    Bib Fortuna complete

After completing Fett, I wanted to do a character that was a little different from the normal ones you would see trooping, haven't seen any photos of any Bibs anywhere (believe me, I have looked but please feel free to correct me).

Seems that the costume won't be too difficult to replicate, the headpiece will be the most difficult part.

Here is a pic of a bust that I have made. Still a little rough and will need smoothing out in places, plan on casting moulds from it (various pieces) and constructing latex parts.

The lekku are going to be cast separately.

    Any tips, critiques welcome.

Would anyone know what's best to use as a release agent (alginate mould, latex cast)?

If I remember correctly, a plaster mold can be used for casting latex. Pour in latex, swish it around, and pour out the excess and repeat after it dries. DO NOT make an alginate mold. They have a shelf life of only a few hours! Look around on Smooth-On.com as I'm sure they have a more modern material you could use that should be easier to cast and last longer. Nice sculpt - BTW!

Thanks for the advice, have looked at using maybe rubber urethane for the overall cast.

If you are just going to cast the mask from slush latex, then you should just make a plaster mold.

Have taken on board the advice given and will be making plaster moulds.

Have constructing the basic shape of the lekku, I only plan on making one to cast from.
There isn't really any differences between the two except for the scar tissue on the front lekku.

Hi David, are you planning on attaching the lekku to the costume on the shoulders, looked like they were done this way in the movie.

I'll attach them to the back of his head, if you notice on the bust I have raised areas behind the ears.

Sorry bud, I mean the other 'thin' end. I watch the Jabba part of ROTJ today and noticed that they were attached to his shoulders on the outer coat garment, this is most obvious when he leans forward to inform Jabba that Luke has arrived.

Sorry Rob, yes I'll probably just use a small piece of velcro underneath or just a safety pin.

The lekku look much longer in the Phantom Menace (wrapped around each other) but I want to achieve the ROTJ look.

    Re: Bib Fortuna costume progress

Sculpted the basic shape of the lekku.
Basically a stocking filled with foam, wrapped in plaster bandages and coated with oil clay.
Will need to be refined slightly when it dries completely. From research, have found that the lekku are quite rough around the edges anyway.
I'll add scar tissue to the front lekku at later stage. The idea is to make a plaster mould and slush with latex, foam will be added to give it structure and shape.
The wider end of the cast will be open so that I can form thinner edges to blend to the headpiece.

I've sourced all suppliers and materials for this costume.

Got various quotes from people on this board for particular parts (you know who you are and thank you for your time and patience).

I've decided to get the leather and soft parts made by fellow KOTE members (Clothears - Jude and Alison) in the UK that have produced some amazing work to date and will hopefully benefit from seeing the finished version in the flesh at a future troop.

I've always liked Bib Fortuna, but my lack of knowledge on latex and sculpting has prevented me from attempting this costume. Good luck and can't wait to see more progress!

    Re: Bib Fortuna costume progress

Getting back to the nitty gritty.

Thought I might try a baldcap method first, coated the bust in layers of latex (10 so far) will put at least 40 layers (more in other places). If it doesn't work I will go down the route of moulding and casting.

    Progress so far:

The feint red line is where it will stop, tissue thin blending edges needed for a seamless line.
My own lower face will be exposed, the latex cast will be applied over a normal baldcap with foaming in between to give the structure it's shape.

So far so good, most difficult part will be taking it off without ripping it, hence the need for 40/50 layers. I have applied rubber mask grease every fifth layer to give it colour and help determine the thickness. The last couple of latex layers will be thinned out with acetone to smooth off the cast.

If it is successful, I will make the neck, ears and lekku using the same method.

P.S. Took ears off, would be too difficult to remove otherwise.

Took it off the block and it worked a treat, didn't rip

Just waiting to get some baldcaps to continue on.

Meanwhile, lekku 1 is under construction, half way there.

    Re: Bib Fortuna costume progress

Made some great progress over the last week.

The headpiece is 70% finished, needs to be attached to a baldcap and some detail added, holding it's shape really well already.

Next piece to be done was the neck (excluding the dangly bits), very thin allowing good movement.
Tissue thin edges for seamless blending. I will make the danglies out of hard clay and fill with beanbag beads to give them some weight. Looking at ref pics, Michael Carter had a cord around his neck attached to each one.

The first lekku or "lek", this is about as thick as your standard baldcap, packed out with filling.
It actually turned out a lot smoother than I thought, will need to add scar tissue to the front one.

So 1 more lek and 2 danglies and that wil be all the prosthetics done, will coat them in a combo of acrylic and prosaide to give a uniform base colour before I start painting with rubber mask grease.

Most of the latex parts made at this stage, waiting on a latex baldcap.

Will begin to piece everything together then on to painting.

Finished making the baldcap and have attached the various parts.

The front lekku needs some readjusting so that it wraps around without puckering, need to refine some of the head structure as well. The lighting doesn't really do it justice but there is a lot of definition in the skull shape.
Very happy with it so far

This is where I'm at for now, still needs some tweaking and will be ready to paint soon. Of course I forgot to attach the neck piece for this shoot!

It's actually very comfortable to wear and weighs very little.

The costume is under construction now too. Can't wait to get this done!!

The finishing line is nearly in sight (well, for the mask that is)!!
Have applied the base colour with pax paint and put in some subtle shading with rubber mask grease. I applied a layer of KY jelly to give it a glossy sweat sheen.

Still haven't found the right contact lenses, most of the ones available are too red, the search continues.

Hoping to apply this baby sometime in the next week.

Just researched on the net mainly, bought "The Prop Builders handbook" too, very useful.

This project is so fantastically disgusting. I LOVE IT! Even down to the nasty sacks hanging under the chin. WELL DONE!

Still waiting on robes and need to finish the hands myself, a little sidetracked by work.

Wanted it to be ready for Invasion Belfast in October so have plenty of time.

Was actually being modeled by Jude from Clothears costumes but it does fit me very well too.

The end is nearly in sight, have finished the gloves.

Will be getting these contacts, they are the closest match that I could find without having to get expensive custom made ones.

Still need to source a pair of boots, most close matches are womens and not available in size 10. Something like this in grey, brown or black would do.

Re: Bib Fortuna costume - Completed

Here we go then!! Please bear in mind that I had to put it on myself and it is not exactly in the correct position.
My wife took the shots and she failed to notice that the robe was not closed over properly and that the front lekku was riding up a tad.

    Be gentle!!!
