a Hellboy costume is another one that I would love to try!

Any chance that we will be seeing this costume at Invasion III (assuming there is an InvasionIII)?

very nice job so far. it looks like you have the hair installation down! most wookiees i see look like they are having a bad hair day, but yours looks right from the get go.
can't wait to see the head. keep up the great work.

The end of latch hooking the suit is nigh!!!! Need to add a little more brown mix to cover up some of the grey around the waist area, reckon another 4 to 5 hours should do it.

The arms have taken a lot longer because I am latching every second loop for the most part or even every loop in some areas. The hair will need some trimming and thinning out because of this.

    Re: Chewbacca

They latch hooking is comnplete, woo hoo, just minor tweaks needed, will post pics tomorrow.

Meanwhile I have being making progress on the skull!

Sculpt all greased up ready for moulding!

    Jesmonite mould, approx 3 layers!

    Negative, looking positive!

The next step was to remove a layer approx 5mm from the sculpt and carve out the underskull.
Rough and ready but will be smoothed out before moulding.

I then cast a temp gelatin skin to act as a guide for building up support.

Just waiting on RTV silicone before I mould the skull.

LOOKS GREAT!! But instead of taking off 5mm. of clay for the underskull cant you just add 5mm. of clay to the negative mold, smooth it out, and then pour plaster into it?

Yes you can, that's the way Daniel Tirinnanzi does it for his amazing animatronic gorilla head that was used in the Cadburys commercial.

But I decided to do it this way, didn't take too long and will be as effective!

Here's the finished suit! Still needs a little tweaking (adding hair here and there) but very happy overall!

Will top out at approx 7'5", I'm 5'11", I'm giddy like a little kid at Christmas!!

    Dougie,

I haven't been back here in a while, so I popped in for your updates. I'm glad I did.

You are doing an absolutely amazing job on this. You could hold your own with those
that made the real suits my Irish brother.

I'm so thrilled to see this in fact, that I'd offer you just about everything I had for that
    thing !!

    Phenomenal talent and execution

Really hope to have it ready for Easter weekend! But as usual real life gets in the way!

I have the face, teeth and upper underskull moulds complete so just need to mould the mandible and start casting!!
